4k Offline - Help me help you/myself :)

I thought I would post what I’m up to this month, sort of as an accountability thing and trying to help out the community.

My goal this month is to make an extra 4k of NEW business. I know 4k doesn’t sound like a lot, but:
  • I chose a value that even newbies could attain
  • I have a crap load of other stuff to do (existing clients)
  • Its a good round number

My rules:
  • I wont count any income that comes from pre-existing clients (referrals, deals already in the pipeline, etc...), this has to be NEW
  • No excuses - being busy with my existing clients is not an excuse... having a hot wife that is distracting is not an excuse (its a good one though, ha), etc...
  • I will spend at least 5 minutes a day updating everyone (whether here or twitter: https://twitter.com/offlinepeter - I created that account just for this)
A little about myself:
I own a small business in the Midwest (USA) where I do mostly marketing and web development. Most of my clients are referrals from other clients. This is great because they are basically pre-sold, but also sucks because I can’t just flip a switch to get more clients.

Like many, I’ve always struggled getting new clients. I’ve never had any formal sales training and am just not all that good at it, probably because I don’t put much time into it. Once I get a client I almost never loose them, but getting them is tough.

My Simple Plan:
I’m just going to do the basics, direct mail and calling. Cold calling sucks... but if you send a letter first, its no longer cold... its lukewarm.

I'll be selling web development, PPC management, SMS, and email marketing.... just so you know.

So here it is:

1. Send 30+ letters a day to businesses OR cold call 50+ businesses a day
I have a list of qualifiers, so I won’t just be blasting everyone, but I’ll be targeting people who have:
  • done groupons
  • used yellow pages/dex
  • used valpak
  • done PPC advertizing
  • etc...
Again, I’m not just blasting everyone, I qualify them a little first. I use this basically: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...rxs4Qb1LA/edit

2. Call each business after a couple days
I’ll say this just so everyone knows... cold calling sucks, it works, but sucks. My little “trick” that makes it way less painful is sending the letter first. Then when your talking to the gatekeeper and owner, you can simply say, “I sent you a letter and was just checking on it” or “its in regards to the letter I sent”.

3. Setup my own mailout:
I’m talking about something like: http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...onth-hero.html

I’ve been trying to think of a way to get those never-done-internet-but-done-lots-of-yellowpages-newspaper-direct-mail businesses to easily become clients before stepping them into the world of the internet. This is it. You get clients that trust you using methods they already know work (direct mail, this is where targeting valpak businesses comes in), and then have them integrate “newer” techniques with the old school, ie SMS, email marketing, PPC, etc...

So what do I need the warriors for?
One word... accountability.

I recently lost 16 lbs because I entered in to a competition with a buddy. Basically whoever didnt make the weight loss goals every week, was punished by waking up at 5:30AM to workout for the next week... YUCK

This is the same thing, I’m using ALL OF YOU as my motivation and accountability partners.

So what I need is for you to yell at me if I don’t get things done
. When was the last time someone actually wanted to you to yell at them when they screwed up .

...your prospects have to read the letter to make it a warm call. And they have to care about the topic.

Most unsolicited mail ends up in the trash bin. You may have to send direct mail 7 or more times before it gets read and appreciated. Just a word of caution...

Oh for sure... thats why I said "lukewarm", its not warm, it just ease's the pain of cold calling. Its sooo much easier to get by gatekeepers by sending something first.

If they did throw it away, they will be way less defensive and likely to hear your out b/c you weren't just spam mailing (since your calling), If they didn't toss it, you gave something to easily create a conversation rather than a sales pitch.

    Good luck sir!

If you're going to direct mail people for prospecting, try sending out a postcard once or twice, then a letter.

    Go get 'em!

Very cool that you are posting this. I know It's really tough to stay on task when you are only accountable to yourself. It is so easy to rationalize that things you are doing are adding value to your business when you know in your heart that you are not necessarily engaging in the activities that will truly add long term value to your business. Next thing you know, a month has passed and, while you were "busy", you didn't do things that you knew had to be done. The only way I was able to overcome this was to schedule specific times for the activities that I knew I had to do. 10-11:30 AM, every day, no matter what, starting at exactly 10:00 AM (not a minute later) I would stop what I was doing and mail 25 new prospect letters. Make 10 new prospect calls. Ask 5 existing clients for referrals etc. Nothing takes precedence. If it means I have to work 1/2 hour later or get up an hour earlier the next day, so be it. It's amazing how much I was able to accomplish.
Best of luck to you on reaching the next level Peter!

Yup, for prospecting for the direct mail piece, I thought about sending out some 9x12 postcards to businesses saying "Did this get your attention? What if you could send this to 10k of your customers for $.05 a household?". I thought that would probably get some calls back. But I think I'll just do some cold calling on that tomorrow since I think it will be easier to sell than PPC/SEO/etc...

