My Offline / Online Plan of Action

Hi Warriors,

I have combines several ideas from here to create an action plan that will allow me to make a killing offline. I would like to share my ideas and get any feedback, suggestions or tips.

So here it is:

I have bought (city)businessreviews.com and (city)dailydeal.com. I plan to go to local businesses in person and offer them a free listing on the business review site , I figured this will get me in the door, and I will have something to offer, so that will be a good way to start building value. I will do their free listing, take a picture of their shop or whatever and write a short summary. This also gives me fresh, new content fast and easy for my site. I figure this will take me 10-15 minutes max. I will pitch them my services and also offer to "upgrade their listing" and I can do a video commercial, SEO, Fanpages, Twitter Background, Site Re-designs etc, and offer my services to them. Hopefully I would have gained my trust at this point, and it will be more likely to get them if I offer something upfront for free.

Even if they don't buy something from me, I will still list them on the review site as a regular listing. This will make me look like an authoritative figure in the area, and hopefully gain their trust. If they do buy from me they will get a premium listing and I will also offer to feature them on the dailydeal.com site for their support. (Since they paid for my services and all.)

I also plan on doing mailers to the local zip code based on offers and coupons from the dailydeal website. I may start with about 5,000 and go up from there as I get a bigger customer base. If a local business buys my package,& gets included in the dailydeal site I will leave business-card sized ads with QR codes with a link to the dailydeal site. More than likely they will want to distribute the cards, since their business will be featured on the site and it gives them more exposure. As it grows I will mail to more and more homes within this zip code, and really try to reach as many consumers in the area.

The focus is to build a huge list of local people, I figured this would be golden, and the business owners are actually helping me build my list by distributing my business-card sized ads (with the QR code to the dailydeal site!)

I plan to grow my dailydeal site members by a.) Having the business-card sized cards to give away at the places that accept my offer. b.)by doing mailers and having them subscribe to the dailydeal site to get more special offers c.) by using facebook and twitter.

In the end I will have :
A huge list of local consumers in this specific zip code
An authoritative direcotry / review site with tons of content
A Daily Deal site that will be LOCAL only and will have a ton of subscribers.
Tons of Cash from doing offline deals!

Any tips? Advice? Suggestions?

Make sure not to appear too "pushy" on this first visit.
Offer them something free - don't try to upsell, you'll get more "no"s than you can count.

Once it's set up, send them an email, show their listing so that they see their value. Then try to get a conversation going - and that's a good point go "present" your services.

    Cheers,

I offer you this added idea. Try Linked-In. It is a site which lets you link with others, both in your market and outside your market, and allows you to tell those you link with what you have to offer. Then, when you work your B2B offer, you can include the idea that they can also link with others, and get exposure through Linked-In.
I am listed with Linked-In, and currently have linked with around 400 other businesses, plus a number of others who don't have, or work for a business.

It will probably be easier to sell the premium services if you have real listings to show other companies. Here's a twist on your plan. Offer a premium (or maybe slimmed down version of the premium) to the first company that signs up in each category. Make it a subscription model (might want to do 6 months so they don't feel too locked in). This way you'll get a whole bunch of guys, that if you build it up over the next 6 months, will see a lot of value in keeping the premium listing you created for them when it is time to renew (or maybe upgrade to your "premium-premium" offering). It may be a slower way to get cash flow, but I think you are then helping to quickly build a nice directory with a lot of premium listings and truly adding value to the local businesses.

    Good on ya!

I made a KILLING last year with a local directory site. It's a great concept and it works VERY well.

Matthew were you doing something similar, or were you charging purely for listings on your directory?

        Hello,

I've been hiding behind the scenes here at WF for the last couple of weeks but this thread finally got me excited enough to make my first post. This is almost exactly the project I am working on right now also. My directory will hoepfully go live next week and I'll be out visiting and calling local businesses after that. I'm really excited about using the free listings to build a realtionship and coming back later with paid services to offer (website creation/hosting, social media, direct mailings, a local coupon site, SEO, etc.).

It's encouraging to see others trying this route as well.

        Good luck to you!

        • Hi lambkr01,
Awesome! That is exciting that someone else is also doing this. I have done a lot of research and am still doing a lot more. I think that going to businesses to offer free listings will not be as intimidating as walking in with an offer. Yeah this might take more time, but I hope that it will pay off. I'm looking for ways to combine online and offline, and hopefully create a good niche in the area that will bring me repeat business.

Yeah I completely agree that going in with a free offer and building the relationship before really selling anything will be helpful in the long run (although it will probably take more time to get rolling).

I was wondering... How are you building your directory? I've been hand coding HTML/CSS/PHP for mine and it's been quite tedious and I'm not entirely happy with how it's looking, although it will work. Lately I've seen a few different Wordpress themes that have got me interested so I might try those out, but I was just curious about how you were doing it.

            Thanks!

I like this BUT on Twitter and facebook what can you post 3x a day IF the client does not give you anything of value to post? No specials or coupons are you just tweeting other stories, post etc??? What can you really twet about interesting to the follower?
