What's best to build a website?

Hello again warriors,

I've read many posts in the last 2 days but can't really find the answer to my question.

Why are some people using Wordpress instead of using your hosting company's templates? Is there something that I'm missing?

Is it because what you create from Wordpress is yours, so if you leave your hosting company you keep your website? I'm just trying to see the advantages to using Wordpress (totally new for me).

Appreciate your time!

Well, first not all hosting companies offer templates for websites. But with WordPress you are able to create customized websites that have a ton of plugins for dynamic features. Plus the backend admin area is fairly easy for non-techie people to update content.

WordPress is really a powerful content management system these days and with all the plugins available and premium themes, there is really no limit to the type of website you can create.

As you can tell, I love WordPress and wouldn't use anything else.

I'm still mostly old school but with PHP/CSS/HTML but if I need a site to rank fast and may use a lot of plug-ins, wp is hard to beat and yes it is transportable.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

I started old school myself as a web developer, but once I discovered WordPress about 5 years ago I was changed forever.

It just makes your life so so so much easier. I still design my own themes in photoshop and build them custom with html and css and then integrate into WordPress.

But having a website that is all .html or .php pages just is so inefficient for me these days when WordPress can handle everything in the database.

Basically it is for 2 major reasons...

Reason #1- WordPress is amazingly flexible... With all of the different plugins & theme options- you can literally build any possible combination of websites or pages with a single installation. You can use WordPress for squeeze pages, static sites, membership sites, intranets, blogs, directories, portal sites, sales funnels, product launches, and much much more...

Reason #2- Google loves WordPress... That's it in a nutshell...

    Hope that helps...

If you have problems with your Hosting Company at one point you can always move your Word Press site to another Hosting Company.

That's what I figured. But if I use their own template I would not be able to move it...

I have tried different systems but left everything behind last year and go with Wordpress. It's easy to use and powerfull for seo rankings.
I use backup creator to backup my sites and to be able to change hosting company if there's a problem.
    So WordPress: cool stuff

If you are completely new to building websites and you are looking to put one up quickly I suggest looking at Homestead. It's extremely easy to use because of it's drag and drop functionality. They keep adding more and more to it too which shows they are looking to improve what they currently have.

The sites are not out of this world, but once you get pretty good with it you can build a pretty nice one in a short amount of time. I started out using Homestead, but since switch to WP for a lot of the reasons stated here.

    Hope that helped!

      Hi Sean,

Yes I am a newbie (pretty much) to building websites.
I had a website built through Vistaprint for one venture, for fun really... Not sure what the feedback will be about Vistaprint around here

I was seriously thinking of hiring a web design student to do my pages so that my energy would be focused on the sales & marketing side of my business. Sometimes you have to let some things go...

The main reason from the point of view of doing sites for other people.....is the updating of site content. With Wordpress your clients can now go and update stuff and run a blog on their site. e.g. No longer do they have to pay a webmaster just to change a page because they have a new product.

HTML/CSS for me. Screw Wordpress--don't believe the hype WP is NOT point and click easy to customize--at least that's been my experience--however limited--I think you have to actually know some or a lot of CSS as well to tackle some WP themes--unless I've missed something.

Some people shout use WP just because others keep shouting it too... don't believe what you read--even from me--test the 2 options and make a decision yourself.

Edit: I only dabble in CSS a little. I am so old school I can only be 100% comfortable with HTML for now, and if anything gets too tough I have some proteges I can always ask to do a project for me. I just love messing with codes sometimes and I tweak CSS where I can and leave the ones I don't yet fully understand... I did not feel this level of comfort with WP. Just my 2 cents.

If you're deciding between server based website building tools and wordpress, then go to wordpress, it offers more flexibility.

If you're deciding WHICH CMS to go with, chances are most of the cheerleaders will say wordpress because that is all they know but it is the least flexible and robust CMS out of Joomla and Drupal. If it is ecommerce, use Magento.

It might be a good idea to find someone to do sites for you, or partner with them. A college kid might work, or a designer who needs more work and doesn't want to market (which is lots of them). The better your sites look the more you will stand out from the competition and you will be more credible.

Wordpress is good if clients want to add content, but it is not as flexible as a regular site. There are things you can easily do with html/css that suck to do in Wordpress. But the Wordpress plugins are pretty nice...
