Hey guys,

They're bringing the Facebook timelines to fan pages in one month, it will be a mandatory change.

What do you think of this?

I think it blows....and it's going to piss off a TON of business owners & web developers/designers offering these services as a nice bread & butter add-on. I created probably 10 custom welcome pages for clients and it was such a great "extra" they came to love. Some folks REALLY got creative with animated SWF files and all types of cool interactivity.

My favorite page was for Gerber Gear (the official survival/cutlery set sponsored by Bear Grylles and also made a grand appearance on the Walking Dead show on AMC). It was pure badass!

Anyways, the only option I see now...is to offer custom banner design for the top of each timeline page. Not the end of the world....but a VERY stupid idea that they seriously need to re-consider at Facebook headquarters. Hopefully they just use the new timeline feature as a testing period and restore the old FBML tabs once they hear from all the pissed off business & fan pages!

Thanks for the information. I have a temporary Fanpage set up and have recently been talking to IT specialists, graphic designers etc. to get it more professionally set up. Now I might just wait until it's clear what Facebook's intentions are!

It looks more like a blog now. Facebook apps are cluttered and the pages were never beautiful anyway. Maybe now they will be.

Hi, i like the design of the cover photo that FB suggested but what i hate is they have this rules:

Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not contain:
    • Price or purchase information, such as "40% off" or "Download it at our website"
    • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page's About section
    • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
    • Calls to action, such as "Get it now" or "Tell your friends"
Read more about this rules at: https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=276329115767498

They really don't want people to promote their websites or products directly. It's like just having a word or picture that describe our website without mentioning it on the cover photo.

You will see alot of people utilizing the ability to "pin" a post to the top of your page for 7 days at a time for some promoting, I suspect.

Using graphics to ask for the "Like" and such in that post will become the norm going forward.

        Actually, I don't think it's a bad thing.

You can still have like to reveal, just not as a default landing tab. You can direct traffic to specific tabs, and yes, they do want you to spend money on ads, but then again, why not, most business pages should run ads I believe - it's a great way to get targeted likes.

But the thing I like is that it forces companies to really engage on Facebook, which will winnow out a lot of competition as most people won't be bothered. It will require better content and a more creative approach. The companies who pull a finger out and work it will benefit, which is how it should be.

Also, I really like how you can easily highlight your best content, which don't forget, can contain strong call to actions. I think video will be very powerful here - think how much traffic YouTube can drive...

Sure, I thought at first that the changes sucked, but I'll do some testing and see how it pans out. I think on balance the new version will be better all round.

yes, i have "pin" mine too. They don't allowed posting "please like my page" or something like that. It's just that you use your banner of your website for the cover image.

So what the purpose of the Fan page if you cannot connect it to your fans?

Hi Rally, well you can connect with your fans but using the "about me" page that should be under the profile image. You can't directly have something on the Cover Image to pursue anyone to like your fans as before. Example: "like us to get a free ebook" or "Go to wwx.example.com to get a discount". It's just like having your website banner on the Cover Image.

Actually you can preview your fanpage to Timeline version but you can see an example of the new Facebook Timeline here too: https://www.facebook.com/about/pages/

These changes are all about the money. Facebook is making this change because they want more business owners spend advertising dollars with them.

So, if I understand correct, the new timeline feature will be a mandatory requirement for business fanpages as well? I wasnt aware of that. Will there be a workaround to other "tabs" so users can be directed to the clients fanpage, or will that not be an option.

Hello Allustrious, i am not sure if it's a mandatory for Business Fanpages but you should read the Business account link below for more info. You can add up to 5 to 7 tabs that will consist of Photos, Likes, Events, Notes, Videos and iFrame tab. I changed my Fanpage to Timeline version, it have an iFrame tab before so it automatically been added on the new Timeline tab. i use 247Grad tab and it's really an awesome iFrame! No coding needed, just add picture and link so that anyone will be directed to the link when they click on the image.

Free 247GRAD tabs can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/247GRAD?sk=app_102455683186165
