Making Money From a Local Portal

Hi guys

I've had a website for ages for my local village:

The Wombourne Games 2012 | Wombourne Online

It mainly functions as a blog, how would you use this kind of site to make money?

What's your local readership like? i.e. how much traffic from people within the community?

At the moment, I get about 1000 visitors a month. From search and Facebook traffic.

Ok, that's not a great deal, but it is nicely targeted to the area. My suggestion would be trying to get some local businesses to buy a bit of ad space on the site. It's definitely not going to make you rich but you might make a few bucks with it

If your community has a local "coffee news" type paper, basically those little 1 page news papers that feature businesses along the side and have general interest content that you find for free at restaurants, hair salons etc... you may want to talk to them about what they're getting for rates, you may also want to try and advertise with them yourself to try and build your readership more. If you can position yourself as the go to site in the community and there is room to grow the traffic (possibly you're already maxed out depending on the size of the community) you may be able to do even better with it. Sponsorships, contests, local news etc... you've definitely got a nice start

Maybe offer some genuine reviews of local businesses? Or get readers involved in offering the reviews, the more you can get the public engaged and showing interest the easier it is to approach businesses with a model for getting their advertising dollars.

Thanks for all the advice pdrs. Getting in the local magazine is a great idea.

I'd recycle the traffic that you have......
Put up some other sites and use banner ads to push them to it.
You could do a coupon site for local businesses and a classifieds site for starters.

      WombourneCoupons.com
      WombourneClassifieds.com
      WombourneRealEstate.com

      ...all available
