Why can't I rank my main page?

Hi,
I hope this is in the correct area.

Is it common for a website to have its inner pages ranked higher than the main page?
When I use a keyword or build any kind of link, I mainly point them to the homepage, however, it's one or two other pages that always appear higher up in Google?
Is this something to do with my homepage not being strong enough in SEO terms, or something else maybe?

Best

Chris

This happens a lot when you have your main keyword in the domain.

    Example:
    www.yourdomainname.com/your-keyword-here

Usually your other pages will rank higher at first because of the keyword being in the URL. You don't want to name other pages on your site, the same as the keywords you're targeting on the home page.

Do you have the website link you can show so we can take a look? Make sure you also optimize the home page, Title tag, h1, h2, alt images, and keep your eye on the keyword density.

There is no rule of thumb but generally the page which has better on page optimization & more targeted back links - gets better rank.

There are many other factors involved so, there is no perfect answer.

I think it is quite possible to hqppen. It depends on your link building strqtegy. If you post a lot of blog comments for instance, in dofollow blogs, then you link to your latest article and not your main page.
Try to create links from the other pages of your website to your main page so that the PR goes back to your main page.

    Hey,

Though Google directs towards inner-pages more but it must not happen that your main page is not ranking with the main keyword. The main reason recently stated by Google through Matt Cutts is that if your main page doesn't have content (readable and meaningful as per search you want to rank for) then it won't list them. As per your site which I think is the one appearing in your signature the first front section that appears as soon as it opens has less content to read and understand and this is being seeing by 30% of the users who will be directed to your site. I would suggest you change it by adding more content that would be informative as per the keyword you want to be ranked for.

Thanks for this, I will definately add some more content. I just wanted a clean and easy front page. I didn't want to overload clients with too much info, but I'll give it a go.

      Cheers

No no no... content is not the problem here. People always come back and say content but that isn't the case. Know why major retailers rank for thousands of keywords on a home page with only images and flash? Because of back links. LOL.

I just went to your website, and to be absolutely honest with you, it is AWFUL. The colors.. well whatever, you guys in this niche always seem to go with a baby poop green or brown because it "relaxes" people. I don't get that, and don't think that is the case, LOL.

Colors aside, because I don't think that is what is going to cost you clients.... I think it is the horrendously long pile of information you have on the home page. Get rid of it. WAAAAY too much.

The people that want you to have 1,000 words, are just inexperienced and believe everything they're told. Your home page has probably about 1150 words or so.

You could probably increase your density a little bit and move up a few spots.

After a few searches, it appears to me that your home page is ranking for hypnotherapy chesire, as well as hypnotherapist warrington. What keywords are ranking for other pages and not the home page? Might be because your title tag on the home page is way too long and not getting full credit for all the keywords in it.

      Thanks for the reply.
      I love your honesty
People do tend to like the site and colors but I think I know what you mean.
      My main keywords are
      hypnotherapy in Warrington
      hypnosis warrington
      hypnotherapist warrington
      hypnotherapy cheshire
      stop smoking hypnotherapy warrington
      weight loss warrington

My pages did rank but my idiotic web hosting company took my site down for 5 days and if anyone clicked on my site it directed to theirs!!! when I did an seo report on my page, it came back with all of their kewords and descriptions!!
After the 5 days my site had completel vanished off the radar, it's been a total nightmare and they took no responsibility for it

The page that always ranked on page one was the
      /hypnotherapist-warrington.html page
      for the keywords
      hypnotherapy warrington, and
      Hypnosis warrington

All the blogs I do and comments and forum profiles all point toward the home page, so I am bemused a little by it all to be honest.

The only redeeming fact is that I am position A on places.

I'll take the content away a wee bit. I'd rather have a nice clean page (despite the green)

      cheers

      Chris

I agree with there being a ton of content on the main page.
Each of my pages has no more than 200 words on it.
Enough content to count for SEO, as well as an image, and a video also optimized.

However, why do you want people to go to your main/home page?

I would make all of your treatments, on their own pages.
Then try to get each page to rank for its own search terms.
On these pages have two call to actions:
    1. Contact Us
    2. Learn more (Goes to your external site)
When someone is searching for help with depression, they want to know about how they can get help with depression. Not about you.
This way too.... You can rank your inner pages, and your other sites allowing you to capture more positions on the first page for your keywords.

You need to be marketing how your services solve their specific problem(s). Not you.

    Hope that helps.

Personally, your home page comes up before others. However I'm not searching from the UK either.

Here's a few tips. Why do you have so much yellow to green gradient space above the fold? get rid of it because it serves no purpose.

oops!!!! now I see that you have some kind of flash in that space. It seems it took forever to load. I am guessing you lose customers having it.

Where is your call to action for those that want to take action to improve themselves? Intrigue those people browsing your site to become your clients and show them how to do it.

I can see many people finding your site. However, they likely look around a little and leave because they don't know what to do.

The 'Call to action' suggestions are great. I will look at doing this today. And create a seperate page for each treatment which will hopefully help improve the content of the site too.
I think, because it's a sensitive area in which I work, I was being too gentle in my approach. perhaps I should be addressing it in a more business like manner.

    Thanks

    Hi Chris,

If you are already ranking then it won't be an issue of authority or "strength" as you put it it but rather, "RELEVANCE".

The pages on your site discussing certain keywords will be more relevant TO THAT KEYWORD.

If you have named your urls correctly and optimised your meta descriptions to look like an advert rather than keyword stuffed - you should actually get better click through rates.

What is the best way to use keyword density?
I hear a lot about this but how do you make the content look good if you are using the keywords over and over? Is there an ideal density?

Are title tags different to page titles? Would I be right in thinking that they should all be different, including the descriptions?

Sorry if I sound a bit thick, but this forum is great at helping out non internet marketers

You should test your key word. Over 5000 competition and under 10000 competition.
This gap can fix your website with higher ranking.

A lot of it has to do with what content is on the pages. If your homepage doesn't have a lot of optimized content on it but your inner pages do, then it can be expected that they will rank higher than your homepage. Sometimes though, for a few days to a few weeks after your site gets indexed, it does the "Google dance" where your rankings will fluctuate rapidly and sometimes odd things will happen like your privacy policy will outrank your homepage for a day, etc. Hope this helps and best of luck!

To rank your page you have to generate the Backlink for that page. So that the domain name for which you have generate the backlink can include that page. If you can generate the backlink on that page URL rather then directly domain name then you can rank you page.

  • Write an article submit that to the article directories, put your links at the bottom where the author stuff goes, join a forum that is simular to your niche and post one to two times a day. Make sure your page is optimized. There is a ton you can do.

Yes it is common, it depends on the back links. You may be getting traffic and back links on your inner pages, that's why their PR is increasing.
