I was doing some research for a Statewide directory here in NY. Using SEO quake I checked the baclinks etc on the top spots. Many of these sites have little or no baclinks showing. Also - when I hit the diagnose button many have x's for meta, h1 - h2 - h3 tags etc? Some do have a few backlinks and one or two have 100+ but still show bad for the diagnostic button. Am I on to something here? Seems like they would be pretty easy to overtake.
Or does SEO quake just not show the right story?

Without know what the actual links were to have a look personally it is impossible to say. HOWEVER, there are many sites in non competitive situations that would be easy to knock out of top spot. But then again, how will you make any revenue? The reason there is little to no competition is probably do to lack of business!

    IMHO

I thought about that but this is a pretty popular activity I am looking at. There are plenty of sites but maybe and under looked niche to explore is what I am thinking. Just trying to figure out if I am onto something here.

Trying to figure out why some POS site ranks #1 is an exercise in futility. Google does what it does and you can follow all the rules to the letter and find yourself sandboxed.

Best thing to do is just play by the rules, build as good a site as you can, get some legitimate backlinks with sensible anchor text, keep the site fresh and it will get where it needs to be. It just never happens soon enough.

    Google ranks pages, not sites.

Check the top level domain for their backlink count, as that count is funneling to their interior page strength.

The page backlinks for a specific business' page might have been zero, in which case, yeah, it might be easier than if they had some, but realistically, the level of backlinks on the page is going to be less important than the overall relevance of the entire website compared to the SEO of the main site, the main site's backlink numbers, and the size, age, etc of the site.

However, not to say you can't outrank those individual pages.

You also need to check the backlinks to the backlinks.
