Google places listing vs organic results

I was just browsing around and typed in a keyword + city in google. ALL of the results were organic listings (non google places listings)

This made me wonder, If I optimized a google places listing for that same keyword and started building it would it be easier to get on the first page and/or outrank these standard listings?

The competition is pretty weak in this situation but what is yalls take on this?

    Abbot,
If the niche is local you should be fine. However if your going up against any kind of marketers it goes both ways. We out rank google places a lot for keywords. On the same token, if you optimze a GP listing for that phrase with no competition you should rank easily.

The easiest thing to do here.. TEST IT. Try one in a category that is similar and see what happens...

    Regards,

I did tried this a while ago for my niche keyword but couldn't rank on the first page. But you should try this and give it a shot. Let us know if you succeed.
