Hi Warriors,

I just wanted to share with you guys how I made £4850 ($7500 apx) And £1500 ($2300 apx) recurring monthly in 3 weeks.

I will show you step by step what I have done to get those results very simple:

Step 1: Search for businesses on yellow pages, local news paper, local magazine, you need to look for builders, plumbers, plasters, painters and so on that don't have a website, more on this in a bit.

Step 2: You need to contact then via, email, text or phone call.

Step 3: Close the deal.

Let's talk about step 1.

You need to search for local businesses that don't have a site but they have paid for an ad on yellow pages, local news paper or local magazine, as you probably know those kind of ads are not cheap. If those people paid for the ads chances are they will pay for a site that cost only £97 plus £30 for hosting, domain and 2 yearly update to the site. You need to target builders, plumbers, plasters, painters because it's very lucky that will never ask you for any update on a regular basis, instead if you go for restaurants, cafes and bars those business will ask you to update the site on a regular basis, change of menu, new event and so on, so avoid those.

Step 2: You can contact them via email, phone call or text messages. I have used something on those line:

Hi there (or name if you have),

We are a small web design company based (what ever you are), we create website for local business and we are running and crazy offer (price) limited to 50 orders. You can see a demo site on (yourdemosite url), call me or text me back for further information.

I personally like to text or email them.

Step 3: closing the deal:

You need to make sure that the prospect agree on the £30 monthly payment and sign an agreement to a minimum of 6 - 12 month contract. For the payment I use paypal because lots of people know about it.

This is the simple system I have used for the past 3 weeks.

I create the sites using wordpress, I have 6-7 premium theme for small business, pm for more info. If you don't know how to use wordpress pm and I will send you 20 free training video.

The sites are between 3 and 5 pages max.

To take it to the next level I am going to outsource the sites building and concentrate on getting as much business as I can, to take my earning to £10k monthly.

I hope you find my post helpful and if you need more help post your questions below and I will try to help you guys as much as I can.

Enjoy,
Simon Fusco

UPDATE: Another way you can use to get business is to use tripadviser, what you need to do in this case is to look for restaurants, hotels, b&b that don't have a website and contact them. Always make sure to check if they don't have a website by serching for the name in google.

  • Thanks for your help...I'm looking to get into offline marketing right now and you have given some good ideas.

    • Hi Simon,

What are your "hit rates" on the email you send? ie how many do you send out to get a client?
Do you do keyword research before hand and geo-target the site ie BuilderNorthLondon.co.uk or do you brand it ie BobsBuilders.co.uk.

Is it more to do with providing a basic internet presence that can be used in their other advertising rather than getting a well-ranked lead generation site.

Thank you in advance for your answers and I wish you all the very best in your business..at £1500pm I could give up my regular job ;o)

      Regards,
      Andy
PS I can't PM yet but would be interested to see what themes you use for these small businesses....

  • Well done Simon, going by your figures I'm guessing you've signed up 50 clients. Sweet.

£30 pm recurring is amazing considering 1and1 dot co dot uk charges £4.99 pm for their basic package.

Is your response rate for cold calling higher or lower than text or email?

Thanks for the tip on businesses to target.

    • [1] reply
    • Hi Dayo,

Most of the time I send a text I don't like cold calling.

      Simon
  • Let's see if I got your math right, in just 3 weeks you got 50 clients @ L97 each and L30 monthly recurring. 50 is a pretty phenomenal number, you landed over 16 a week. Did you do this all by yourself or did you have help sending out the over 1000 emails? Please elaborate on how you obtained all the email addys and or phone numbers to contact. That's one helluva job you did, my hat's off to you and a big congrats.

Are you selling them SEO services also? Here on this side of the pond I've seen charges starting from $500 up to $1000 to get their GPlace listing on the first page and $200 to $250 monthly just to maintain that aspect. Hope you're not leaving all that money on the table.
    • [1] reply
    • All done by myself searching and sending text and emails like crazy, I have worked long hours. To build the site take me only 2 hours, I still have 15 left to be complete. The next step will be to outsource the site building.

I get the emails and mobile numbers via yellopages, local magazine, local paper and etc.

The next step will be selling SEO to local business. Remember people that run businesses don't have the time and don't really want to learn about webdesign, marketing, seo and so fort.

Usually (95% of the time) I close the deal over the phone no need to go around businesses. Exceptionally builders, plumbers, painter they are always on the move.

    • I have two questions for you.

      1. What is the order process like? Do you just direct them to a page where they click on the Paypal button and pay/subscribe?

      2. Do you stay with them on the phone while they pay?

Thanks a lot for all the valuable information you have contributed !

    • Best to avoid this route Guardado8, as you'll run into all of the rules and laws surrounding sending "unsolicited spam" via mobile. Could get pretty ugly!

  • Your figures sound OK but surely you have set yourself up for a hell of a lot of work? I trust your figures are correct and you won't be working yourself to the bone to achieve this with a team on board that needs paying?

    Just don't burn yourself out.

  • Simon, great post. I wouldn't mind the info on the themes and How to use WP. I have been playing around with WP but just don't seem to be getting anywhere fast. I seem alright working with Expression but WP is slightly different.

Any help would be greatly received on this.

