Would you still suggest Hostgator?

I've been using Hostgator for almost 10 years and over that time I can count the number of problems with less than one hand...

In this past month if I was using the same method, I'm already out of fingers and toes. It seems like their customer service/tech support people lost their jobs at the DMV due to lack of smarts!

Have any of you found this to be the case with Hostgator lately? If so, is there another host that you could suggest. Over the years I've recommended Hostgator without the slightest hesitation, because I knew it was one less headache to deal with. Can't say I would do it any longer.

  • Only hiccups with Hostgator that I have experienced have been introduced by....

    ME!

And they helped me get my Wordpress site functional in no time.

Past 30 days? No Hiccups here...

I recommend them for sure, great support in the past.

  • I have a VPS and I haven't had any issues. The only issue I had a few months ago was that the tech support rep took 20 minutes to verify my account even though I gave here the root password and everything!

I finally hung up on her and called back. LOL The next rep was awesome.

Other than that everything has been honky dory.
  • The last time I contacted the help desk was a little over 2 months ago. I didn't have a bit of trouble then.

    • I also have had no problems with Hostgator. But then I don't have a lot of scripts that I have either. Maybe the type of problems you've been experiencing are unique than the rest of us. Sometimes that happens but Hostgator still is good for customer support and pricing for me.

  • Sorry to hear you are having troubles with HG. I have used them for quite some time and still do to this day with no issues I am happy to say.
I also use bluehost.com and godaddy.com but I keep coming back to hostgator as they have proven to be the most reliable in my experience.

    • Thanks to all....looks like this may be a streak of lousy luck as I've made a few changes this past month. However, it seems like every CSR that I've had the misfortune to speak with has been an idiot. Hopefully things will settle in and I'll just hope that I don't continue to get braindead support personnel on the phone.
  • David,

I've had no issues either but that could be because everything is running smoothly. Were there specific problems that arose due to those changes you made? Could be that we've all just been lucky and/or that we might come across the same customer service issues given the same circumstances.

I've tried other providers but have always preferred Hostgator and used them for years now. Hope everything is now running smoothly for you!
  • No problem with Hostgator at all. cPanel, reasonably priced (I have upgraded a couple of times) and great Support. The only thing I didn't like about Hostgator initially was they were not ready to enable mod_deflate / GZip compression (required for speeding up page load time) for Shared Hosting but now the issue has been resolved and mod_deflate and GZip is enabled now. • No problems with HG either.
I had them initially, then switched to a lower priced hoting service that was a WSO.
Terrible service there... Switched back to HG again... No problems this time around either. Anytime I have a problem, the CSR's get it taken care of quickly.
I have no problem recommending Host Gator
  • HG can go good for months [if not years] but in a really bad moments [not sure why] you get probs one after another for days. Then everything goes normal. However, you will have something very similar with any other hosting company. Can not win here.

  • Never had any major issue, but they have "some" issues like anyone else - thing is... they have LESS issues then others
  • I still love me some hostgator but if I had to recommend any other company it would be MDDHosting. Mike runs a tight ship over there and has awesome support. Litespeed powered servers.

    • Perhaps it was a temporary hiccup but the fact is that they DO have some less than knowledgeable tech support and now I just hang up and call back....I was a bit more than annoyed because much is left out of their sales information concerning their VPS offering.

Some of the problems I ran into was because I was told that I would have certain functions, but actually that was not the case at all. I had to go through 6 different support people before I found one who knew how to reassign IP's. Site migration went smoothly for some sites but my sites that were on WP were totally corrupted.

As of now, things are running smoothly, but that has more to do with my own work tracking down headaches and doing my own tech support on those issues that were within my ability. I've heard from a few people that the changeover to a VPS is usually pretty messy.....but than settles down.

My suggestion would be to stick with HostGator. I use Arvixe and HostGator and I can tell you that although HostGator's support isn't that good, Arvixe's is much worse. Plus, I did some things for my friend who has an iPage account and when I was in need of help from their support, they didn't have the slightest clue of what was going on.

Keep HostGator and just make a suggestion that they get better support people.

    • I agree about Arvixe, I've used them as well. In fact I still do although I've moved most of the sites to my VPS at hostgator. I have no intention of renewing my account with them. However, Arvixe does offer very reasonable ASP hosting and I did need that for a couple of sites.
  • I haven't had any problems with HostGator. They have always been amazing when it comes to customer service, adding value, and compatibility with new technologies.
  • I use them and bluehost... never had a problem with either. Both are similiar and both I would recommend.
  • Been such a long time i din see compliment about hostgator while only see other from godaddy, blue host and 1&1.

Most of the time i only see people share about hostgator affiliate and crazy promo especially in Christmas. I think their service would be the best.
  • Knock on wood but....HostGator has been really great!

