[Self-possitoning] How do you explain what do you do?

I tried "marketing consultant", "business growth specialist", "profitability expert" , but none of them light any fire in people eyes... How do you call yourself when you speak with "offline people"? There must a a term that would raise interest without looking like another money wasting clown.

When people ask me "what do you do" I'm almost lost... I do SO much that I don't know where to start to impress them. While helped many in writing the elevator speech I'm helpless in working with my own self. What do you guys and gals say and what response do you get?

Find three typical emotional and urgent reasons people do business with you, specifically for the field you're approaching. These will resonate and tell your prospects that you understand their world and their problems. Puts you far ahead of the features & benefits slinging salesperson.

As far as determining what to say when people ask you what you do:

If you had to pick one thing you were best at, what would it be? Start from there, and lead in to all the other things you're capable of once you get the conversation going.

I'm not saying that's necessarily how you want to present yourself to prospective clients, however. If you're able to dig around and figure out what services they want/need the most, you can always initiate with that.

Your approach so far seems to be to stick yourself in a box. The problem with this is:

    Some people hate experts
    Some people detest consultants
    Some people don't trust specialists

You have to ask yourself "WHO GIVES A CRAP WHAT YOU CALL YOURSELF ???"

    Answer ... no one ...

Now we have that out of the way... here's what you could do.

You could tell people the kinds of problems you fix.

For example, your conversations could go like this:
    "What do you do?"

"I'm glad you asked, I help people that are frustrated that they aren't getting enough traffic to their websites. Whatever they try, they can't seem to get enough of the right people on there.
    "

    OR
    "What do you do?"

"I work with successful business owners that are looking to beat the recession and build their businesses in 2012. They are usually looking for ways to get their potential customers to call them, rather than spending fortunes on telemarketing"

I hope you get the idea. Position yourself. Work at it. Be THE GO TO GUY for people... and stop whacking a label on yourself.

Chris is spot on with this one. It truly is not the title. It is how you handle the rest of the conversation.

If you want help with a script hire that out. There are professionals in that area, Chris has a good opening line there. You may hit him up for a $200 script. I know a good scripts are worth the money.

I would help you my friend but I do not plug my services on threads. I dont know if Chris ever thought about scripts but he has a good opening there for you. I know John Durham also writes them.

I really like that! When I'm talking to people socially and they ask what I do, I just say, "I own a mobile marketing company that helps small businesses get a higher return on their existing advertising." I like to keep it simple.

As for when I'm talking to other business owners, I also like to keep it simple, but I work on making the connection of being a fellow business owner. This helps keep us on an even playing field and not just having them look at me as "some salesmen."

Like anything, you need to figure out something that works for you and just work on refining it. There is no "right" way to identify yourself, just like there is no "right" way to do a sale. (Certainly there are some wrong ways though!) Every situation is unique and you have to adapt to the moment.

I usually say something such as
"I help small businesses get free leads from the internet"
        or
"I work with small businesses to help them get noticed on the internet"

It varies depending upon the audience.

I agree...my business card says "Search Engine Dominator"...sounds like a superhero..anyway it is a fun card that catches their attention. As far as what I do, I tell people that I can help them get visibility on the internet...and that's it. If they ask for more, I start by telling them about one service that they can easily relate to like press releases.

"I get clients for businesses using the Internet"

Probably could be a whole lot better though