Fantastic income and considering it is a slow time of year for some of the trades mentioned.

I still don't have enough posts to PM so I am wondering if you can send me the details you mentioned about WP.

I have been looking to see where you hit the Thanks button but can't find it.

    Anyways Thanks.
  • Hi Simon,

Really motivated after reading your post. Great to see that this is working in the UK, I am from Scotland, so wouldn't mind trying this in my local area to see how I get on.

Could you PM me about the WP themes that you use, so I can get a rough idea how the websites look when you've completed them.

    Thanks in advance,

    Marc

  • Really nice tip Marciano... Thanks so much for sharing
  • Hi Simon74, congratulations on such a huge success after just 3 weeks! I've just started cold calling this week offering specific demo sites to small businesses with no website at all. Once I've sent them a link to the site I follow up and try and close the sale. So far I've had 3 requests for demo builds that will be sent out and followed up Monday. It's worth considering sending out an email similar to yours for all the customers I can't get hold of on the phone to increase my hit ratio!

Also great tip about the lawyers Marciano. I've had a look on yell.com and there's quite a few solictors in my area tha don't even have websites!

    • Thanks for the PM Simon. I can't PM you back yet so I'm replying here instead. I'd love to know if anyone in Scotland is applying these types of methods. We're very known to be tight with money up here  So getting people to say yes to an offer may be a little harder, but hey, it's all about letting them know the potential for their business. That example site you have shown me is currently number 1 on Google for that specific keyword and it appears that it's there mainly with just On-page SEO.

Great work Simon and I'm glad I've noticed this topic.

here's some figures for you on my latest deal that i recently closed

£7k upfront for website, link building, hosting etc
£2k per month for link building for 12 months plus % of profits

note-to be able to charge this you do need to know about SEO and be able to set up a proper wordpress site, not just a 3-5 page site

  • Hi Simon just quick question what do you say in your sms when you contact them?
  • Good job,

This is my first post and I am just starting off. How do you offer hosting, do you have your own hosting servers? I don't know anything about hosting but it would be nice to have a recurring income.

I came to the offline thread because I think combining offline marketing with online is the best way to go since you get way more targeted traffic.

  • Hi Simon,

PS I would be very grateful if you could either PM me or email me at markjob1(at)gmail.com the premium themes and the videos?

    Well done!
    • [2] replies
    • Hello Simon,

I would like to get the videos and themes too. Can you pm them to me also?

      Thank you!

I actually started selling sites to small business this week and so far have made $600. Earlier I was selling mobile websites but I wasn't getting the results I wanted out of it. Granted I did sell 8 mobile sites to different kinds of businesses and will definitely still look to be selling these sites, but I just find it easier and it makes more sense to me right now to sell websites as a shoe in to upselling marketing services.

Selling websites and mobile sites is absolutely possible, and the only method I've been able to use with success is by cold calling. Yellowpages is a great source to find businesses. I am here in the US.

On the mobile sites I managed to get two recurring clients, I do SMS marketing and email marketing for one of my clients and he has paid me 200 to 300 dollars every month since October, and so has my restaurant client.

We actually got 13 new clients for my personal training client.

Anyways websites so far is the perfect shoe in service to getting a client to trust you and continue selling services to them. Especially if you manage to get a recurring income from the websites. If you continue to work at it, you will have a long list of clients to upsell too, money coming in every month, and with the money coming in after a few months of hard work and marketing we can scale things up and hire people to do the appointments and sales for you.

      That's my goal.

      Anyways, nice post Simon.
      • [1] reply
    • Yes I do have a site. You need something very simple!
  • Great info looking to try some of these methods..

  • Hi Simon74. Great post! Could you PM the info on the themes? Also could you pm me an example of the contract that you use?

I was wondering how you can charge 30 pounds per month for webhosting while other hosting comapnies are much cheaper?
    • [1] reply
    • I just want to clarify that I charge £30 for hosting, domain and 3 yearly update. But remember that people don't have time (especially traders, like plumbers, painters, builders)

      Simon
  • You can also offer them google maps service
  • Further to my last post, I'm doing my “due diligence” on this, and have a couple of other questions.

You say you close most of the deals over the phone and send the customer a contract to sign, do you e-mail this to them and get them to send it back in the post, or do you post it to them and wait for them to return it? Are there many people who “bail out”at that stage?

Do you take a deposit when you close the deal? Have you had any problems with people not paying after everything has been set up?

I ask because I abandoned a previous offline venture (designing brochures back in the 1990's) because of similar problems.
    • [2] replies
    • i am wondering on this too...what would be in your contract?

look forward to hearing from you...

      thanks

      • [1] reply
    • I do the majority of my business this way (invoicing via email) and have not had problems, but I don't deliver any projects until I get paid. I let them know *I can get started on the project right away, BUT I will not be able to deliver anything until the invoice is paid.*

You can avoid payment hassles by asking them *are you able to access your email right now so I can send the invoice* If their answer is no, you let them know payment is to be made within 24/48 hrs (or how ever long you're willing to wait) but also let them know they won't get the ending result until payment is made. That way, you don't waste your time!

