Calling Restaurants After Hours?

Hey Guys,

Has anybody had luck with calling
Restaurants after hours and leaving
a message?

I tried calling 10 Restaurants this morning
and leaving an enticing message for them
to call me back

Out of the 10 Not even ONE had an answering
machine and it just kept ringing and ringing

just curious ...

    Well Jack -

If they don't have answering machines, it doesn't seem like this method would work..

I would hope that calling late, you may catch the business owner "finishing up " some things..

You would think that they would have answering machines?

They may have got rid of them just for "people like you" :-D

What about leaving a letter/note slid under the door? They would see it when they first walked in , in the morning.. hmm

They may have dumped their answering
machines because of "people like me"

I have no problem just calling but figured
I would try this to see what happened

      you live you learn :0

Have you ever known anyone who ran a restaurant? I think it is one of if not the toughest business out there.

They are totally wiped out after close. I would NOT call them at that time.

I would call on them in person mid day during their slow time 2-4pm for most restaurants and not to pitch them, just to introduce yourself and set a time when they would be willing to talk to you.

You might even sit down and have something and then ask to talk to the owner or manager.

They might want to talk to right then, but leave it up to them to suggest that or make an appointment for later.

haha Jack, at least you can pick up on the sarcasm whereas some just don't.

I bonked up my first call back from a client Friday evening, so the "cold calling" part is even more intimidating for me! But I did learn, and still trying to figure out ways to get call backs, although the method I used did work and 1 out of 3 called me back.

I wonder what your "enticing script" is...

It's a pretty killer script. I don't want it out in cyberspace
but if you want give me a call Ryan and I'll tell you what i'm
      doing

I'm in Florida (EST) and my number is:

407 - Five Four Five - Eight Zero Two Zero

the same goes for anybody else that is interested

Some of the things I do I don't want to put out on the
Internet but have no problem sharing it with people one
      on one

"Hi, my name is ___. I've got a quick question for ___, and I'm hoping (he, she, you) can help me. It's 00:00 now, and I'll be in my office until 00:00--I'm (on the west coast, east coast, central, central Asia, whatever time zone). My number is ###."

This counter-intuitive, non-specific script will get you a lot of callbacks. It works on curiosity. Be ready to quickly answer "What's this about?" but not in a way that slams them with "I'm Trying To Sell You Something."

I never calling to restaurants. ( Just if i know direct manager contact, i'm calling to him immediately ).

I always use direct mail for restaurants or powerful video of my services. It really works.

I've targeted coffee shops for my offline marketing products... I've gotten some responses, but usually its a matter of weather i can actually talk to the manager/owner.
My "script" is pretty rough, and i find myself stumbling over my words sometimes. I'm not really a shy person, its just harder when i know i'm trying to pitch something. I could definitely tell my.... conversation power was increasing with every call. I've called about 60 coffee shops in the last 3 days, asking them to just take a look at my web-site. So far, about 12 of them have looked at it.

I pretty much give them a basic outline of what my intentions are, tell them how much my service would benefit their business, and ask them to check out my web(sales)page.

    So far... no purchases.

I'm sure it'll get better as i do it more, but i suppose this would work for any type of business you call. I probably left about 20 messages (about 5 of which were "after hours") and have not got 1 single call back. My message is something like this: My name is josh, and i would like to help you with getting more customers for your business. If you want my assistance, please call me back, or check out my website."

    Thoughts?

Very glad. I would also go in to the restaurants for a snack or cup of coffee every so often with no business in mind.

I've always done more business with marketers and advertisers that I get to know.

There are literally thousands of ways for a business owner to spend their marketing/advertising budget and many times, it was the personal relationship that made all the difference.

I used to own a couple of restaurants and I was always getting calls like that so I pretty much instructed everyone to take a message no matter who it was.

However the guys that walked in the back door got my attention because usually if you walk in the backdoor I knew that you knew your way around the industry and they most likely got my attention faster than the guys walking in the front.

Wow I'd think they would be pissed at people just coming in the back. I've never even thought of doing that.

They may not answer calls when you try to reach them, but I bet they read their mail tho. Run a quick direct mail campaign and see if it's more effective than your cold calling technique. Either that, or... change niches altogether.

Sorry, (I'm not a big fan of direct mail) -I was a Resturaunt manger for several years and direct mail gets file 13 just like at home for the most part. - Best bet is to stick with visits or calls in the afternoons 2-4 as suggested previously. Your Host / Hostess or cashier is your gate keeper so try to know the manager by name before a face to face visit. Last thing a busy manger wants to hear is " Hey Boss some guy / gal up front is asking for a manager" If they are out seated and speaking with another employee or other managers find out when best time to return because your interrupting a training session or Manager meeting. Be flexable enough to return after the evening rush is over - NOT after close!! Some will meet with you during there wind down time but very few decision making managers stay till close, unless they are the owner of a small store. That's what they have assistant and shift managers for.
