Google Places A and F slot? Am I missing something?

So, I have a new client, and I am doing some of the research and getting back to him with what I can provide him (along the lines of SEO/google places/Adwords management), what sort of competition he has, the amount of searches and keywords that get searched the most, etc etc.

So, if you google "tree removal fairfax va" (this guy owns a tree removal company) you will see the same person in the A and F slot? At least from my search it is ( I am searching from SC) .

I did not know it was possible to hold two slots? Then the guy is ranked #1 organically. So within the first 8 things you see outside of Adwords, he has got 3 spots.

A more Google places savvy experienced warrior: how is that possible? I mean, the website and address are the same..

First time I had come across this.. (A and F slot)

it is duplicate listing..one by Google which owner never claimed..I think owner did it intentionally leave it(I might be wrong) and create other one by owner...

My best guess is that the duplicate was created because of the data coming from here: Jl Tree Svc Incorporated, Fairfax, VA : Reviews and maps - Yahoo! Local

Furthermore, as Catalyst said, there is a slight difference in the business names as per current. However, I don't really think that is the main cause for the appearance of the duplicate. The edit history of this duplicate seems really messy, so I guess somewhere there is hidden the key to uncovering why exactly this happened.

I've shared some good practices of dealing with duplicates here:

I just love how the unverified listing with zero reviews is ranking in the A spot and the verified listing with 23 reviews is in the F spot! EPIC!

I am curious as to why the unverified listing has more citations attributed to it. Is it due to the space between J and L in the business name only?

Russ I have no idea, it baffles me, even with just a basic understanding of GP, but yeah that guy is my guy's #1 competitor. Just started on his SEO 10 days ago, about to get his GP rocking to.

Using a warrior to outsource the GP completely, we should be good, but yeah, I was like.. "huh?" ..

Google does goofy stuff with places listings all the time. We have claimed and verified listings only to see Google pump out a duplicate because the name changed slightly. Use the "report a problem" link on the listing and stay on Google with follow-up.