Don't think too much into it. If you call a plumber you can't tell him *I need you to unclog my sink today, but I can't get to the bank until Wednesday, so you'll just have to wait..but thanks for your services anyway* lol They expect to get paid upfront, so should you!

      Hope that helps..
      • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • Hi Guys,

I just wanted to update you about Marciano idea.

I have contacted about 30 Lawyers since yesterday and I close I sell and another 2 will get back to me by the end of the week. I couldn't send text to the prospects because on the yellow pages listing majority of the time (95%) you get only office numbers or email, so I tried the cold calling this time and it worked quite well so far.

Also I got lots of email from you guys asking me if I would consider to do a WSO, the answer is yes of course, I just wanted to ask to the people that are interested how much would you pay for a tep by step guide?

Keep you posted on the progress.

LOVE what your doing and I'm glad it's working for you. There really are so many opportunities out there for people like us and it really does take just doing it.

I have one question. Why are you selling your websites for such a little price? £97 to me sounds cheap. I'll give a better explanation on what I mean...

    There's two watches. (A) is priced £99 and (B) is priced £399.

Would you rather have (A) or (B)?

The fact you went for (B) shows that you, like the rest of us have a recognition of value. Both of the watches were only worth £99. But you paid £399 because your mind told you that it held more value and therefore was the better option.

Seriously, up your prices. Not to sound harsh, but I've actually made business from clients that have bought a £99 website by simply upping the price and influencing them (through the concept of value) to be my clients. They also pay £75-100 a month for SEO services and social media. I also offer Facebook advertising campaign setups and a few more extras if they need them. I charge £30 for any updates that need doing and I do very well.

I urge you to read the book "Influence". It will literally change your life, I promise.

Good luck dude, you're an inspiration to the people.

Myself being from India Should I also follow the same method as you have,Please suggest me on this.
  • Hi simon, that are some nice numbers!
Congrats on the succes. i have a couple of questions though.

What WP themes are you using to set this up? and how do you get the info to place on the site?
  • Man...i wish people would read the psots...he said £199 not £9 not £99, not £999 but £199

It would be great to see which themese he uses though but no reply......so I guess he's given as much info. as he's willing to share.

    Thanks any way.
    • [2] replies
    • No he didn't. He said £97 upfront and £30 recurring.

      He has 50 customers.

      50 x £97 = £4850
      50 x £30 = £1500 recurring.

Spot those figures anywhere? For example the title of the thread.

      Dan
    • if you are talking of the builders sites he actually said £97 if you were reading the posts
  • did he make some changes because i read £199 and he actually said that equals about $299 .....

£99..man that's cheap. How much proft can you make from that?
  • Nice, some good figures there.

Have you thought of up-selling then another service, there are plenty out there that businesses need if they want a good web presence in their local area like:

    SEO
    Google+
    Google Places
    Mobile Site

I'm pretty sure all of these can be outsources aswell, you could try following up your customers with a postcard or phone call saying something like "as a special offer to new customers we are offering SEO at half price..."

If they're happy with your past work they'll probably accept an upgraded offer so long as you sell it to them properly and show them how valuable your services are.
  • I just wanted to come back and thanks one more time Simon for this great system. I took action after reading the post and speaking with Simon many times over the system and he was really helpful, he could have asked for $100's easily for all the helped he gave me. I have reached around 30 clients and growing weekly.

Thank you again for all your help, god bless you

One last question which I hope you can help me with being from the UK yourself. Where do you find your info for people with no site? I've been on yell.com and thats great for showing me who has no site, but it doesn't give me any email addresses, only phone numbers. I will have to have a look in the book as well as the site I suppose.

Do you have a method for automating it, or do you just spend time looking at the yell site and the book?

    Thanks

I got it ranked and never finished it. I still may try & sell it if anyone's interested but just in case is there any chance you could send me those business themes please.

  • Really inspiring post! It's actually what I am trying to get going as well. I am just picking a niche right now and building the list and will get on the phones later this week.

I have a couple of local business themes but am curious to know which ones have been working for you. I saw someone else ask you and you told them to PM you.

If you can give me some insight as to what themes work with local businesses it would be much appreciated.

    Keep up the great work!

P.S - My post count is not high enough to PM you, so if you can PM me the info it would be awesome. Thanks
  • Hi Simon,

    Many thanks for your pm

I have a couple of questions if you wouldnt mind answering them?

Are you building these test sites on exact match domains prior to selling them?
I suppose if you built plumberslondon.co.uk then your leverage is smaller as you can only contact london plumbers? Could you give me more of an idea of how u do this without going too much into specifics?

If you were targeting plumbers first would you build the test site then target plumbers then move on to the next trade?

Do you sell the same site to multiple plumbers using the same test site?

I have a hostnine reseller account but I presume hostgator have a better affiliate program

Purchased your wso the other day, some really good stuff in there mate

Look forward to your response mate when you get the time.

  • Hi Simon, this is really great.. Could you also send me some details on the themes and emails. Thank you
  • Also Do you use the yellowpages website?
  • Hi again Simon.

I thought I'd update you with my progress having implemented your methods today. I wondered if either you or imwarrior84 who have both had success with this could give me further advice, perhaps by email as I cannot PM.

