A couple of sources for offline clients

I'm always trying to think of ways that friends of mine can help me out with my business and vice versa so I thought I'd share a couple of sources that are currently working for me.

I'm sure that most of you have heard of this source before but one of my friends is a barber and has been bringing in a number of clients for me as of late. As you know, business owners love talking about their business and they already have trust built with their barber.

Instead of having my friend hand him a business card which will likely be tossed away immediately, I tell him to get the client's phone number so that I can call them. My closing rate of these prospects is through the roof because my friend, who the client trusts, has already vouched for me.

Another friend of mine has been teaching food safety classes in the area as one of his many businesses. I was asking him about it and he said that it is mostly restaurant owners who are required to take the class once a year. They are normally very small classes (3-10 people) so my buddy has an easy time getting to know the clients and to build trust with them. Once he has the trust and they are just talking business, he can easily tell them about the mobile websites that I build or SMS marketing or SEO, the list is endless.

Now because they are friends of mine we are basically just on an honor system where I tell them how much I'm making off the client and give them a percentage. If you don't know any barbers or food safety teachers personally, you can still reach out and figure out ways to make it work for both of you. Remember to make them an enticing offer that will make them WANT to get you more business and not just ask them for a favor. Referrals can be your best friend if you use them correctly and you take care of those who are taking care of you.

Referrals and networking are two of the most important elements to a successful business. You can be successful without them, but it's a lot harder and it takes a lot longer.

Yea for sure. It is super effective but highly undervalued in my opinion. It doesn't all have to be about people that you know, try to take advantage of people that friends and family know as well.

What you are saying is right,I have always heard that your network is your networth and am certain it is, however I just wonder how can someone who is more of an introvert network successfully, would like to hear your views. Thanks in advance.

There are plenty of people who would consider themselves shy that are successful through networking. Like someone mentioned above, your local chamber of commerce is a good place to start.

Before I started cold calling I would say that I was a little bit timid. I was stuttering a lot and the whole 9. You'd be surprised at how quickly that goes away after a few calls and it's the same thing with networking in real life. Put your fears or objections behind you and just go forward without over thinking it.

Something that I haven't quite gotten around to trying just yet but sounds like you might be able to benefit from is LinkedIn. I've heard good things about it and I'm sure there are threads around or WSO's about how to use it effectively. However like I said I can't speak from experience on that one.

  • I even considered finding a politician that shared some of the same ideals as men, in terms of small businesses need a boost in confidence, everybody needs more money, economy needs stimulating, etc, etc, and run some sort of campaign, using their name and face to get me in the door

In exchange for a nice donation to his/her campaign of course

    All the best,
    Sam

The best way to get a lot of business fast is in borrowing other's circle of influence, client bases and friends and family.

    Great thread so far!

Networking and referral marketing are very key to growing ones business.

I have also used Hair Stylist, A friend who delivers products to other businesses.

My most effective by far is my existing clients. I have learned that if i over deliver, give them great value, they will tell others about my service.

Solve a problem offer excellent service. My last 5 clients have come from through referrals.

Networking is HUGE! A lot of people are focused on "potential clients" and how to get them, searching, mailing, e-mailing etc.

What we do not realize is how many people we know that are in these sort of positions.

On Facebook the other day, I had just read out to an old high school friend, she and I were never "best of friends", but always were friends. Literally, I have not talked with her in 9 years since we graduated, but caught up with her through facebook.

So we were on a face book chat with the usual "hows life?" "what are you doing these days" , and when she asked me, I explained I had started a marketing company, where I help businesses with things like SEO, SMS , etc etc.

She was like really? I manage all of *large city here* small business phone lines, I basically speak to small business owners for a living, every day, all day, and takes care of their phone line stuff (for At and T) -

I got excited, but bottled it and said, "Kim that is great, well it was good talking to you , and if any of your clients needs help, go ahead and send them my way, I'll make sure you get a nice chunk of change LOL! (I am talking hundreds per client to you)"

    She didn't respond.

Instead, She called my cell phone (listed on FB) within 30 seconds and we came to a very fair agreement as I explained to her the different things I offer businesses, my track record, had her google some of my clients for an example.

Just opening up and talking to people and networking goes a long way. I suppose you could remove the word "life" from Gump's famous line, and replace it with "networking"

Networking is a massively smart way. I personally use the local Chamber, and surprisingly, most cities have young professional groups, that sole purpose is to network with other professionals. This is where I get most of my referrals. Find a local one and join. You will be amazed.
