Last night I was bored, even though I have projects I can work on, but I was just sitting here and bored. I woke up at 8am, usually saturdays and sundays I try to sleep in as late as I possibly can.

I took my morning piss... drank some orange juice, smoked a cigarette(bad me) and I was just simply bored. I don't normally try to make sales on saturdays. Something more rare than that, I don't target my local area, I do business across the country and always avoid local people because I don't like the hassle.

So what I did.. I broke my rule about local businesses, picked up the phone after busting out the yellow pages that was on my doorstep that I have neglected to bring inside and called a few people. First couple calls, no one answered, I guess they are off on saturdays, who knows? Opened up to a random page and it was a gold buying company. I'm thinking, I never even had a call from one of these types of companies, and I never approached one like it, so why the hell not?

Some lady I had trouble understanding answered the phone. She apparently had difficulties understanding me too, so basically, my pitch came down to, do you need a website that will get you found in the search engines? Of course she does, and she knew it so she said ooo yeessshh i dew.. That is my impression of the accent in text.

After a couple minutes of difficult conversation I just said how about this, I will be at your business in about 45 minutes and we can talk. She was much easier to understand in person.

So I drive, pull up, walk in and introduce myself. We had some small talk then just went into business. She had her husband bring in some food from panera and got me some too, was pretty nice. Anyway, after a small discussion and not even a real presentation I had payment in my hand. I went inside the place, unshaven, tshirt and jeans that had holes in them.. and walked out with full payment up front.

They paid cash... and they asked if I could email a receipt or invoice for their records. I said no worries, busted out my smart phone, opened the squareup app, and had a receipt sent to their cell and email. I could have processed the credit card through the phone but hey, CASH MONEY BABY! You guys need to sign up for squareup, its pretty cool and your clients will think you're amazing.

PS.. The last 7 sales I've made said that they get emails all the time from people wanting to offer these services. I always ask them why they never took up the offer. Most say that if someone wants their business, then they need to call and not send an email. They believe the emails they receive are from people who are not legit, and people who do not have the business experience and competence to get things done. #ColdCallingWorks

EDIT: Since this is an old thread that got brought back up... this client directly brought me an additional $15,000 in sales in the last two months through referrals. The people she referred to me have already started referring others to me... so this one sale potentially is directly and indirectly making me around 50K by itself.

    Wonderful! Note, everyone, how the OP took all the pressure off himself--didn't matter if he made a sale or not. And look what happened!

        Awesome stuff, Hey what i would look at doing if i was you is find a way to monetize this journey of quitting smoking.

        Like, find an amazing quit smoking program with good conversion, then affiliate to it. Get started on the program this monday. Document every step of your journey to quit smoking and when you have quit;

        1. You have an amazing testimonial of this to sell within a review site of the product.

        2. Write a full day by day program on what you did to quit smoking i.e pdf, mp3, mindmaps.... then make your own quit smoking product to sell

        I'm sure you will make a few dollars with the added bonus of having quit the dastardly habit of smoking

          Yeah... its a great idea, but at the same time its not what I want. I just want to quit, damnit! LOL. I didn't really want to do an affiliate or review type thing. I thought about making a basic blog, but how do you even populate it continuously when its a pretty basic subject. I suppose I can tie dieting into it since a major concern of people is gaining weight after quitting smoking.

          Definitely good motivation hearing it from another person. If I can quit, that is monetizing enough!!!! LOL.

    This is why I say go local. Local is a gold mine of people and referrals. Once they see you are a real person and you deliver it is refferal city.

    Great thread.