I've built my list and today decided to send off 100 texts to start. Its not the largest sample but I was eager to make a start! I went for the handyman type niche, so plumbers, electricians, etc. Tomorrow I plan to up that to 2-300. I sent it in the same format as the one you mentioned in your first post.

Unfortunately I only received one response from the 100, who called me back. I was quite nervous, and he seemed to really know his stuff, which threw me off guard a little bit, as I am new to all this, and have no experience in sales! The guy will go away and look at my site, he wanted to see a portfolio, but at this point I don't have one, and he will let me know by the end of the week if he is interested. I have a site which I built for my business, which I am pleased with, but was curious about the sites you were using, and if you had a large portfolio to show potential clients?

I may have been going by stereotype, but I wasn't expecting the person on the line to know about HTML/Wordpress, servers etc. Is this common, or are they usually less knowledgable? What methods do you use to convert those that are showing an interest into an actual sale?

Also what sort of response rate do you get? I had only a 1% call back rate. Of the people who get in touch with you, the warm leads, what sort of % of these do you convert?

Overall I am pretty pleased with how today went, I took action which is the main thing. Having read around on this forum, the customer I am looking for is someone who is actively interested in buying a site, and 1% of my contacts fitted this category, though this was with too small of a sample to make any real conclusions.

My goal tomorrow is to send out alot more texts, and hopefully have the opportunity to speak to more decision makers, so hopefully I can build my confidence and composure when making the sale, as I felt I was a little too nervous, although I didn't do awfully. But the main goal is to close a sale. This will give me the capital and confidence to invest in a proper set up (good headset and autodialler) to make calls.

    Sorry about all the questions!!

    • Hi denis,

I have followed Simon system and got great results, but also I have implemented my own strategy. You need to try different things out because maybe in your area or city people react differently. I also go around newsagents, coffe shop any where where I find business cards without a website. I don't just text people but I call them aswell. If they don't reply to your text give them a call and you will be suppried on how many actually take the offer on.

Gays give Simon system/strategy a go because it works.

      Best of luck

  • A quick update at the end of day 2 of texting local businesses. A futher 300 texts today, to add to the 100 sent yesterday.

I have still yet to receive a single text response, but today I had a call to add to the one I had yesterday. But still no sales

I have followed the exact methods you outlined in your first post, I have taken phone numbers from local noticeboards, from my local yellow page books as well as a couple of online directories and have been spreading my texts across numbers collected in each of these forms.

Whilst I can see that this method will get you clients if I keep persisting I am unsure as to how you were getting a sale every 20-25 approaches. Given those numbers you would have between 16 and 20 clients whilst I have zero. I don't doubt you, I am just unsure what I am doing wrong! I'm not even getting a warm lead every 20-25 approaches, let alone a sale, it is so far one in every 200 messages for a response to my message!

Has anyone else gained any success with this method that could perhaps give me some pointers?
  • Simon
Great job and many congrats to you! I'm now getting into marketing (have always had an interest in it but never honed it into a focus). Your approach is similar to what I though to of doing just never saw anyone who actually did it. So thanks for posting as it's helped me tremendously. Would you mind sending the themes, video and sample site to me as well? I would truly appreciate that. I can't seem to PM yet so would appreciate it you can send to socialextreme (at) yahoo.

    Thanks again!
  • Bit of a typo there I assume :p

Thanks for your response. You said you gained great result by using Simons methods, does that mean when you started it you used his method exactly before tailoring to make it your own? It is my intention to start cold calling asap, I have built a list, I just want to make a single sale to build my confidence and so I can reinvest the revenue into a set up suitable for cold calling.

I am getting a little disheartened, I am following the method exactly as mentioned. I am now 600 texts in and not a single sale. Today I contacted a further 200 businesses, all without a website, and didn't have a single response! So 600 texts, 0 sales and 2 warm leads. Simon said he was making a sale every 20-25. Either his numbers were wrong or he was doing something in addition to what he mentioned in his post, or I am doing something wrong. I think I have sent enough texts out to eliminate any sort of statistical anomoly now.

As I mentioned before, I still have faith that using this method you can make sales. I have had two calls back, and will be getting back in contact with them both on Monday, where I will hopefully get that first sale. So to any newbies reading this I would still recommend giving it a crack, its a low budget set up and therefore low risk, however I would perhaps revise your expectations. When I started, I thought the figures were quite high, therefore was aiming for a 0.5% sale rate from my contacts, which is 10 times lower than Simons highest figures. I haven't even achieved this.

I will keep going, and keep reporting how I'm doing for anyone who is interested, and who knows maybe Monday will be my breakthrough day!

    • Hi Dennis797,

As Imwarrior84 said in every area or places you will get different results so you need to understand your prospects. Are you showing them a sample site? If they don't reply to your text call them. What I am trying to say is to don't give up or feel down because at your first try you only got 2 reply.

      Simon
  • hey simon thanks for the thread..could you PM me the Themes..Thanks
  • brilliant - very simple but effective strategy!!
  • Hi Simon , I am interested in knowing how you going about making them sign a contract dont they start running the minute you want to "bind" them to a contract? Also do you email it to them or is there some other way of doing this?

