Cold called my first potential offline customer!

And got my foot in the door within 2 minutes - landed an appointment on Tuesday.

I offered to setup a Facebook page and SEO for their website.

Pretty exciting after reading about IM since late 2008 without taking much action.

There's a wealth of information here on this topic so I'll start on it.

Just wanted to start a thread to tell you all this boy is taking action from today.

Any help/tips will be appreciated!
Wish me luck,
Josh

You got it. There is definitely business to be had if someone will go take it.

That's awesome man. I'm just getting started after not doing much for the last couple years too. I know cold calling works though. I've done it before and it might suck but it really works when it comes down to it. I'm about to start doing it too next week.

Good work, Josh. Don't quit when it gets difficult and don't come here when you have time to sell. Daytime is for selling. Night time is for working and screwing around on the internet.

    • don't set yourself up to fail.

make some more calls to his competitor and set up 1-3 more appts.

Script : "been helping people in your industry, meeting with your competitors and thought you should hear how were helping out..."

this will empower you and not count on this being a sale. you may have noticed...your daydreaming about selling this 1 person, your feeling great...but that's in your head.

play the #'s game and fear of loss.

not trying to rain on your parade.

Not that I have kicked any goals YET, I attribute my new found levels of motivation to going to bed and getting up at the same time - at a resonable time - in line with the "normal" world. As much as I was skeptical to that idea (doesn't matter, no distractions in early morning hours etc.) it is really helping.

Anyway, I have one more day to think about my "plan of attack".
    I can
    - tell the guy how important social marketing is today
    - let him know about the potential customers that could be gained by seoing his current website.
-Talk about setting up Google and Facebook ad campaigns
    - Advise them to update the FB page with their deals and services regularly. It's free advertising in all their potential and current customers news feeds.

That's what I can tell. What I can do?

-Go in there, gather the info I need to fill in his facebook and build his page.
-Do KW research on GKT, find how people are searching for his business, use those keywords for his site and facebook
-Get all current employees to invite all friends to page. (Should I show them the fast way?)

    What have I missed?

As it will be my first client, how much should I charge? Can I earn residually? Should I not charge and just concentrate on testimonials for future website, marketing juice(for the first few clients?).

I can do this right?! Set up this little busy business?

Your words are meaning a lot to me guys, thanks again.

You're doing a lot of TELLING here. Try ASKING.

Does your prospect think social marketing is important?

Does your prospect believe that new customers could be gained via a website?

Have they heard of Google Places and Facebook ad campaigns?

The answers to these questions will tell you a lot more about your prospect's attitudes and knowledge than you shoveling a bunch of features & benefits their way. And you'll know whether this is going to be an easy sale, or if you're up against a brick wall.

This. You need to gauge how much this person knows about Social media campaigns, ad word campaigns, and other SEO based stuff. If he knows nothing, but is willing to pay, sell a monthly facebook/twitter campaign and you take care of the special deals and updates... no money in initial sales, you need monthly payments.

Josh, go to the appointment as promised and sell the services you offered him. You can ask about his other needs and listen to him, but don't sell anything else in that appointment unless he begs for it.

Do not open the discussion to additional services. Nothing will mark you as an amateur quite like acting like a flake who can't stop talking about social media to busy people who are working.

It's too much for your first ever real life meeting, and those services are things you do for clients, not for strangers. When he gives you a check, then he's your client. Finish his work before you give him new proposals.

Decide on your price right now and ask for it when you get there. Recap what you proposed to do on the phone and in your appointment. Start making out the invoice there (or on a fresh notebook page) and ask him closing questions. "I charge ____ for this. Do you want to pay in full, or a 50% deposit now and the balance when I'm finished?"

Don't say another word until he does. This is critical. The first one who speaks at this point pays. Either he will tell you how he wants to pay, or your nerves will overcome you, you'll start blathering about Google Places or something else he knows nothing about and you'll pay with a lost sale.

Just trust me on this. You can come back here and ask me or David Miller why it works this way after your appointment. But be careful not to say a word at this moment. You're very likely to make this sale, so don't make it more complicated than it has to be.

The very best thing you can do for yourself is to prospect like crazy on Monday and Tuesday before your meeting so that you set up even more meetings and you'll go to this one brimming with real confidence.

Selling is fun, especially when you're doing it for yourself. I think you have the knack for this, so I expect you to be making lots of appointments soon. Come back after your meeting and let us know how you did.

What I have found works is offer something that is high value but really easy to do say social media pages, and offer it for a low price then over deliver on the service and get them a video on page one (very easy to do). Now your positioned as the expert and they are now 21 times more likely to buy from you again.

Page one on Google or a website like YouTube?

Not living in a major city so the amount of people who use sites like twitter, digg and youtube isn't as high as people who use google.

Helped my girlfriend today fix her Holden Kingswood up today instead of taking action! Did get on the back of a prospect via email though.

Just wasn't in the mood. Let's hope tomorrow comes.

Hey guys, put on my nice clothes and aftershave today to meet up with the prospect but he never came back from lunch. Got given his mobile to set up a proper time though.

Meanwhile visited a couple of places in person. Got a good prospect to see on Friday from a clock repair shop. He has a website but no facebook. Mostly was talking to them, gaining information, researching, testing the waters, gaining confidence.

Tomorrow I will get the Yellow Pages out and do some serious cold calling.
The girlfriend suggested I choose places that can update regularly on FB to entise customers such as cafes, restaurants, mechanics by posting photos.

Seems like business owners don't have the time or want to update, so perhaps need to get a good camera and set up a system to regularly visit and take photos, find out their deals so I can update the FB pages myself.

    Will keep you posted..

    Hey guys,

Bit of news for you all.

Got a pretty strong prospect to meet up with next week. He told me to bring plans to work with him to upgrade his website, make a facebook and improve his rankings. Mentioned that his comp took up the first few pages of Google when I typed "(my town) (his service)". Explained I'm starting my business from scratch and could offer him cheap prices and was after a testimonial.

Another guy I have been contacting through email lately wants his website redone to and a facebook.

Still got the original cold call prospect to follow up. Haven't been able to catch him in person.

    Doing better than before though.
