Adwords, can competitors click your ad multiple times?

I was wondering, when you put an ad, can a competitor click your ad multiple time till it reach your daily limit so you dissapear for the entire day afterward?

That just hit me like a truck as I see my ads lately getting clicked on early in the morning but I dont get much calls from the clicks... I used to get a better call per click ratio.

edit: I know it would probably not work from the same IP I think it would not be much of a problem getting some proxies up for this.

Yes they could do it but most probably not, google has a very keen eye on this crap and have an auto rebate system for you if they catch anyone.

If you suspect false clicks report tit to google but more than likley you have one or more of the following happening

you are using random braod serach terms and or your plugged into a content network as well. more than likley if you tidy some braod keys up to phrase or exact and reign in where your ads are shown you should eliminate those dud clicks

you can aslo set your adwords to only run during the hours you want from your campaign cp, this may also help.

Thanks tryinhere, makes a lot of sense.

Aren't keywords in Adwords set to exact match already?

tryinhere is incorrect in saying yes. I really hate it when people respond to questions with their 'gut feeling' or using misinformation.

The answer is no technically. Clicks on the same ad from the same IP are charged a maximum of twice and any more times will not be charged. Many more times and the clicks will be recorded as fraudulent and money refunded.

As for the no 'technically' part, a tech savvy competitor really out to hurt you will click ads once per IP, and change IP using a proxy or otherwise. If they have 100 proxies handy, and they click 4 competitors ads each 100 times, and the ads are worth $3 per click... They've wasted $1200 of competitor advertising right there. That's the danger of PPC!

Matt, you are providing some misinformation here too.

Google's anti click fraud system is far more complex than just checking the IP from which the click originated. They have an automated system in place that looks at MANY factors, including historical bounce rates, user agent, location, prior history (per IP) and much more.

If the system notices anything questionable that is not OBVIOUSLY click fraud (this is then credited back automatically), it is then sent to a dedicated manual review click fraud team who look into it in more detail.

I am an Adwords Certified Partner and spend thousands on Adwords monthly. In all the time I have been doing this there has been one instance where I had to submit a report to get a manual review done.

What is going on here is that your keywords / ads/ LP combinations are most likely not optimized properly.

I have to agree with jasong714.

We are a Google Engage Agency and this question comes up all the time.

Google filters invalid clicks and you can run an Invalid Click Report from within your Adwords Control Panel to get additional Data on what has been filtered.

Also run search query reports. Since google introduced extended broad matches, which tries to match similar keywords to the keywords within your account. The problem is, a lot of these keywords are irrelevant but prospects are still clicking on your ad which is costing you money. I know this is time consuming but run a search query report and make a note of non relevant keywords and add them as negative keywords which will cut costs, eliminate wastage clicks, organise your campaign better and keep it focused.

          Hope this helps,
