Offline - Email Prospecting - Does it work?

Hi everyone.... I keep hearing different ideas when it comes to prospecting for clients using email. Some people (mainly those who have created WSOs on the topic) claim that they get all clients using email. Most other people say that you just cannot get away from either talking face to face or at least on the phone.

Your viewpoint?

I have started plenty of conversations via email alone. Perhaps 10% I have closed solely with email; 90% I closed over the phone. I don't do in person.

I have had people email me, and close the sale without ever speaking on the phone.

What I have noticed is this.

ONLY email communication, you get less money, and more problems. If there is any kind of delay or problem, then they are less likely to understand, and more likely to issue a dreaded chargeback or a bad review. I just closed a site for $2,500 a couple weeks ago where it was no communication except email. I then asked when a good time to chat over the phone, because I wanted to make sure there was no major personality issue, and I wanted to make sure some trust was there before accepting the payment.

For generating new sales, I would say email is not ideal. It COULD work, but it could also take more time, and less effective than other avenues. It shouldn't be ignored, and is a great way to reach out to other businesses during hours you can not call!

I started my whole online venture using Email, spypig and followup phone calls.

    Consider this:

You target just one vertical - you have proof that you can service that niche doing whatever service it is that you do, whether its setting up websites, classified ads, videos or whatever and then you go after just that niche market....

If you can commit to sending out at least 5 to 10 emails a day that showcase your worth in that field and you see people opening your email more than once...do you think that they're interested in what you might be talking about?

I mean the person that opened my email 3 times in a 2 day period, but hasn't called me is obviously interested, and if I've played my cards right I can follow up with that individual and offer HELP.

That's what I have been doing and have considerably "crushed it" as they say. Its definitely working in a vacuum, requires dedication and focus, but it does work.

    Hope that was helpful.

Interesting topic. Appreciate everyone's feedback. My question is on metrics...Assuming the research was solid (Good niche offer, right vertical market, etc) what kind of response rate do you typically get from emailing?

Is it 1 reply out of 10, 1 out of 50, 1 out of 100....or even higher?

      Thx,
      Dave

Hi...I will weigh in on this because I have been doing offline marketing since early 2000's. I use email a lot to prospect customers, but never to try and sale or close a sale. My emails are designed for them to take action by going mostly to watch a video and download a report. Once I get the phone call back, I am careful to not pitch to much over the phone but rather listen as their interest is tweaked now.

One thing about email that I found is interesting and that is the people who respond are pretty warm to you because they mostly likely have been thinking about what you have offered them. Most just don't say "I think I will respond to that email." The subject peaked their interest. Think of email marketing same as you think of your overall sales funnel. Outline the process...what do you want to say and what do you want them to do and make sure your email copy leads them through this process.

Hope this helps a little...didn't mean to write a book.

That's very good Reddoch. I agree. You still have to close them personally. As I asked a minute ago, what has been your experience, as far as typical response rates or, what do you base your efforts on expecting? 1 out of 10, 1 out of 100, etc?

      Thx,
      Dave

  • I have done alot of offline business, infact most of my income is generated offline.

Email marketing is good ONCE you have already made contact with the lead! This is important.

I would say a face to face meeting is the best chance you can get at selling internet marketing services.

Phone calls are also powerful marketing tool but you'll need to be ready for alot of regection before you get some meetings lined up.

The best way of generating local business is via networking events. This by far is the best (and free!) way. Every town and city has them.

Good luck what ever you decide too do.

My mainstream business is offline and I am always being approached to sell me advertising and the like. I can tell you now, I never respond to email marketing unless I have previously spoken to the person.

Email prospecting is a numbers game, the more you send the more replies you get. I currently get between 2 to 5% return per 100 emails sent so up to 5 new clients per week once you sort out all the replies which is not bad.

I also do a lot of door knocking and this gets a 10 to 15% return so it really depends on how much work you want and if you don't mind going out to speak to people face to face.
