Google Places question: Google accounts

Hello,

I wish to offer help with Google Places to a potential client. Their business doesn't have any form of Google account at the moment. Is there a way to open an account and then claim the Google places listing on behalf of the customer? If so, is it then normal practice to hand the account over to the client so that they have control?

Alternatively, do you normally request that the client opens the Google account before proceeding further? In this case, would you then ask them to add you as a user of their Google account?

You can just open it in their name and manage the account. If they want to do it themselves or if you don't have any sort of ongoing agreement you can just give them the login info for the account.

I'm not sure I understand fully. Are you saying that the business is not even listed on Google Places yet and you want to submit the business yourself? If so, then you can just submit the business yourself. This will not give you access to the business as the owner though - it just gets it listed with Google. It is better to do this as a separate account than the one that actually claims the listing. Once you have that done and you have signed the business up for your services, you can then verify the listing with their account or one that you setup for them. However you proceed, it is best to do confirmation in conjunction with the business.

Thanks for the info. Yes, the business is not listed in Google Places yet and I want to get as far as possible prior to involving the business directly. I'm just practicing at this stage on my brother-in-law's business.

If I go to Google Places and log in with my personal Google account then
I get to the initial screen which asks for the Business country and telephone number. There is also message from Google which states:

"...Tip: Before you create a business listing, think about which Google Account you are using. In the future, you may want to share this account with other people at your business..."

This leads me to think I should open a new Google account. This is where I was unsure about precislely what to do. I could open another Google account which is attributable to me or I could try to open a new Google account which is attributable to the client's business. I wasn't sure if Google allowed you to set up accounts that are not attributable to you. My understanding of what you've said is that it's OK to set up an account on behalf of another business.

If the client has a listing but no Google account I create one for them and hand it over once their site is in the 7 box.

I set up one clients' Google listing from scratch and verified another listing. I created gmail accounts for each and I kept sign-in/pswd (they paid for places page updates videos, photos, coupons, events). I used it for their website Google analytics monthly reports.
That gmail I set up is not put on anything public nor on the places page. Several Google places business verification options. Easy to have separate gmail accounts for clients and turn over to them if you part ways.
Just keep a spreadsheet of all those accounts, user names and pswds. Create gmail in business name anyway so no one swipes it.
Congrats on your progress so far.

If I was you I would create a Google account for them and set the google places up under that account. If you plan on selling google places you will need to create each client a Google account for a few reason, one becuase they are paying you for it and need access, too you may run into problems if you are using your account.

      Do this.

The best practice is to create a NEW google account with the business name as the email address - like xenoncorporation@gmail.com or whatever - and ONLY USE THAT ACCOUNT to conduct business on behalf of your client.

Doing this is doubly helpful for setting up Google Adwords, Google Adsense, Google Analytics...you get the idea.

The client needs to own the account but you can have the login and password to work on their listing. If one of my clients needs an account I open it for them and then they confirm it for me.