Also when it is time to pay, do you just give them your paypal or what?
    • [1] reply
    • After we agreed to get the job done I send them a contract to sign and they pay via paypal.
  • Great story, i would like to do something like that in the Netherlands.
Can you send me your wordpress tutorial video's and the wordpress premium themes.

    bawo.sambo @ gmail.com or orishae @ live.nl
  • Hi Simon,

Thanks for the response. In the text I have sent I have been sending a link to my website. Can you tell me what sort of % rate you got for sales just from a text where the customer called you back? I will have to start calling the numbers on the list I created as hopefully this will generate more success for me. It is possible that different areas give you different success rates, but I am covering all the major cities in the Midlands and still haven't had any luck from texting alone!

A little update on todays efforts, first thing in the morning, I decided to call the second warm lead again, as I realise I had played things a little wrong. She is interested, I offered to make her a mock up home page and if she likes I will continue and complete the site. I also think the money upfront may be an issue, but she was happy to pay a higher monthly fee on top of the hosting costs. Whilst not ideal I'm thinking I have to start somewhere and getting some sort of payment will do my confidence good.

I then continued my texting, sending around 200 more today. No call backs, but I had some text responses for the first time! No leads but I was expecting simple 'No thanks' texts fairly frequently, but my first 700 or so texts I didn't get one person doing that. One person was nice and wished me good luck but said they had just bought a site.

One person responded 'STOP' believing it was some sort of automated texting service which I found interesting. One of the reasons I think so few people have took my bait is just that reason. I've played around with about 3 different versions of the text I'm sending, but was always concerned it looked like some spammy automated text service, no matter how personal I tried to come across. This might have cost me several sales from interested people.

The next step for me is to start cold calling I think. I think my problem with texts is that I don't really know if I'm getting a 'no' or they are just ignoring the text, but with cold calling I at least get to hear their answer and then move onto the next. I appreciate you posting this method still, and I'm grateful that it got me to take action which I'm sure will eventually pay off for me!

All the best with your methods in the future and I'd very much like to hear an update of where you're at now as you mentioned you had a plan in place to expand?
  • Hi Simon,

  • Just a heads up. Are you aware that you are breaking the law by sending unsolicited SMS to sole traders such as these? You need to have consent or it's considered spam and the fine can be anything up to £5000

It's ok to send unsolicited SMS to limited companies but you will find most tradesmen are 'sole traders' here in this country.

Here's an article that covers it.

Email and SMS marketing - staying on the right side of the law | Startups

You may well get away with it but be careful advising others to do the same.

This also covers Email as well.

    • I never advised anyone to do anything, we all are adult we need to do our own risk assessment and research. I get promotional messages all the time from companies via text ( I am talking about big companies) so I am sure that there is a loophole some where as always. But like everything in life you need to do your own research before taking any actions.

That's realistic if your conversion is high, because that would only be about 60 emails a day (if working 7 days a week) which is about 7 per hour (if 8 hours a day). Not unachievable. The thing I would ask is how the heck did you find 1250 contractors without a website in one city? That's incredible.

  • Hey Simon, great idea! Will try this out and report back in a week.

Can you PM an example site you have done just so I have an understanding of the type of quality you are providing?

Also, £30 per month for hosting seems like quite a lot. Maybe you would get better conversions if it was less?

Also, with reseller hosting, can you set custom prices. So did you decide to set it as £30 when you could have set it as £5?

I actually just finished building a website for a guy I met through work and he had a friend who was interested too. So I imagine you might get some work through that way too. Maybe like a "refer a friend to receive £5 off" or something.

    Thanks again!

My team and I have hired a full time VA - Lead Generator, to do most of the prospecting, that is followed by my 2 partners qualifying the leads and I give the follow up call and close the deal. so far we were able to close 2 customers from a list of 50! needless to say many of them were very interested mainly because of the price but were not comfortable with making a decision today.
I do have to ask you, what do you include in the simple website?
Could you please send me an example of such site? thank you very much!

    Cheers!

Thanks for the response! Those templates look good. I have a few of my own I think I could put to use too.

I have got the yellow pages and Thompson local and will start contacting people.

Do you find you spend a long time getting details from the client etc?

Do you have many people say they don't like the design?

    Thanks Simon

    • Hi,

More time you spent more prospects you find, it's really up to you. In regards to the theme I use ready made one because I am not a designer and so far I never had any problems. The one I use are very easy to use and to change if you need to do that.

  • I believe another good idea for this business model would be offering same services you find on yellow pages, but deal with "plumbers,...etc.." for commissions of every brought client. So you bring them clients via your website, they pay you commission, this way it is possible to earn even more from one deal as if you take 10% commission, and the builder or plumber work costs $1000, you will get the whole $100 just for redirecting client. Well, thats just a thought
    • [1] reply
    • Could be done for sure but this is something different!
  • Please PM me some examples.

  • Excellent read Simon, I have always been capable of making extremely professional looking websites, but I've focused on making them for myself and seo.

I dabbled with this idea a while back, but re-reading it here has made me realise that this is exactly what I should focus on completely for the next month or so.

My only question is, and I hope you can be truthful, after you sell 30, to say a number, and you get recurring fees from all 30 - How long before they want to cancel the website? I see this is a real problem, as surely they will realise it doesn't benefit them that much, as the only people who will see their amazing website are people who already deal with them, as they will not be ranking for anything.

