Looking for a marketing idea for a arts studio

Today I spoke to a woman who owns an Arts studio. And when I say Arts, I mean things like voice lessons, various musical instrument lessons, and even painting, drawing, etc.

She said that her business is very slow right now and has very little money to start any kind of serious SEO work on her site (which it needs). But if I can get her some customers coming in, then she'll be able to loosen the purse strings to pay for a better site and monthly SEO work.

So I need to come up with a different kind of marketing idea that's inexpensive, yet gives results. So here's my thoughts.

She currently advertises in a local print magazine (she get's an amazing deal cause she knows the owner) and I'd like to place a QR code in her ad. This QR code will then go to a landing webpage that presents an offer of...

"Get A 30 Minute Lesson of Your Choice for FREE!"

Of course, the webpage will include more sales verbage but you get the point. Then once a customer uses the free 30 minute lesson and sees how great the place is, then they'll purchase more lessons for the future. She just needs a way to bring them in the door.

Now, the only thing I'm wondering is what's the best way to get people to accept the offer from the webpage?

Should it just be a phone number that they call for the free lesson? Should they have to enter an email and phone number and the studio owner will call them back? Should they just print (or show on their phone) some sort of coupon for the free lesson?

The main goal is to get people in the door, but it would be nice to be able to start building a list too. Maybe when someone calls for the free lesson, the owner will ask them for their email address on the phone. Then she can build a list from there.

Or do you have any other ideas that would help this woman get more customers?

Thanks.

Mike

    Videos videos videos...

Cheap to produce, showcase your talent, sell while you sleep, lots of potential exposure on a commonly understood platform (youtube).

QR codes are great, but there are still not very well known in the general market. We recently did some focus groups, ranging from families to a large group of high school kids, for one of our clients to see how they heard about our client and if they have noticed any new marketing techniques we are trying. ALL of them didn't have a clue what QR codes where and almost none of them have even heard of four square let alone checked in anywhere. That's not to say those technique don't/won't work, but you really have to find out who you are marketing too. If that magazine is geared toward the older crowd I would strongly consider something else.

That's not to discourage you at all because you can absolutely try that out and track the results. Especially where really it won't cost a thing to add it in there if she is already paying for that ad.

Why not start by re-writing her ads that she is already running. A new title alone could pull some big numbers. Test out a few different headlines and see what pulls the best.

Thanks Jason. That's true and video is one of the options we're looking into.

Sean. Good point about the demographics. I'll be calling the publisher of the magazine tomorrow to see if they have any demographics for their magazine. However, my guess is they won't simply because it's one of those local magazines that you can pick up on the way out of grocery stores....or read in doctors offices, etc. It's a free magazine for the local community.

But you never know. They may have data on who actually reads it.

As for the QR code, what I was going to do was include a QR code AND provide a website link that says something like "Visit whatever.com for a free 30 minute personal training session".
