Much appreciated - thank you!

      Wow...that seems like a lot of work! They have a lot of content (at first glance) plus a site for professionals with court cases and so much more!! But it does give me some ideas... Thanks John!

        You could do the same without all that. Its only the perception of inexperienced sales people that says you have to have alot to work with. Build perceived value. if your site ranks its just as valuable as findlaws to a prospect no matter how basic it is. If you can communicate that you are golden.

        First you have to quit comparing yourself to others and open your mind to it.

        You can grow as you go with a good sales presentation, you just need to "know your story, and tell it well"...sure some will not do it unless you have a ton of content, but in that case "they arent the ones you are after", you are after the ones who WILL, and trust me they are out there, even if you only have a one page site that sells a basic listing on it that consists of 3 lines of text and a link....

        I dont expect a person to believe this having not made 500,000 dials like I have... but its true just the same.

        I learned this as a young telemarketer from having to sell (on an hourly wage) whatever my boss told me to, even if I didnt believe in it, using the same local leads the company had been beating up for twenty straight years.

        Just like saying "nobody is gonna buy on christmas eve.... Thats BS, they buy just as good as any other day...mothers day...whatever.

        Alot of theory isnt reality, and alot of what you'd think matters doesnt. They are all mental hangups. Just because one person wont do something under given circumstances, another will...

        We have had record breaking days on days that others would swear to you shouldnt work, selling products that others swore wouldnt sell... Its all about the salesman.

        When your boss makes you do it anyway, you find out it can be done.

        I can sell a static homestead site at twice the rate a "consultant crusader" can sell a full blown 2.0 site with all the bells and whistles,and even for twice the price if Im what? "Willing to ask for it".

        Its our mental hang ups that hold us back. Nothing else.

        You see people selling 5 page WP sites for $250.00 while others sell the same quality site for $2,500.00, even using the exact same template theme.

        Its about you and me.

        You could do a google places listing for $100- $200 , or you could do it for $2500, no difference in the quality of work, or the AMOUNT of work, just a difference in the mind of the salesman.

      Awesome. How many months or years did it take for you to reach this stage? Did you spend huge amount of money initially for marketing and to build awareness

        anwar - I believe John was using that as an example of a directory site catering to a specific niche.

      Hey John,

      I enjoyed reading your directory report. I'm new to this so I have questions. I was hoping to see a video of you building a Wordpress Directory. The Wichita site you referenced in the report is by far the cleanest example I have found. Sure there are a lot of templates available but most are cluttered and too busy. Can you replicate a WP directory template similar to the Wichita directory and kick it out to us?

      My other question involves niche directory's. All the directories I have found are general directories which list many niches. Do you think a general directory is still good or should I focus on building a niche directory?

      Thanks John

        I agree, infact its never been easy for me to get listed in Dmoz. So far I've been able to get only 3 sites . But if a website gets listed then there are lots of links you get to your site for free.

    Directory sites place each web site in their database in one or more predefined subject categories following review by a human being.

    A well laid out directory site defines the set of categories so that there seems to be only one natural choice at each level for the topic you are searching for.

    A good search method for directory sites is called "drilling down", where you click as fast as possible on the next subcategory at each level until you get to the one you're interested in. A well designed directory site will make this drilling down natural, since the structure will make it obvious which category to choose next at each level. You can take an indirect method and search the site using the techniques in the search section.

    Some of the major Internet directory sites are listed below:

    Google Directory
    Google Directory Directory
    Open Directory Project *
    Yahoo Directory
    Yahoo Directory Directory
    Galaxy
    The Internet Public Library
    WWW Virtual Library
    Directory sites were originally called WWW Virtual Libraries, so you can also find them by searching for "WWW Virtual Library"

    Yanoff's Internet Services list provides an interesting historical directory site listing.

    Building your own directory, especially while doing offline consulting, can be amazing for residual income and an evergreen business!

    In my small community, we have 4-5 directories, each with tons of listings. More and more being added everyday. In fact, a new one just started and has over 1,000 listings in one month. Pricing model: $48 per year.