And what other issues have arisen from your clients? As unfortunately nothing is ever set-and-forget.

    Thanks for a great share.

  • Hi Simon!

Thank you so much for such an inspirational post. This was the reason that I joined this forum...

I only have one question which I cannot get answer anywhere. If you outsource the work, how can you offer a website at 97 pounds?

I contacted many outsorucing web-designer companies and the prices are extremely high. Some of them wanted $350 for just two pages with template. How can you find people who would work for you and you still make a profit?

I know that I can sell a lot of websites at low price, but I cannot build them by myself. I am kinda stuck.

Since this is my firs post ever, I think that you cannot PM-me. If you can send me any info at: omega.pet(a)gmail.com I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you so much once again!

  • Hey Simon,

Thank you for the quality blueprint. I know that when you write threads, they will be of high standard. I like your approach of providing businesses with a long term solution and the reoccurring monthly income. The pricing point is affordable for businesses advertising in the papers.

I just have some queries as I'm interested in this method:

    1) How much could you sell those business premium themes for businesses to us?

    2) How much could a newbie like myself realistically make per month?

    3) Could I host like 50 of these sites on my baby hostgator plan?

    4) Could you please send me details of an outsourcing company that is reasonable priced?

Thanks Simon for giving back, especially to newbies who are struggling.

  • Hi Simon,

Thanks for the thread, its really inspiring. I am thinking of doing something similar but with my own take on it. Was wondering if it is possible if you could send me the links and the wordpress tutorial videos please?

    Thanks,

  • This sounds like a great earner. I'm totally new to all this and am looking for something to do in my spare time and this sounds like a winner.

I have never used word press before so was wondering if you could send me the vids you have or if anyone can help me with how to use it I would be thankful.

I have a friend that fund a computer repair shop and we'd site design so I might not even need to know how to use it if I can have him involved in making the sites then I will just collect the 30 quid hosting each month.

Like I said this is all new to me and I'm here to learn so if you can help With info please do.

Thanks for the wonderful sharing. There are so many professional and elegant themes for local business. Add 5-6 pages simple content with those themes, it should be very easy and profitable.

The big hurtle is how many clients you can get. The more you reach, the more you get, the more money you make.

Simon, I will be grateful if you would share the demo site too.

    Thanks.

  • Well, I'll be damned. Someone linked me to this thread because they were surprised to see my old business model being done by someone else.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't very surprised and I'm glad someone else is doing it. Works great.

Edit #2: I'm new here and apparently this business model is discussed again and again here, so please forgive me if what I'm saying isn't new.

I did this about 4 years ago throughout University. Here are some notes on the business:

Edit: come to think about it, this was 6-7 years ago. Time flies.

    - Your conversion rate will be much better if you stop cold-calling/texting. These are seen as spammy solicitations. I used to physically walk into business and talk to owners. Bring a portfolio printed on glossy paper. Dress well. Wear cologne. Since my WP sites were so similar, my portfolio would include 1 site from every niche I dealt with. My conversion rate was around 20%.
    - I actually focused on businesses that wanted frequent update. Charge them $14.99 per update and have a template they must follow. One flower shop would ask for updates 2-3 times a month. Yummy.
    - Have packages. One cheap package ($149), and one expensive package ($399). You can throw all sorts of neat stuff in the expensive package, like a performance report (essentially a copy of a google analytics report).
    - Recurring charges are awesome. Offer 6 months free hosting with the expensive package.
    - Get a dedicated server (NOT A VPS) and host on it. You'll get super fast load times which you can use to your advantage.
    - Use these lines:
"Did you know that 75% of people go to the internet before the phone book?"
"Did you know that most people leave a site if it's not loaded after 3 seconds?"
    - Snatch up some good domain names. If you're targeting laborers, for example: anaheimplumbers.com, anaheimcarpenters.com, etc.etc. You can then leverage the power of #1 rank in google, if you achieve it. Not only that, if and when someone drops you, the site isn't completely lost and you can just sell it to someone else, with the added benefit of having an aged domain.
    - Focus on making pretty sites. Looks sell. In my portfolio, I ALWAYS included sites that had a big item at the top reading "place order online". This plants a seed in the owner.

If you could PM me the wordpress themes you're using, that would be neat. I'm not in this business anymore but was very successful in the past. Lots of work. If I were to redo it, I would outsource EVERYTHING besides client contact. Hope that helps.

  • Hi Noah Fleming,

Thanks for your reply. But you do sound a bit harsh though Could you please elaborate on what you said?

How do I build a relationship with a prospect? Is it through an appointment?

In my quote I do mention the benefits of SEO and how it can increase their business enquiries. I do mention all the work that we do and what results the client can expect.

What do you think is a good conversion ratio for cold calls?
1 sale for every 100 calls?

Please do guide me as I am quite new to this and also if you can please try not to sound harsh!
  • Thats incredibly smart mate!!!!

    Cheers!!!
  • My only concern is, if you're doing all this through a reseller account what if something unexpected happens and the sites go down? They can't go to the primary hosting company, they have to go through you.
  • Simon 74, that is amazing how you did that and that is a great teaching experience, so that we can take ACTION!!

