present myself as marketing person or as webdesigner?

Starting next week i will be contacting local bussiness to sell them better websites but i dont know how to present myself, if as a marketing person or as webdesigner

how do you guys present yourselves to local business?

    Question is which are you?

    If you are a marketing person what do you offer?

    If all you offer is web design maybe you are just a web designer. And there is nothing wrong with that.

    But this isn't a question we can answer. You have to answer it yourself based on your service mix and how you brand yourself.

    If your sole service is web design, then present yourself as a web designer.

    If web design is one tool in your kit, and you offer many services to market your clients' businesses, then present yourself as a marketing expert.

    You can be both. If you are handling your own clients as well as do the web designing yourself then you can present yourself as a web designer and a marketer at the same time. But if you have a team of designers working for you then you are better off presenting yourself as a marketing person.

    Why do you have choose one or the other? Present yourself as a small business person just like they are, somebody who does a little bit of everything.

      I usually say something like...

      "I own a local creative marketing company that specializes in helping small businesses with their online presence. We do this by building websites, mobile websites, search engine optimization, text message marketing, qr code strategies, online videos, and more."

      This way I can throw in a little bit of everything I do and hopefully one of those services catches the attention of whoever I'm talking to.

    Tell them you are a marketing strategist or marketing technologist and you leverage effective web design with new online marketing channels to improve businesses market positioning.

    Offer one service to get your foot in the door and then if you are providing value and they want more start up selling your other services.

    This is the phone pitch and as well as sales pitch that I use and that msot of the times(7 out of 10 times) works.

    "Hi, I am <<name>> and I am a Social Media Consultant. Before I tell you what I do and the purpose of my call, let me ask you one straight and simple question. Can you handle 5-10 new customers for your <<fit business niche>> every month? If you can, we can go ahead and fix an appointment of just 15 minutes of your time. I will explain you what I can do to bring more customers to your business.

    Would you be interested in spending 15 minutes of your time to improve your revenues? "

    Works like a charm. Try it.

    Here is how I tend to do this....

    I will get them hooked in with the fact I am a web designer because if you look at most business owner's perspectives, they are looking for someone to take care of their website (not a market person). Remember I am saying in their minds. So every nite they go to sleep thinking, "I really need to get my website updated and find someone reliable to do it".

    They are not thinking, man I need someone to market my business. Most think they can do it themselves or all they have to do is call a newspaper to place an ad.

    Now saying that, remember this is just getting your introduction. NOW you can tell they, "Oh, btw, I also am able to get you more customers using super cool advanced marketing techniques that are working for companies such as Apple, Amazon....etc. etc. Then get into the real conversation you know the two of you need to have.

      this will be a one man operation(design for starters), don't have any clients yet.

      i will be contacting them via email only, but i think this can be adapted to email too.

    The first order of the day probably would be to find out if they have a website at all. If they do, then you can ask how much traffic that they have? Knowing some basic information on how they advertise and what there expectations are is important to have.

    Once you get a basic background of that information, you could start suggesting some alternatives methods of advertising by tweaking their existing website or creating a brand new one for them.
