Google Places Listing Out of Control

Is it just me or is Google Places acting beyond weird?

Example - I got a new client listed on the first page, then the pictures disappeared (which I understand is a glitch), then the listing was duplicated (supposedly another glitch), and then the listing's reviews disappeared and moved over to an old GP listing (an old address we're working on claiming), and now all Google Places listings are gone when even doing a search for their keyphrase (city + keyword OR keyword + city).

Is anyone else noticing that Google Places listings are not even showing up at all when they definitely were beforehand, and they rightly should be showing up when doing an obvious geo-targeted search?

Thanks in advance!

This is why I'd never build my business around another company's whims (i.e. Focusing an entire business around ranking companies in Google Places)

Scary stuff indeed...especially if a company just dropped thousands on a marketing plan only to have the service be changed/dropped the next month.

I hear ya, Dexx. That's why I hedged my bets and got his video ranked on the first page, which will hold over client frustration until Google hopefully gets their act together soon.

I am based in Europe and still see Google Places listings when I search for "Keyword + City". But in the last days/weeks, the number of Google Places listings that show up on page 1 has decreased for me as well

Google Places appears to have had another big import of data - old listings have been resurrected all over Austin. One address that had been claimed and deleted is now back for a client, and even mine got resurrected.

Yea...some wierd stuff going on. In a lot of the Chicago suburbs, Realtor places are being pulled. If a Place reads John Dow Remax for example...it's gone. I also am noticing some new formatting.

That is scary stuff! I normally use FB or GP as door busters to get them in my funnel.

I totally agree with Dexx only put clients money into services that you have control over. I was lucky and never got hit, but I've seen so many horror stories!

    • There are major changes afoot with Google Places and often when there is a big update, lots of thinks can go wonky for awhile.

Note: The link above to the "do not support location" post is wrong or gone.
We sure had a lot of freaked out people at the forum to take care of.
But Google took care of that error within the day.

The changes being worked on right now are designed to fix things and make them work better in the long run. Be patient. They are working on it. Stay tuned to the Places forum and my blog for news, coming soon.

So far, 2 of my clients have had their CID changed, so we thought the listings had been deleted and had a heart attack until we found them, and their CID had been changed.

Have to go with Dexx on this one. He's right "To Avoid That Helpless Feeling!"
(And also makes you look like you don't know what you're doing.)

Yeah I've been having listing jumping all around. It's a little frustrating and I wouldn't recommend building an entire business on it, but it's a GREAT service to offer business owners.

There are over 50 million Google place listings in the world and only 4 million of them are claimed. Talk about a marketing with room to grow.

I'm glad to hear it is not just me thinking google has gone insane in Google Places. One client was in second place. We were starting to work on the process to get him into first place when the first place listing disappeared and was replaced by someone not even in the business.

The kicker was the location of the new listing was shown several miles offshore in the ocean.

Mindboggling is all I can say.

Hey Marvin, yeah it's the big G doing their much feared Google dance and shaking up the SERPs and scaring our clients.

Going along with Dexx and others who provide other complementary services beyond GP-Local-SEO ...

I have had a lot of success ranking geo-targeted videos in record time, usually 2 to 4 weeks on average, and as long as the video is professional the traffic and conversions are usually there.

Same thing happened to me for one of my clients. the listing is still down today.

On one of my listings, Google changed the phone number? I cannot change it back and it's a tracking number where I get paid per call. Really pissing me off!

Has anyone seen this happening with UK or Non US listings? Was thinking of offering this as a service to my clients, but maybe that's a bad idea.

I haven't noticed anything wrong with Google Places yet, because I haven't used it much. I was working on getting verified to get listed though.
