Wouldn't a local business not want you to help a competitor?

Let's say you sell website design services or any other form of online marketing.

Do you ever get objections from business owners saying that they don't want you to help them if you help their competition?

Or does this depend on what you are selling? For example, web design may not be a big deal but an Adwords service most definitely is.

It is an upsell for sure. Exclusivity is a premium service and you should get paid for that.

A buddy of mine got into an argument with me recently. He told me that selling website creation services to the same niche of people (Dallas plumbers, for example) is not a good way of doing business you are helping out everyone. I understand things like Adwords can be exclusive, but what about things like web design?

Your buddy doesn't know what he's talking about. My mentor and old boss, exclusively runs a web design business aimed at pet websites. Whether it is a rescue, vet, ecommerce.. thats all he does all day long, and they bring in 6 million a year. He is great at dominating a niche. He dominated church websites, then travel and now pets.

When it comes to SEO, you would be in a good position to be competing with yourself, but it definitely restricts you in that sense. PPC, and SEO, if you can offer exclusive services then its an upsell. Web design does not need to be exclusive and I would never offer THAT in an exclusive deal.

Within a specific area I don't do any marketing for businesses which are close competitors.

I never want to get into any kind of conflict of interest issues.

I don't offer that as as upsell. I do mention it when in negotiations for the contract.

          My prices reflect that.

Good point Dexx. It's a great upsell like iAmNameLess said.

With certain services such as Google Places/Local SEO and SMS Marketing, I would not sell to a local direct competitor and would mention that in closing the sale. With Websites, I don't see any reason for exclusivity.

They probably don't want you to work for a competitor - but if that is your only leg to stand on so they buy your services I wouldn't count on that route converting very well for you.
