Getting Your Foot Through the Door With Offline Clients

Hey guys,

I don't post in this section much, but thought I 'd share a cool little technique which isn't new, but allows you to get your foot through the door of many offline clients.

I originally posted this on my blog, so thought I give you guys the heads up.

Follow These Simple Steps

Step 1

Sign up for Google Alerts and register the keywords of the businesses you want to keep track of, I.e. "mike's pizza house".

Be sure to check that the alert you receive is for your client and not another business with the same name (that could be embarrassing).

Step 2

Sign up and register for a separate Gmail account and set up filters for the different alerts.

Step 3>

Start receiving alerts on the local businesses you're tracking. This could be good information or even a complaint someone has made about them on a forum or group etc.

Step 4

Contact them with the information and explain the services you have to offer when it comes to managing social media, press releases and content creation for their blogs (if they have one).

I regularly receive emails asking how to get new business.

Give this a go and see what sort of response you get.

It's a long term strategy that at least get's you on the clients compass.

Note: If you already have an offline business, you should be doing this for both your client and yourself. You can then react faster than a speeding bullet to any criticism or just to thank a happy client in person. (ahhhhhh, cute).

Hope that helps?

Thanks for that - thats a great idea on the Google alerts for both current and potential clients, you would definately show that you are on the ball.

I am going to go and set some Google alerts right now.

Hey Saras, glad you got something out of that. There are many courses out there that teach theory, however, in the real world you need to position yourself as a helpful old soul first before you start going in for the heavy pitch.

These guys are being pitched to every single day with hoards of offliners using the same simple script (probably purchased on this forum) which business owners can see a mile off.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with scripts. I just think you need to be able to think out of the box to get a business owners attention these days. Their BS radar is working over time!

BTW, let me know if you need help setting up G Alerts. It's fairly straight forward and takes a few seconds to set up

Thanks for the reminder Desmond. I started
to set something like this last year, but took
my eye off the ball, and forgot to go back to
it. I was targeting local niches rather than
businesses, I'll add that to the mix and go
    finish it

    Thanks again

    Glenn

      Glenn, you're welcome buddy!

It's kind of nice for customers too! They feel they're getting excellent customer service when the business owner has replied to a thread or even an honest complaint.

In my business, I find customers complain when they feel they're not being listened to or feel there's no other way to vent their frustrations. By answering their questions, dealing with their issues, you're more than likely going to keep a customer rather than lose one.

They're also more likely to refer and recommend you to friends and family if the experience has been a good one.

The basic and simple techniques are normally the best.

The beauty about this is you're leveraging the power of Google to hand deliver you the comments posted in real time whilst using the Gmail filter system to keep things organised and so you can systematically go through at a time that's convenient.

Great if you're running your business on a part time basis.

This is where KISS earns its keep.

      Keep It Simple {Stupid|Sweetie|Sweetheart|Sexy}

I like simple, less to go wrong and easy to adapt.

    Desmond,
You can use a site ifttt.com that will filter any info from many sites and send to your inbox as well. Might save you setting up multiple gmail accounts.

Richard, you're a star!! Great tip.

I've just signed up now and going through it. The dashboard is pretty slick and it seems really easy to use.

My only worry with these types of sites is what happens when the $$$ run out? Will they still be around?

    Great tip anyway!

Google alerts is great for a ton of ways to generate leads. I also use it to monitor everywhere my clients' may be mentioned online. It's a great way to include links you may not know of that were generated as a result of your work to include in your client reports. (e.g.You put out a press release and it's picked up by some authority sites)

      Totally agree mate.

I think you also come across as a professional with your finger on the pulse to your clients.

You can also set up an Aweber form and put their email address if you have it as one of the recipients that gets notified when some one submits a form.

Then do a Poll about Pizza for example, then every one who does the poll and submits it the business owner your targeting will get notification. LOL
