Why is it...

A man wakes up after sleeping

under an ADVERTISED blanket

on an ADVERTISED mattress

and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas

bathes in an ADVERTISED shower

shaves with an ADVERTISED razor

brushes his teeth with ADVERTISED toothpaste

washes with ADVERTISED soap

puts on ADVERTISED clothes

drinks a cup of ADVERTISED coffee

drives to work in an ADVERTISED car

and then refuses to ADVERTISE his own business believing it doesn't work?

Later if the business is failing he ADVERTISES it for Sale?

Why is IT?

Found that quote in my church bulletin, lol.

I've met some ignorant business owners in my time!

  • To quote Michael E. Gerber:

"The typical small business owner is only 10 percent Entrepreneur, 20 percent Manager, and 70 percent Technician."

The Technician is the doer. He's always working IN his business and not ON it.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I didnt understand this.After sometime i will concentrate here.Thank you.
  • Once it's made it's gotta be sold and that's where the advertising kicks in.

Advertising is marketing and that's what we do, isn't it?

Take good care of those that you love.

    • Usually it's because he's done some advertising and hasn't seen any results from it.

If you're a direct response marketer...someone who focuses on bringing in real sales from any marketing you do...then many businesses will get excited about that because it's a world apart from the usual advertising agency talking about "branding" and "image".

They just want to make more money than they spend on their marketing.

It ain't rocket science and if you can do that for them they will love you for it.

      Kindest regards,

  • "In business, nothing happens 'till someone sells something." anon...

  • Because he doesn't care about advertising or marketing. He cares about more customers and making money.

As easy as it is for us to say "well you need to do this things to get more customers and money" they don't care. They run a business that most likely doesn't have anything to do with marketing so they don't see the value. We as marketing professionals need to show them how they will get more customers and make more money by doing the things we suggest.

They don't care if you work your magic and get them listing #1 on Google places or in the regular search results. They just want to know how that will turn into sales for them.

Once you can explain this comfortably to business owners you will see a drastic change in your closing rate.

  • I love this thread, the OP is great, piss taking but great, and so so true over here in the UK too!

Many business owners do NOT believe enough in the things they are selling, ie their own business, they just do NOT believe in it enough, or themselves.

Dominoes, Starbucks, they believed in their products and services, what their business stands for enough to market the hell out of themselves, isnt it funny how big theyve become and how 'unquiet' they are about promoting themselves (even back in the day when they were smaller) , thing is said business owners then can not (or refuse to) see the relation between them and Dominoes as Dominoes is now 'too big to compare to our situation' , yes thats because they didnt sit on their arses whinging and disbelieving .

Great retort in the last post, 'what auction?' .................... OK
  • Hey Rambo, I'd be willing to bet that if you wenr back in for Dinner, you could close him. Seriously. That was an emotionaly charged conversation and I'd bet he's been thinking about it.

Go back in there, offer a discount, and give him a chance to "prove you wrong".

His ego may be big enough to just at a chance to prove you're a scum bag. In the end, when sales are up, he'll forget about his ego. He'll love you.

    Reverse psychology.

I closed one like that once - a pizza place - for an ad in a mailer we run.
  • Nice Quote.... Very Impressive
  • Said it before, and I will say it again...

The Average Business Owner knows enough about Advertising & Marketing to enable them to shoot themselves in the foot!

In fact...Most don't even know the Difference between Advertising & Marketing!

    Case in point...

I have a friend here who owns a large wholesale to the public Bath & Kitchen Fixture Outlet.

He came to me wanting Marketing advice...so I gave it to him.

He loved it and wanted to implement my suggestions. In fact, since he is a friend...I was going to do it at a deep discount.

So he says to me...get with my wife and she will handle payment.

So, I go to the wife...and she thinks they should do Radio Advertising and even though he doesnt agree she cuts a $26,000 check to the local radio station for a 6 month contract.

They swear they didnt get one Customer from the Radio Ads.

Worst part is that now he wants me to extend him Credit for my Services because he no longer has the money to pay me up front. I told him I'd consider it with 50% deposit and they dont even have the money for that.

Funny how Hindsight is ALWAYS better than Foresight.

Sadly my Fee would have been a 1/3 of the Radio Stations and would have had measurable results.

    C'est la vie!
