to all directmailers out there...

how frequently in a month period do you send your mail? are you consistent?
same mail repetition or different copy?
what is generally the 'best day' to send mail to prospects?

thx...

The basic consensus, as I understand it, is this:
Hand address the envelope to the business owner.
    Use first class mail.
Send out 50 of one copy, wait one week and make follow up calls to each business that doesn't respond.
If those 50 failed, use what you learned in your follow up calls to tweak the letter and send out another 50.
    Repeat until success.
The day of the week doesn't matter because paper doesn't evaporate over the weekend.
Most mail that doesn't look like junk will get opened - usually by the person it's addressed to if it is hand written.
Don't overcomplicate things or be deceptive in the way you mail - lumpy mail, dollar bills at the top of the letter, fake Fedex envelopes, etc. do nothing much but cost extra and make you look cheesy - business owners are salespeople themselves and the vast majority aren't swayed by cheap tricks.

I know this post thread is over a month old, but I wanted to say thanks @NowMadam for thier reply. In my very humble opinion, I see too many people promoting the use of flashy techniques and even scare tactics when trying to land business clients. I tried this one time and the person replied asking me how I can expect them to trust me when I use scare tactics? It really opened my eyes.

You might be able to get away with using scare tactics and unusual mailing techniques that have nothing to do with your message if you're dealing with end-users. But business owners are usually more savvy and no-nonsense. You want a long term relationship with them because that's how you make the majority of your money. Therefore, respect the business owners, give them a reason to trust you, and you'll gain their business for life.

When dealing with business owners, I think there's still a place for some of the flashy tactics you find on online landing pages, but tone it waaaaaaay down and give those people the respect they deserve.

I like to send it out on Mondays and Tuesdays.

And yellow letter works wonders. I come from a real estate background where I send letters to preforeclosure properties and to people who are desperate to sell so my direct mail had to be top notch.

Other than yellow letters there are plenty of direct mails that work. Try to make it personal as possible because people throw away their emails even before they open it when it looks spammy.

And I use to send at the most 500 letters a day to little as ZERO a day. And make sure to send another one every 2-4 weeks with a different message. If you're not sending them a mail at least 3-4 times, it's not worth your time and energy.

KEEP TESTING!!! instead of asking, you should keep testing until you find a system that works best for you.

I can see what MoneyPuppet has to say, but I disagree but I'm sure my way aint the only way either. Just try to test much as possible. You might even find a better campaign than MoenyPuppet or me.

GOOD LUCK AND TAKE MASSIVE ACTION! =D

send postcards and you don't have to worry about getting a high 'open rate' because postcards get 100% exposure.

send as many as you can possibly afford, and make sure you're sending at least 3 times to the same people. repetition and volume are important to make direct mail work. definitely include as compelling of an offer as you can create.

I agree with bob ross that using postcards is best and it will also help to keep your costs down.

Also it's best to mail your postcards on Monday, so that your prospects get them on Thursday in most cases which is good because most people get paid on Friday, so your conversion rate will be better.

    I wish you much success,

    Martin

Starting from next week, I will be sending 50 letters per day. I've also learnt that to close sales, position yourself as a solution provider who want to solve their problem which they may not be aware of.

I like to mail less with no choice of day but generally avoid weekend. Post card is much effective. Sending more than one gives good result most of the time.