  • Thanks for your help
  • Just wanted to say thank you for the excellent advice, and for spurring me to get moving on something I had been thinking about jumping into for a few years now. Just signed my first client tonight, AND he prepaid $2,400 for the year. The only kicker was I had to provide him with an SLA and an expectation of managed services ( mainly availability and uptime, but otherwise nothing too in depth) luckily I have the right skill set and am comfortable with providing him a guarantee. Highly recommend anyone out there consider the OP's angle and use it, or switch it up a bit to fit your pitch.

  • How do you contact these leads initially? Do you call them or email them? How many people do you mail daily? How many businesses do you contact on an average before you get 1 response from these businesses?
    • [1] reply
    • you need to research your market because in every places people respond differently!
  • This is awesome! I have done this exact thing in a different market - don't over think it - don't find reasons why it won't work - take a leap of faith and run with it! I used this same method to build a passive income of over $2800 that pays for my kids to go to college.

Don't over think it just go and do!

ps people wont kill you, eat you, and steal your family if you cold call. It gets super easy after the first few. If you can't do it hire a mate to do it and split the residual.

Thanks for sharing that to us.

But, is it easy to contact those kinds of on-call workers?

I think it still needs a lot of effort if not money.

    However, it's worth trying though.

You have the point there in helping those people who don't want to spend a lot of money for advertising in yellow pages.

  • Thanks for the tip on Yellow Pages. I can't think of a bigger waste of money for clients than online Yellow Page ads. It would be nice to put their money to something of real value like a website.

And to the people that are surprised by selling hosting for $30 when a client can get it for $5 from 1and1 or Hostgator, it's easy. I do it all the time. Most clients don't even consider other hosting because I am their trusted web guy. You should be too. If they do ask why you cost more, it's because you keep their site up to date (wordpress always has updates) and you provide automated backups, etc. Make the list as long as you want. Sell.

    • You are correct this system work well!
  • Excellent method and very inspiring.. It does require quite an amount of consistent manual labour though, no? Especially if they require constant maintenance and updates..
  • Will do!

And not a problem, always nice to help the cause.
    • [1] reply
    • The reason you experienced those results is because the OP is lying to create hype so he can sell a WSO.

Anyone with experience selling to small businesses and contractors can spot this one a mile away.

  • I'm doing something similar but I'm charging £69 a YEAR in order to compete with other web designers. I've been building an Excel database since last year and I'm targeting the exact same type of client as yourself.

I'm going to branch out a little to neighbouring towns etc.

Do you have any tips for sending emails/texts? Do you use a bulk SMS service or use an email list manager?
  • And you're having good success with that Darren? How many sites do you make a week say?
    • [1] reply
    • Hardly any! Even offering a low price seems like such hard work in my town. I can of course look furthur afield and I think I will begin using more templates to get the sites created faster. I am relatively new to website design and have done things the hard way so far, but it has helped improve my skills.

But seriously, I would be luck to get one site a month, never mind thinking on a weekly basis. I'm getting there, and I am getting a few referrals come in. Web design is not the only thing I do and even some of the websites I have designed for previous clients have ended up useless because the business has gone under!

This is why I am reluctant to labour over a site, to get it looking unique etc. But how do templates fulfill this? They all basically look the same and people want something reasonably unique for their money.

I'm adding to the contacts database for cold calling, and it's worked a little, but it seems no where near as effective as visiting premises and chatting to people directly.

I don't have many clients but the ones I do are loyal - apart from the ones who have disappeared because their business has collapsed. I do not want to work with bad business people but it's hard to figure out who will still be around in a year and who will not.
  • i just made an update on the system warriors, check it out!
  • Nice example of targeting businesses existing in the digital divide.

Commoditization of a design/digital service is a great idea if you like selling - if you like building, get someone else to do the selling for you. If you like to sell, outsource the building.

    Thanks for sharing the insight
  • This pitch is getting you a 4-5% close rate? I would assume that means you get a significantly higher percent to respond, unless you close everyone you speak to; if you close 1/2 of those that respond, it would mean you needed 8-10% to respond to an unsolicited email.

This simply isn't happening with unsolicited email. I didn't read your whole thread, but I skimmed the first and last page, and noticed a ton of kudos, but I can only assume it's because there are so many newbies in here.

Perhaps they are completely unfamiliar with email marketing, and want to be told it's easy, and are attracted to the idea of doing nothing more than a cold email blast to 100 people to get 4 clients. They are in for a rude awakening if they try this.

Sorry, but for cold emails this scenario falls into the "wishful thinking" category if the pitch was stellar, and this pitch does not give a single benefit or compelling reason to respond. And it's about you, not them.

Subject lines have a big effect on open rates, but if they didn't opt in, even the best subject line (which you ignored in your post, as if any old one would get these magical results), will not get 4%, let alone 8-10% response. More likely south of 1%. It's cold email for pity's sake.

Your story would be inspiring if it was believable. Unfortunately, it is just inspiring people to embark on perhaps the most labor intensive, low response prospecting possible. They will not be getting clients for every 20-25 emails sent, by simply announcing they build websites and do "crazy deals".

