Hey Guys

I know it can be frightening to sell to prospects, how awesome you are but here are some few tips to help you overcome your fright of selling.

Love these Comments, so I'm putting them here as additional resources.

Now fear of rejection, *that* I understand. That's a real concern but you can work past it by understanding that only a fraction of the people you talk to will:

* have a need for what you offer

* have the budget for what you offer

* be a personality "fit" with you and not become an awful client.

Stop trying to convert 100% of your prospects into clients and being disappointed when it doesn't happen: start getting feedback--prospects to qualify In or Out. And Out is just fine, thank you very much, because you and I don't need the hassle.
True but based on experience, I found out that people can not really sell themselves 90 percent of the time if they are not confident in their ability. Some underestimate their value.

Don't be afraid to take a couple no's it will just make you a better salesperson overall.

That is the way to go about. NO's are GOOD. How can you get better if you always hear Yes?

"I will Act now"

...My procrastination which has held me back was born of fear and now I recognize this secret mined from the depths of all courageous hearts.

Now I know that to conquer fear I must always act without hesitation and the flutters in my heart will vanish. Now I know that action reduces the lion of terror to an ant of equanimity. I will act now.

Henceforth, I will remember the lesson of the firefly who gives light only when it is on the wing... Let others be as butterflies who preen their wings yet depend on the charity of a flower for life.

I will not avoid the tasks of today and charge them to tomorrow for I know that tomorrow never comes...

I will act now... Henceforth, I will repeat these words again and again..., each hour, each day, every day, until the words become as much a habit as my breathing and the actions which follow become as instinctive as the blinking of my eyelids.

With these words I can condition my mind to perform every act necessary for my success...I can condition my mind to meet every challenge which the failure avoids. I will act now.

I will repeat these words again and again... When I awake I will say them and leap from my cot while the failure sleeps yet another hour. I will act now.

When I enter the market place I will say them and immediately confront my first prospect while the failure ponders yet his possibility of rebuff. I will act now.

When I face a closed door I will say them and knock while the failure waits outside with fear and trepidation. I will act now.

When I face temptation I will say them and immediately act to remove myself from evil. I will act now.

When I am tempted to quit and begin again tomorrow I will say them and immediately act to consummate another sale. I will act now.

Only action determines my value in the market place and to multiply my value I will multiply my actions. I will walk where failures fear to walk. I will work when the failure seeks rest.

I will talk when the failure remains silent.I will call on ten who can buy my goods while the failure makes grand plans to call on one. I will say it is done before the failure says it is too late. I will act now.

For now is all I have. Tomorrow is the day reserved for the labor of the lazy. I am not lazy. Tomorrow is the day when the evil becomes good. I am not evil. Tomorrow is the day when the weak becomes strong. I am not weak. Tomorrow is the day when the failure will succeed. I am not a failure. I will act now.

When the lion is hungry he eats. When the eagle has thirst he drinks. Lest they act, both will perish. I hunger for success. I thirst for happiness and peace of mind. Lest I act I will perish in a life of failure, misery, and sleepless nights. I will command, and I will obey mine own command. I will act now.

Success will not wait. If I delay she will become betrothed to another and lost to me forever. This is the time. This is the place. I am the man/woman.

I will act now.

Fear is real and not a nice acronym.

If your talk faster, heart rate increases, skin gets tight then these are real, just Internal actions, in your own body.

face the fear we all have them we have to confront them.

no trick, in overcoming, through a WSO or secret sauce of some guru.

P.S.- face the fear by speaking to small business. do it enough and you realize they are no better than you, not the bogeyman, ..... they are equals

I always found it interesting that a "brand new" salesperson comes in and sets things on fire with sheer excitement. The sales manager holds him or her up as a shining example to the sales people that have been around long enough to have the scars that all sales people aquire after a while. The new sales person beams with pride because he or she is being held up as the gold standard that the hardened veterans still aspire to become.

Of course, it's not long before the shining new star of the sales team falls into the ranks of the veterans. That same salesperson will be among those getting berated by the sales manager as the the new newest shining star is held up as the new example that the veterans should now aspire to be.

              So what happened?

              Sales training happend!

The new salesperson begins to learn everything to be afraid of. He learns that his self-image (which was probably fine) needs to be worked on. He learns that cold calling (which was probably thought of as just dialing the phone) is something to hate and be afraid of. He learns that he shouldn't be afraid to ask for the order (which he wasn't afraid of before) because that's what most of us are afraid to do. In short, he learns that everything he has been doing naturally is something that takes a long time to learn and develop and most of us don't do it correctly, therefore, how could he or she, possibly be skilled in these areas already.

Now I'm not saying that sales training isn't important. But I am saying that most sales training is conducted by people who are tasked with the responsibility of training merely because it's part of their job description. It's my personal belief that there are thousands of people that have left the sales profession because they were trained by people who had no business doing so.