Yeah, I've tried that. Didn't have much luck with it since it wasn't flexible enough. For time management I do a kinda GTD + Covey mix (Priacta - Time Management Training, Coaching, Software) but that doesn't really have a good way to measure your productivity time. So I've started doing The Pomodoro Technique® along w/ my TRO to keep track of the time... It helps a lot.

      What I did today
I was a little slow today since I had a meeting that was longer than expected... but got 33 (would be 38 but I ran out of envelopes) letters ready to go today.

I send a bunch of other leads off to my VA so she can organize them and format them the way I want them. I'll do some cold calling and more mailing tomorrow.

I'm planning on cold calling a bunch of valpak people tomorrow... we'll see how it goes.

Alright, here is my progress for today.

I cold called 45 people today, I pushed mostly new websites to non-website owners and a couple of the direct mail deal.. I wanted to do more, but had a long meeting and blah blah excuses . Here are my results:

    - 7 not interested
    - a bunch of no answer/owner not their (I used first names from manta)
    - 2 good leads, one very interesting in the direct mailing even though I started pushing websites. The other needs a website and will setup an apt tomorrow (I got cell and email), sounded very interested but also sounded crazy busy.

Not a bad day I guess. Tomorrow I'll be calling >100 I hope.

Things are going well, here is my update:

    Cold called 34 businesses today

    - got 1 "lets do this and my girlfriends biz"
    - 1 "already has a website but mail him more info"
    - 1 "brother doing site but its been a couple months, mail him info"
    - 1 "interested but I'm at full capacity now so don't want more biz"
    - 3 no-ways
    - the rest no answer or owner not in's.

I also did some (5-10, I don't remember) cold walk-ins with my "postcard" prototype. People are a lot nicer that way than on the phone, but you spend to much time not talking to the right people.

Selling the postcard is... different. I usually sell websites, then upsell later to seo, ppc, social, etc... Selling websites to someone who really needs one is easy. But, I have 1 guy that I can probably get if I'm persistent. Other than that I've put the seed out there a lot but no commits yet.

I find it difficult to get to the decision maker when approaching larger businesses. Sometimes its the owner and sometimes its not. Everyone is saying, "can you email me the info?". So I'm creating a video of me doing sales pitch of the card so they can see it (my prototype) and I'll send out a bunch of videos tomorrow.

Any one have any suggestions for getting the decision maker when its a larger company (like the type that would spend 2k a month on valpak)?

I think you're probably targeting the wrong people. Clients with big advertising budgets are going to be much much more difficult to get a hold of. This is true whether it's for websites, SEO, or print advertising.

If you're selling my "hero" thread system, you need to target the small businesses which will be easier to get the owners attention. If you're looking to target big budget clients, you'll need to pitch them on targeted mail, which they'll be more interested in.

Oh, I forgot to say what I did today (still not sure if anyone cares )

    - Cold called a bunch (I don't feel like looking up the exact number) businesses.
    - Followed up on people who wanted followed up on from previous days
    - wrote my script for my sales video and setup my lighting for it
    - got stood up on a meeting... . The guy seems kinda forgetful though so I think I can reel him in still if I keep trying.

I got way busy lately and no one here reminded me to post . Anyways, some stats:

Ive done some more calling and mailing. One thing I've learned is not to call roofers in the winter.... its a waste of time. If all they do is roofing, then most of the take time off unless there is a damaging storm. So I got a couple "call me again in the spring", but mostly no one answering.

      New client #1
On monday, I had 2 meetings though. The first meeting was with a guy that owns 3 local franchises, makes 5 mil (estimating) between the 3 so he was a good lead. He is going to do PPC managment ($1200 upfront and $500 a month, my price is way to loo for this) right away. Within a month we will be doing a new website for ~$2500, then start SEO+Local+Reputaion for about $1300 per month.

So from that one client I'm looking at $20k+ for the year!!!

      New client #2
I also got another client. We are basically going to trade services initially. He will redo my fireplace (oak cabinets, bookcases, stack stone, etc...) and I'll do a website+a little seo/local. So this is probably a $2.5k to $5k deal (which will cost me much less than that).

Not as big as the client above, but he does almost half a mill per year so I will get more out of him than just a trade. He will probably end up being a good client.

      As for the postcard
I have 2 people interested, a cabinet guy and a mechanic. I have a "maybe" from a dentist (who owns 3 dental places here in town).

I also have a guy who I might partner with to sell these. He is more comfortable w/ walking selling and will do better.

    Hey mate,

I had subscribed to this thread long time ago and was checking in. Congrats on your success!

Can you share how you got the clients? Did you cold call/direct mail? What cold calling pitch do you find best? Any details about prospecting would be appreciated.

    Wish you all the best!

You said $4000 a month is not a lot - crikey if I was getting that I'd be over the moon - that amount of money is a lot so you must already be making some if you think that's not much. Very good luck though and I hope it works.

How do you see who has used Groupon?
