D**n Telemarketers Calling on Cell Phone

Just curious if anyone else if having telemarketers call on their cell phone?

I see more and more of that happening, and I'd love to tar and feather the ... uh ... people responsible for that kind of interruption marketing.

BTW, I do differentiate between land line calls and cell phone calls, so this minor rant only applies to cell phones.

    Those telemarketing Wascals r at it again! Sheesh. With more and more people opting to not have land lines and using their cell phone numbers as a primary contact, that's going to happen. In addition, the government has cleared the way to allow collection agencies to use robo-calling on cell phones.

    Put your phone number on the Do Not Call list (http://www.donotcall.gov) and next time the telemarketer calls explain to them that they need to update their list. Let them know they are calling a cell phone and it is illegal to do so. The FTC has stated multiple times that calling cell phones for telemarketing is illegal because it potentially costs the person receiving the call money.

    It might take awhile, but slowly you will stop receiving telemarketing calls on your cell phone.

      • FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.
      • The federal government does not maintain a national cell phone registry. Personal cell phone users have always been able to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry -- the same Registry consumers use to register their land lines -- either online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 from the telephone number they wish to register. Registrations become effective within 31 days of signing up and are active for five years. There is no cut-off date or deadline for registrations.
      • Business-to-business calls are not covered under the Registry.

      The problem here is that it was an automated voice message. So I have the choice of having by time stolen by them to get them to comply with the law ... or by me being irritated .

      Something I always thought would work would be to have the telemarketing service charged enough to get them to change their ways when they call someone on the Do Not Call list, or a cell phone.

      I used to work for Capital One Credit Cards and this is the same thing that our supervisors would tell us to tell customers to do to stop us from calling them. Some people didn't want to do this and cursed us out... so they received another phone call about 2 minutes later lol.

        Clearly any of us that have used the phone as a method of doing business should stop at once. I for one can no longer sleep at night knowing that I may have caused anyone this amount of stress. Not to mention that they may not like me and I simply can't have that.

        I hope that all of you who have been using the phone to set appointments, sell products or services, or for any other business endeavor cease as well. We simply cannot add to the stress of so many people by having them answer their phone.

          I don't think anyone can make cold calls very much on the phone without developing a callous attitude about interruption marketing (as Seth Godin calls it.)

          One *really* funny telemarketing call I once received ... it made my day.

          A telemarketer called from what appeared to be a fake business. I asked him to remove my name from the list. He said no, and hung up .

          I wonder how telemarketing gets such a bad reputation? And I also wonder why I have to pay the phone bill when I get more telemarketing calls than people trying to get in touch with me?

          Fortunately, I don't have to answer many telemarketing calls as the dialers they use have a somewhat brain damaged design ... I can hear when an autodialer (I think that is the correct term) has called my number and hang up.

          Just another game.

            Doesn't that depend on the competence of an individual telemarketing firm? Also, I believe Marvin specifically stated he knows the distinction between landline calls and cellphone ones and that he's only complaining about the latter. I'm not sure it'd be wise to just lump the former with it IMO.

    Ahh, that makes sense about the automated messages. I guess you are right, it is really how much time you want to spend on it. I know that a lot of telemarketing firms will routinely scrub their lists against the Do Not Call list, so you might as well add your number and even if it takes a month or so, you will see the calls decrease.

    Just to clarify what the OP is saying. He's not mad about he telemarketing call but rather that it is on his cell phone... That makes sense if you are having to pay for the call but I just found it strange that the call itself wasn't what made him mad. ;-)

    @ttrfantaic - Being irritated by the call itself is another rant . John's many postings have done a pretty good job of educating me that telemarketing works.

    <bit longer explanation>

    The fact that something works and legal doesn't mean it is ethical or should be done. I've read several reports that robbing a bank is one of the "safest" ways of getting money. The only difference there is that it is illegal.

    More generally, I don't feel that interruption marketing (I think that is Seth Godin's term) is a good thing regardless of being legal. As marketers, we should be better than that.

    And the DNC list is implemented backwards, i.e. having to opt out of something instead of opting in. Crazy.

    That gets more into the issues of why I think telemarketing can be and is abused. It doesn't mean that telemarketing in itself is bad, just how some people chose to implement it.

    You can report the call to the FCC at fcc.gov. I have been getting these robocalls about credit card rate reduction. I report every one of them. If more people reported this abuse maybe someone will take notice and lower the boom on these maggots.

    got a call on my cellphone,too! what I'm confused about is that I never give out my mobile number just like that. I'm not surprised about calls on my land line but not not on my cellphone. T'was a lady selling me some vacuum.

      and by the way, the call came from this phone number 602-246-1296. When I looked it up online, it came up in the telephone scams watchdog site called CALLERCENTER and it was being reported for scam. All i could say was "Wow!"

    When I get this sort of call, I ask a lot of questions, get them to explain all kind of stuff, act REALLY excited about the product, and WHAT REALLY A FREE CAMERA TO!? Then when I get bored I just go (abruptly) "I am not interested *click*".

      With all due respect to the originator of this thread I find it hard to believe that there is still any activity here. If you are so disturbed by calls to your cell phone than you can simply choose to not answer your phone if it's an unrecognized number. The simple reality is that more people than ever before are giving up land lines for cell phones and there's no way for any sales organization to tell the difference, nor should they have to.

      Yes, I agreee there are bad and rude telemarketers as there are bad and rude people in every profession. To assume that every person that uses the phone as a sales tool falls into that category is small minded and in itself, a rude assumption.

      Frankly, your complaint about telemarketing should be aimed at an audience that feels any attempt to conduct commerce should be questioned as to it's moral value and ability to contribute to the greater good. I suggest you may want to find some blogs or forums posted by the "occupy wallstreet" bunch.

      The WF and particularly this Forum within it, serves a purpose for many who are facing the daily challenge of building a business. The "fear of the phone" is rampant among many of us and we look to this vehicle for methods, inspiration, and help to work past those fears. You can read the many threads in this forum where members have left their comfort zone and met levels of success they didn't expect because they received the information and motivation to use the phone.

      Now this thread comes along and as a result, someone who may have been ready to pickup the phone and pursue his or her dream of operating their own business, now has second thoughts. Because a few people feel that a phone call is an "intrusion" into their life, you feel that it's your duty to set things right by creating this negative diatribe.

      Sales is a profession that takes courage. Picking up the phone and calling a total stranger takes courage. I know that to many this is a statement that will never be accepted, but every great achievement in history took sales skills and the courage to present an idea.

      We need to recognize that when who you refer to a "telemarketer" calls, it may very well be someone who took a deep breath, and with all the courage they could muster, dialed your number. Their goal is simply to share an idea, and give you the opportunity to say yes, no.

      That person on the other end of the phone that you callously "played along with" to show how clever you are, is trying to pay their bills, feed their kids, pay their taxes, and they set an example that should be emulated, not disparaged.

      To any who may be reading this thread because they are still wondering if using the phone is going to a viable way to get their business going and growing, it absolutely is! Don't let the nonsense in this thread prevent you from doing what you need to do in order to bring your product to market. If you stop what you're doing because someone "has their day ruined" by a phone call, than you are denying your product to someone who may need exactly what you're offering.

      Remember that it's their day that you ruined....not yours!

      Always remember that "hanging up" is a two way proposition.

    @David Miller - Well, I think we are going to have to agree to disagree here.

    I don't disagree that telemarketing works. And I doubt that you would disagree with someone saying that spam works. Two different worlds, but with the same idea ... contact a group of people. Some will be interested, most will not.

    Both are effective in their own way.

    But I was talking about calls on my cell phone.