To paraphrase an old saying: "those who can, do, those who can't, teach, and those who can't do either, become sales managers.

I believe it's important to understand the features and benefits of whatever it is you're selling. This can be taught.

I believe it's important to believe in what you're selling and to recognize how what your are selling will be of value to your prospect. I believe that you must have the ability to communicate that to your prospect. I also believe that this cannot be taught....and some sales manager telling me "what I must believe" (and passing that off as training) goes against every natural instinct.

I'm not disagreeing with anything else in this thread up to this point. I am only stating that it's been my experience that bad training causes an enormous amount of damage, and destroys what could have been very lucrative careers.

Adjusted for inflation, this has been my 93 cents.

True but some of us are not naturally gifted in speaking with others, some of us are shy and I think that's where training comes into place, getting you out of your shell and understanding that there is nothing to fear. 'NO' is simply just that. There is no damage to your health when a prospect tells you 'no'.

I think we need to stop taking it personal and realize that in sales you will get some No's. And I agree with you, those who teach this stuff must understand that selling should be a natural occurrence not be robotic.

I Hate being sold to by a robot.

    @David Miller:

Yes, most sales coaches/managers should NOT be in that role! It's a proven fact. Check out Dave Kurlan's OMGhub (I'm a huge fan of this guy).

Worst of all (which I express in one of my Three Dirty Secrets of Sales), the company sales manager is someone who the sales staff cannot share the truth of what is going on with! Doing so would be a potentially career-limiting move!

Independent sales coaches, who the salesperson can fully unburden themselves to and go over things without fear of criticism, are an absolute must for Sales success.

Here is the key to overcoming fear.... Say this three times per day... It will sink in to your 'subconscious" , that mysterious source which never sleeps and causes you to act in ways that you do not comprehend... I copy and pasted this from my forum, and it isnt the whole passage, just the stuff I thought was powerful for you.

This is a great thread because its so true what is being said. Only way you are going to get over your fear of doing something is sitting down and doing it...that is very true for cold calling. When I left Uni about 6 years ago I went to work for a media company in effectively a sales role. I had to sit there and pitch over the phone although I had never done it before. At first I was so scared but the fear of not hitting my target all of a sudden become much more pressing and although sudden focus!

Bingo...you doing it. Thing is if you focus you are going to do it, anyone can do it. Whenever you sell remember the USP's of the service/product, remember the offer, don't lie and just keep at it. Mr John Durham is the man to read...which you can do on the offline section.

Celenco good tips on the video. One should practice in the mirror if they're having problems with communicating and presenting their marketing services to a potential client or crowd. If you're not comfortable with yourself, how do you expect others to be comfortable with you? You have to be #1 in your eyes. As long as you have this.... you're good.

Its always appreciated when people go the extra mile to post things like this that dont lead out to another website. Shows a true intention of selflessness... Good for you C. Also giving others a place in your first post shows your intention here. You are good man! Thats why Im taking it upon myself to put your thread back at the top where it belongs!

So true, something as simple as looking in the mirror and practicing can be very powerful, sometimes we try to over complicate things and we forget that even the most complicated equation is still made up of the basics.

      • calenco - love the attitude!

while practicing in the mirror :

notice the repetition of what you say starts to become more believable.
(it fits with the "self-imp" technique of repeating affirmations)

example : asking for money that your not comfortable with. so the more you practice that repetition in the mirror, the more confidence you will convey and the easier it will be asking for the money!

        and have fun

          • yes. yes. YES!

when you can look at yourself and say real, authentic things...you can say it to anybody.

the natural inclination (self help 101) is to sell yourself 1st, right?

isn't the best "times in your life" when you could look yourself in the mirror?

with love, confidence, and "Zest for Life" you wanted to tell others?

give me the phone! I can sell anybody!! they need what I have over everything else!!!

Celenco you are so right. I have been in sales all my life and I have often seen those who are in fear of rejection. Sales is a numbers game. The more contacts you make the more money you make. It is that simple. Every "No" brings you that much closer to a "Yes."

I tell new sales associates to look at children. They never give up when they want something. Even if they have to ask ten times, the keep asking until you say yes. We don't have to be that tenacious but I've found most new sales associates are afraid to ask for the order. Trained associates know more about a product than 90% of other sales people, and 100% more than customers.

Never say, "What do you think," because they will say they want to think about it. Instead, give them an A-B Close. Example: Did you want that ____ in red or blue. Were you going to pay cash or pay-pal? Once they answer, they are closed. Just start writing up the order.

I think most people who venture themself into the offline marketing just don't see themselves as a real business. As a result they struggle to appear like one and convey the wrong message. What most of us need is the confidence that we can give to those businesses what they want... Anyway, great tips Joel. Thanks

That is another problem, how can you call yourself a business when you see what you do as a hobby?