    Honestly, if you know how to do decent SEO work, you can get a directory that ranks higher than most of your competitors for the local market. You can establish it as another revenue source, and more importantly, you can help your clients.

    I also agree whole-heartedly with John Durham. What you charge is completely your mindset. This guy that just started is doing $48 per year, others in the same area are doing $50 a month or even as high as $1,500 a month. (PR 1 and 2 sites...)

      I also live in a small community (surrounded by other small communities ) and I believe it would be very successful.

      My directory site would be different though, hopefully bringing in more revenue, but it might be more work than running one site. My idea is the following:

      Build a directory with a focus (ie: nyrestaurants dot com);
      Approach businesses with a high-ranked focused & local directory;
      Main page would list all the businesses;
      Active link would bring the user to a one-page website, where they can post their take-out menu & restaurant menu;

      I can see this in mind, haven't seen anything quite like it yet.
      I spoke to some business owners and they enjoyed the idea of getting a full page for a decent price.

      I was thinking of charging a set-up fee + a monthly hosting/maintenance fee.

      That's my vision, at this point... Thoughts?

    Great thread!

    I am making a local business and events directory for my small town in South Florida.

    I am not doing it to turn a huge profit, I am doing it for the following reasons....

    1. Our city website is just political crap.
    2. There is no good directory in my city for businesses.
    3. There is no way of knowing what local events are going on in our city.
    4. I want to be taken seriously as a web developer and internet marketer for all of my prospects and clients. What is more credible that an extensive directory that I use to convenience my city?

    When people look at the directory they either think "that costs A LOT of money", "that took A LOT of time", or they just think "wow, this is so convenient!".

    Tossing that on my resume/portfolio gives me leverage to increase my prices for my new clients, plus it gives the cheaper clients an avenue of investing into Web Marketing without having to pay for an entire website!

    Good luck!

    In my humble opinion, I believe that there are some key factors when submitting to directory sites.
    - Is it of your niche?
    - Is it a credible source?
    - Do people find this directory from natural searching?
    - Is there a lot of competition in your niche in this directory?
    - Is the directory generating traffic to your site?

    The whole point of all of this is not to increase your rankings, it's to generate business. Personally, I don't care where the business is coming from just as long as it is coming. I do SEO for a living, for small clients as well as a large client that has hired me fill time. I have come to realize that my organic rankings are directly benefited by receiving targeted traffic. I could submit to some random directories all day, but if they are not giving me quality traffic, then they really don't benefit me even if the algorithm says it does.

    I find INCREDIBLE results with guest blogging and guest Tweeting. The viewers and followers already TRUST this source, so in effect they will trust me. Trust is the name of my game. Best of luck to you!

      I think you have miss-understood what this thread is about.

      Its not about submitting to directory sites for SEO purposes for your websites. Its more about how to make your own directory style website for other Businesses to pay you to be listed on your directory.

    I dont know what people think, but I have set up a local directory for my home town, but a mobile directory, so when visitors are coming into town, and if they are searching for somewhere to go on there phones, they have a clear site to look at. any thoughts, Mick.

      I have found my niche, and an exact domain for a hight ticket product, the .com has gone but .net and .org are still available, which would you advise, I was thinking of the .org for a directory site, but thought id ask first.

        While there is no actual "Rule', .ORG is generally supposed to be used for Non Profits, so if you are selling something I wouldnt go .ORG

        .Net simply doesnt carry the same credibility as a .Com. It sort of Reeks of "I couldnt get the domain name I wanted so I settled for this one".

        A Good .Com will make a difference when it comes to conversions.

    What I did was search for "directory" then take the top few directories. Then start posting in those directories. If there is a budget constraint (as quite a few top directories need to pay), I will check the ranking then take the one with the best ranking. The directory search works best especially you have a local niche that you are targeting. The top directory comes out will varies for different region.

    Please take a look at my clone script directory site, let me know what you think, I built it so people can go into one site to look for a php script that is marketed as a "clone" so when developing a new website is not done from scratch any suggestions would be appreciated.
