Major City domain name??

Hey guys, I got a little idea I need your thoughts on...
Not mind blowing stuff, and it may already have been covered somewhere...
I know how to build and rank local sites but I want to start thinking big.
I have noticed that I can get hold of a few large City domain names with decent extensions.
My idea is to get them then build pages for towns within, then businesses within these again. (city.com/town/business)
I want to scale up my rent a site model and I am thinking this will be a lot easier. Obviously saving on domains but at the same time building an authority site for the that City.
Do you think I would struggle to get interest? Meaning businesses would rather have a more exclusive domain to themselves instead of being within 1 large directory site.
Maybe more to the point, this is probably too much like what Yell is like I guess, and that is exactly what I don't want?

    Well, I ve been in the business directory years ago with site like city.tld and did not really made money, to be honest, businesses believes on brands just like you will buy a Ford pick-up and not a Kiwanda (example) pick-up truck. So Yellow pages and other well known established directory like website are unbeatable.
    Your idea looks similar to a directory website with the exception of business name as subdirectory.

    What could work with your idea is webdesign and hosting for offline but thats what 80% of WSO on offline marketing does.

    You get a hosting reseller account, get business to have a website, mobile site... and host there. Add more services like marketing...

    If you're actually ranking those inner pages and providing leads for the businesses, I don't think it would matter too much to them. If it is just functioning as a directory site, it will probably matter more...

    In the end it really is going to depend on how you position things.
