Buyers Motivation - 2012

Hi there,

did you noticed how people go nuts when they see their brand / name on a product?

My first customer that I had sold a website, SEO and a listing in my local directory to wanted even more - a mobile website! Not because she needed it, but - I saw it in her eyes - because she wanted it. Things to promote - with her name on it.

That's not only her thinking that way - I admit I go crazy as well, when I see my company logo on my business car, etc.

And I am planning to use this strategy. I will create a free Mock-up and confront the client - with his logo displayed. I am sure that he will want it.

I would like to read more about that topic. What is the psychology behind that? Please don't tell me just "self-love" - I would like to know the terminology in the business world.

    Perhaps rewriting the title and turning it to a complete sentence...(non blind) would get more response, and better more targeted responses.

    Just a heads up!

    Hint to all newby's and relative ones.... Its such a shame for a good thread not to have an appropriate title, for several basic everyday reasons and even moreso; advanced marketing reasons.

    Martin Buckley gets it... Im assuming!

    Anyone out there on google searching for how to make money building pallets will surely find him. Long tail keywords.... You may think hardly anyone on the WF is interested in that stuff... but people come to the wf from other places, and what draws them?

    Now you get it.

    But well, maybe such a title create curiosity and sooner or later someone want to click on it, as the post number grows with people like you.

    I was more being a Warrior big brother than criticizing , if it came across that way.

    No, broad marketing is never the way to go, which is what we do when we dont specify in the title what we are referring to.

    In reality you get more clicks by specifying than not. and you attract more people who are in a specific mindset and who may answer your question better having giving it forethought by means of reading the title.

    In answer to the OP. Good that you caught that particular buyers motivation and recognized it.

    Whats the name of the buyers motivation there? - Ego.

    People buy for ego as much as any other reason.

    Particularly small business owners.

      Andrew Carnegie as a young boy, maybe 6 or 7, sold rabbits to his classmates even though the Scottish countryside isn't exactly short of them.

      How?

      He named them after his fellow classmates.

      Years later in the US he used exactly the same tactic when wooing George Pullman who had invented the 1st Class Sleeping Cabin into a merger with Woodruffs.

      Carnegie: 'And I was thinking of calling the merged company Pullmans'

      Pullman: 'Where do I sign'

    No prob.

    The same type of customer is motivated by stuff like "You may know some of the other prestigious clientele we work with..." and name dropping.

    They are motivated by prestige alot. This would be a great thread to list buyer motivations.

    Some do it because you said "all their neighbors did it..." (social motivation).

    Some do it because it costs so much that they are the only ones who can afford it..."status".

    Some do it for "Roi".

    Some do it for scarcity or urgency... because this is a "limited time offer"...

    Bargains... some are discount motivated

    Features...some are feature motivated

    Some do it, because they think they are supposed to and dont know why...

    Some do it because of special payment options...

    It goes on and on, would love to hear more.

    We like it when people are a little bit jealous when they look at our lives. We certainly don't want to be looked down on or felt sorry for. We do and buy many things either because we like them (our own self-image), or because we think others will like them.

    I used to have this one business partner that felt it was more important to have a $1000/mn billboard then simple advertisements on Kijiji for $35/week. The billboards created NO calls where the kijiji ads (a simple survey actually) had a stream of incoming calls.

    OK, what was even weirder was a company that was competing began to make fun of these billboards my biz partner ordered on their own billboards. It was like a city smackdown billboard brawl! So damn funny! Still no calls off them. Tons of calls from a bunch of $35 ads tho!

    The billboards were such a "vein promotion"! Total waste of cash. Luckily it came out of their end of the business.

    I love seeing my ads placed and it feels good to tell my kids hey I wrote that ad, but I do not place it for that fact. It's all very scientific or so I tell myself!

      John, learned that working for one fortune 500 place. They were the cheapest Bs in the world and we did 12 projects at a time that would not be approved without a projected savings of 1 million per project for the company. In other words, if we did not save the company $12 million/year we would have not jobs. Actually it sounds like a lot but a million bucks adds up fast with labour. Learned pretty fast about ROI! That was a $2.6 billion/yr in revenue company and it was a drop to them but they knew where to cut it and as the topic of this goes, did not fancy conceited marketing tricks....although they did rent the entire top floor of the CN Tower once a year for their clients.
