Monster.com to Hire a Sales Rep

Hello all,

I'm looking to hire a sales rep. I want them to be able to sell, well, anything, but the #1 product I'm looking to have them sell right now is a direct mail advertising program I'm starting. I need them to sell to businesses (mostly small business) in a tight geographical area, with no leads, and the job needs to be a 1099 contract on 100% commission. Obviously, this is a rather stringent set of requirements, but I need someone who fits this, or I'm doing the selling myself. The job can pay up to about $85k maximum in the first year, if they're excellent.

Here's my problem. I'm a start-up, sole proprietor. I don't have an office. I don't have a sales process that I can show them or train them off of. Obviously, I want a qualified salesman, but I can't really see any reason why they would want to work for me beyond the fact that my product is excellent. They could probably make similar money selling for an established business that they KNOW won't fold or be unable to pay them at some point down the line (obviously I can, but they don't know that).

So, I have been unable to find anyone on Craigslist. My next step would be Monster.com, which is expensive. My question is, given the restraints on my position (requirements in the first paragraph, my own appeal as an employer in the second), do I really have any hope of finding a good candidate who would actually want to work for me? Or am I flushing money down the toilet?

Seriously, based on what you said.

IMHO, forget monster. put an add in your local newspaper
hire some one you can meet face to face, and explain, where your at
and where you want to go, and offer them an incentive to take the risk.

( something like, being the sales manager receiving % of all sales peoples sales as you grow )

To find what your looking for, the person you hire will need to trust you
and trust in your abilities. It will be very hard to gain that trust with out
them getting to know you on a personal level.

The only part of your post that I would be willing to speak to is the question of using monster. Having had some experience with them, I would strongly suggest that you save your time and money.

I don't know how monster stacks up in other disciplines, but my experiences (3) with monster and sales was very negative.

I'm sorry but the most seasoned salesperson such as me for example would see working for you a very HIGH risk.

I HIGHLY suggest you go out and start getting your own clients first. This will help you get that sales process down and having some existing clients will help you to attract a seasoned veteran.

Other then that, yes you are flushing your money down the drain.
