My new favorite place to land clients...

Seems as though every time I'm at a poker tournament there's TONS of business owners there and they all have TONS of business owner friends.

We were at a $40 tournament at a local room just killing time the other morning before a meeting, and I was at the table chatting with one of my employees who got seated near me. I mentioned to him:

"We have to get that new project going this afternoon if we want to launch it by next week..."

And two or three business owners immediately perked up. They glanced over and one of them asked me what I do for a living.

I told him, "Web design, search engine optimization, things like that. Our business helps your business, do you have a website?" He told me he didn't.

By the time I left, I had handed out seven business cards, received all their phone numbers, called them, and set up four meetings by 5 PM that day.

Sold two websites the next day, got a second meeting with the other two this week.

Long story short: Find places where business owners are, and make conversation!

It's kind of a like a relationship for me - people love it when relationships start out of chance, or like in the movies when you bump into your soulmate in the pouring rate outside a bus stop (exaggeration), and I think business owners might like that too. It's like finding treasure.

Anyway, just thought it was a cool story. Clerget out...

Makes sense...there you are at an event where you'll meet people with similar world views, outlook.

Easy to build rapport: you've got your topic (poker) right there in front of you.

Smart. Go where the decision makers are, and find something that makes it easy to build rapport.

Yeah and it's funny because I used to be semi-professional for a long time when I was younger... and when I started this business it never really crossed my mind that I had such a huge asset at my disposal with everyone I knew.

And they're almost pre-qualified as buyers, because if they're willing to gamble money, they're probably willing to spend it on services with real value

I love playing poker, haven't played in months. This is perfect example of just "talking" to people.

A lot of the business owners that are "whales" were easy to clean up on the cash/no limit tables.

Now, I can just clean up in another way!

I've had a lot of luck there too, I randomly got partnered up with a financial advisor for a big VC fund once, and we were able to work out some website work for them.

I love the term "whales" too haha, but yeah, business owners are normally the best and most fun to have at the table, I can agree with that.

Yeah, I too realize the real reason now.

So does that make the poker loosing a write-off? I'd have to get a LOT of business for this to work. :-)

Haha according to my accountant, if I talk business at the table, I can write it off - as long as profits are put back into the business when there's a win.

      Seems fair to me.

I've done a lot of design work for online poker players coaching websites. I actually have a large thread dedicated to me on a big poker forum.

There's a few online heads up guys I know that are only 19-21 and are winning/losing $100,000+ per month, it's absolutely insane.

I guess my point is that a lot of these guys do have money to burn, and often will spend it on things they think can make them some more money.

The key take away from this is being at places where business owners are.

It doesn't matter if its at a poker table, the golf course, or the local bar. If that's where business owners and decision makers are, that's where you need to be.

I probably know them then. I have very close connections with that industry and some of the higher ups. Was at a point involved at a couple of the sites, as well.

Want to talk to you about some graphics stuff, going to PM you Bob
