Is your word of mouth marketing trackable?

There is a great book called E-Myth Mastery which talks about you need a system the create predictable results each and every time for most businesses word of mouth advertising is just a bonus.

You need a system that will give you consistent results. Do you have a system to generate referrals for you business?

    Word of mouth I would say is impossible to track. The only way you could establish this would be at the point of sale and how they came to purchase from you.

    For example, I could tell a group of people about a product or service in a conversation and they could tell someone else about it and buy it. There is no way of knowing about this.

    Then I guess the question is how did it turn into word of mouth as this could have been converted from other forms of marketing.

    Word of mouth would only be measurable at the point of sale in my opinion.

      One way to do this is to give your customers a discount if they refer someone to you. For example, if you have a jewelers, you could say to your customers that if they send 5 people to your shop, you will give them a $ discount on their next purchase. The customer just gives their friend a code or tells them to go into the shop and say such and such sent them for a discount or whatever. This way you will know how many customers are coming from word of mouth or from other advertising/marketing.
      Could work for a variety of businesses - hairdressers, carpet cleaners, accountants, garage owners, electricians etc, etc.