I have had absolutely no hassles and any issues have been on my own accord...sometimes I get wrapped up in other projects and forget a simple procedure done through the Cpanel.

I've read on other forums how much of a joke HostGator is, but I really don't find that to be true for me. Maybe for larger sites that use crazy amounts of bandwidth?

That, and the cost can't be beat...very reasonable.
  • I've had over 10 hosts, by far, they're the best host out there right now. 24/7 support and I've even submitted coding problems to them and they've fixed my php settings/code for me and literally wrote new code to get scripts working.

    A+ support there.
  • No issues with Hostgator and love their real-time chat support. The only alternative I would recommend is MediaTemple for their grid hosting capability.
  • My friend got a problem with them for the past month but it was solved soon..
  • Using hostgator since few years ago and never had problem with them, however there are many providers if you want some alternative.
  • Still use hostgator. Still great customer service. No issues here.
  • I've been using HostGator for awhile and never had any problems. Customer service has always been A+

    • Same here. And they're only hosting service with 24/7 available support through their chat system. They're still awesome!

  • I recommend them always based on my experiences. I never had any issues with the tech support and moreover they proved to be excellent whenever I raised any ticket.
  • I am currently hosting 4-5 websites with hostgator and I have had no problems with it at all, so I highly recommend it

    • I have never had a problem with them, they have been very helpful with the live chat support. So to answer your question yes I would still suggest them.
  • never had a problem with there customer service
  • As a web host myself, I would recommend HostGator. They're a great company.
  • I have been using Hostgator for about two years now. I have always found their support to be excellent, although I have not had to use their support these past couple of months. In fact their service is so good I rearly use support.

Perhaps this is jus a temporary hiccup. Hope it works out for you.
    Cheers
  • How are they with email support?

Do they answer emails pretty quick?

And... where is their datacenter located at?
    • [1] reply
    • In Texas. And it depends on the severity of the ticket. Live chat is always available as well.
  • I have tried several hosting companies and hostgator has been my favorite so far. They were my first host and the support is fantastic for beginners. I later switched to a few other hosts, but in the end went back to hostgator. I think for the price you cant beat it.
  • I have been with them for a few years and have not had any problems over the past month. I have several types of accounts as well and all is stable.
  • No problem with Hostgator yet... When you see problems, most of the time, it's caused by your ninja moves...

hostgator is really great hosting. i recmonded
  • I think peoples experiences varies a lot.

For me, Hostgator was a total nightmare and I would never recommend it myself, however I do know tonnes of others that have never had an issue
  • I am currently using 6 hosts and they seem to function he same. There are minor differences in service. Most hosts do not support the php scripts. Most of the scripts have a separate support system.
Here are the hosts prices from 4 - 9,
    Ipage
    Green Geeks
    hostgaetor
    godaddy
    lunar pages
    GVO
  • i'm still using hostgator.. its good..i never have to face major issues..
  • I use hostgator reseller hosting and only had problems once which was a bit of downtime (25mins ish) which was a bit of a bummer but still. No other problems here!
  • I have been having quite a bit of downtime with them lately. It is getting rather annoying...
  • Pompano,

    I have too.

One site they disabled because of "abuse of server resources." Everything was cached, but it was getting hit by a lot of crawlers. It wasn't a huge problem to fix and they gave a recommendation. But it took *hours* to get responses to support tickets and it ended up being down for a day and a half.

Then, two days later, another account gets limited. This one is Wordpress MultiSite and I had Statpress on a couple of them, so fine. I deleted it. I also had to disable the native Wordpress cron and set it manually.

But one of the tables they told me to clear out was postmeta. I asked the support tech if they realized that this was a core Wordpress table and his recommendation was to

I was irritated already, but that really sent me over the edge. I asked them if they were going the Godaddy hosting route.

Today, I just discovered two more sites are down. When I first discovered it I got this message.

From what I researched, the current value of 1 limits the account database query to one per hour.

I haven't received a response to my support ticket yet, but I can tell they are jacking with the htaccess files on the sites.

The other thing that just annoys the heck out of me is that in the second support ticket string, the guy basically implied if I had one more "incident" on the account (keep in mind this is a reseller account with multiple sites) that I would be booted.

However, when I asked if they had ever updated the server, which I was told it was scheduled for last June. The guy said no, but that the server didn't have a problem unless it was abused. Which is not what I was told in at least two other support tickets.

. . . and I just got an automated phone call that an account was shut down. Awesome!
  • Well right now all my sites are down saying "Error establishing a database connection". Got on chat with support and they say SQL is down on many servers and they are working on it. I have not had many issues with HG, hopefully events like this are rare.

    update: its fixed.
