Groupon cleans them out again.

Now they're over the big pond raping British merchants.

"...what has happened to us has ruined our whole year. I wouldn't wish it on our worst enemy."

"We realized that we became Groupon slaves."

Here's more harsh evidence to convert merchants to your own campaigns instead of losing their shirt and pants to Groupon.

I still check Groupon almost daily and I have no idea how any of them make any money. Aside from the fact that the discounts are so inflated, people start to equate the value of the product at that price rather than the regular price. So not only are they taking a huge hit on the front end, no one wants to come back and pay twice as much for the same product after that.

I understand how you can make money with Groupon with a proper online strategy but it's easy to see how the average business owner can have it blow up in their face.

What would you suggest for an online strategy?

  • The one that got me, (I don't have the article) was from a cafe owner who was using a 15.00 coupon - when her average sale was less than 1/2 that. What kind of advice did they get to try that?

She lost her shirt naturally, (maybe she should have started a topless cafe...:rolleyes but I was curious how Groupon worked after that...

Two good counter strategies are showing the merchant how to set up their own coupon program on social media, web, and mobile platforms.

Generate subscribers by offering a coupon for "like" on facebook and texting "coupon" or code to merchant.

Then the merchant can send out coupons to these lists on demand to drive traffic. If he has a slow night, he can text or post a discount coupon for a "daily deal special" to fill tables.

This gives them a manageable "daily deals" program they can control and not go bankrupt.

This gets you facebook page, mobile site, and text messaging set-up and monthly management services.

There are a number of coupon WSO's and plug-ins on the forum.