Why not do something for the prospect first; then make a warm call to tell them what you've done? Instead of being an annoying addition to their already cluttered inbox, you could be a welcome helper who surprised them with a favor out of the blue.

Then you woo them a little; don't even ask for a sale on the first call, let alone a cold email. The reason lists are so powerful is that they establish a relationship, starting with a nice favor, and not asking for any sale until there is some goodwill established.

You have to grease the wheels before trying to "mount" the prospect. It's like dating; guys that walk up to women and start humping their leg like a dog don't do as well as guys that show some interest in the person before trying to close the deal.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm saying that when you cold email saying "we do this and have crazy deals...blah blah", you're acting like a leg humper; it's a huge turnoff.

We all know what happens to unsolicited emails, so let's not pretend they work like gangbusters. Do something that sets you apart from all that crap.

    • You have raised some really valid points here. Getting clients is not as easy as the OP makes it sound. He obviously is misleading people with such threads. If his claims were really true, he would have provided more updates on his progress in answer to the doubts of many people here.

Unfortunately, many people are gullible and would easily believe such stories and take them as inspiration only to see their dreams shattered in just a few days or weeks.

  • Really good post Simon,

A couple of years ago, I was doing sites around £300 ex-VAT upfront with £90 pa ex-VAT. The sites were wordpress and used pagelines pro as the theme, taking about 1-2hrs to build, maximum of 8 pages with some discretion on occasion. It's clear that you have a better business model there with the recurring income, but you maybe able to up your price point on the front as Michael suggests.

  • Fine concept, Simon,
I like that this system of yours uses the yellow pages ads for finding potential web site design prospects. I can see one needs to follow the steps outlined and take action until one closes the deal to build the site for the prospect.

Many of the Warriors both new and experienced could have a go at this if they have the web site building experience. Continued good luck with this project.

  • Hi,

I went through this and it really impress me the approach. But I stay in India I tried to implement this here in India but I did not get much response. Above all here in India there isn't any option to get the monthly payment like in Paypal.

I would however like to implement this for business owners and prospects out side India, will there be good response? I mean do I get clients for this?

Also Simon can you please PM me the details as you did for all others?

  • Once you have clients paying you money that's just the
    beginning.

You can go back to those clients with offers of other services
designed to bring them in more sales and profits.

    Possibilities of services include:

    # Email marketing
    # Marketing with online video
    # Social media marketing
    # SEO
    # Reputation marketing
    # The list goes on...

and you don't need to deliver these services yourself.

This forum is full of people with plenty of experience who
will happily give you half their fee if you bring them in a
    paying client.

The relationship you already have with your paying clients
is an incredibly valuable asset if you're putting in the time
and effort to really look after them.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

    • Hi Simon, could you address my questions below? Thank you so much

I have two questions for you.

      1. What is the order process like? Do you just direct them to a page where they click on the Paypal button and pay/subscribe?

      2. Do you stay with them on the phone while they pay?

Thanks a lot for all the valuable information you have contributed !
  • Hi there, I know you get asked this constantly, but id really appreciate if you could PM me the themes you are using and any other details. It would be very very much appreciated.

    Look forward to your reply
  • Also I have a few quick questions, and id love it if you could answer them, if that's possible

On your original post it said you were selling sites for 100 pounds each, and that you made 4850 in three weeks.

Would i be right in saying that you therefore sold 49-50 sites in three weeks?
    as (100 x 50 = £5000)

If so, that is one hell of a work rate....it puts it at 16 sales a week.....
    as (50 / 3 = 16.6)

If I have the above correct....im assuming you very rarely if ever actually set up meetings to close sales...? as that would take too much time....

What was the method you used most. Calling, emailing or text messaging?

And how did you get the owners to trust you enough to give you payment without ever meeting you...

Sorry about the detailed questions, but it would be amazing to get a little insight into how you achieved such incredible success

Look forward to your reply on this also

    1. First off, hats off to Simon. Not only has he put a valuable (though I would say common sense) concept into a thread, but he has also ensure to help EVERY SINGLE ONE of the posters who has asked him for assistance!

    2. Boo to the naysayers - Simon is NOT selling a magic pill, and has NOT made promises to boost you income by 1000% that many of the phony WSO's claim. ALL he has done is to give his report on a system that has worked well for HIM. Of course, other's results WILL vary

    3. To the people who haven't gotten much success - change things up. Change up your script, your target market, or quite simply HOW you approach people. It is a system, and you have to tweak it to suit your individual needs.

  • Hi Simon,

I must say you have some special knowledge and skill because of which you get more clients.

I have read through this and had requested you for more information whch I got from you. I live in India, I thought to try this to offer local clients here in India. But I could not get litterally any success. I have sent mails to about 25 local clients but none of them have replied.

I am not sure if I could try this targettig other country, I need to check. You have told here that you have targetted 3 different countries, is that you have affiliates or resellers or you are dealing directly? I feel it would be more difficult to target either US or UK or other international market from India. I am not sure if could try this.

Also, what was your response rate I mean how many emails you were sendin in a day and how much response you were getting? I tried every possible step but when I not even single reply I thought I may not get much success with this.

Your valuable feedback and inputs and others comment would be greatly appreciated.
