Creating an LLC and Billing US Clients When You're Overseas

Hi Warriors,

I'm currently starting to build websites for US clients, but I'm travelling overseas. I'm a US citizen and wanted to know how any of you go about billing your clients in the US if you don't have a US bank account or a current US address.

The same goes for creating an LLC for yourself, how did you go about it? Everywhere I go, it seems like I need a US address in order to set up everything.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

MVF

I cannot speak on the overseas part - do you have an address of a family member you can use for the US?

I used rocket lawyer, waived the $99 filing fee by joining their membership site for a free trial, then cancelled the free trial prior to having to pay. So they did all of the filing for what it would have cost me to do it : $110

I received my cert in the mail a couple of weeks later.

Right after I filed, I went to the IRS site and filed for my EIN.

    I hope this helps.

      Ryan and Lori,

Thank you both for your answers. You've both pointed me in the right direction and I'm following up on it.

Does anyone have any info on the best way to go about setting reoccurring billing for your clients?

      Cheers,

      M

Paypal has a recurring payment, pretty much most online merchants do, the problem is not all clients will want to do it that way, they want to be billed every month.

So I have paypal/fresh books, with freshbooks, I can just send the e-mail for the invoice (it can be set up to send automatically) and they can mail the check and I will go in and show it paid on my end, or they can use paypal.

"You are out of country and don't have a US Bank Account or Address" sounds more like you are residing out of country.

You might opt for an off shore merchant account. Discount Fees would be around 5% but it might resolve your issue without the large upfront expense of creating a whole new business entity.

            Hypetext,

Thanks for the info. Yeah, been traveling overseas for over 3 years and closed all US accounts. I'll look into opening an off shore merchant account.

            Thanks again,

            M

    Hello MVF.

For an LLC, you need a US address for your LLC - you personally don't need a physical address in the US. You do not have to live in the US to form an LLC.

Find a registered agent who offers a full package service, including an office/physical address. A knowledgeable agent can also assist you with the IRS employer ID number, etc. Full service also includes mail forwarding. Your agent will forward your LLC mail to you anywhere in the world.

There are many services online that include registered agent as part of the package. Just google it and compare the different services. Possibly even set up a virtual office.

    Hey Warriors,

A little research goes a long way. I found these guys here at the WF, they're a one stop shop for both creating an LLC and collecting payments from US clients.

    NewCenturyMarkets.com - What We Do

Has anyone worked with them or heard anything positive\negative about their experience?

    Thanks to all!

Unless you are bringing in massive checks [over $9999] I would also vote for the setup the Ryan mentioned. Freshbooks and PayPal should be able to handle all but the biggest clients.
