Overcoming Google Places Listings

I am in the process of building local lead generation sites for various niches. I am concerned that my efforts could be in vain to rank organically if there are Google Places listings that will appear above mine. Anyone have any experience on how much traffic a #1 organic listing gets when there are GP listings above it?

    My experience is not as much as the GP listings. It used to be that you could still rank in the Places listings even if you were outside of that immediate geographic area, but Google has really clamped down on that. I had a few sites that sill rank #1 but got pushed out of the Places listings.

    I think Google's ultimate goal was to push more people to Adwords. It seems to be working.
