Question for those who sell Google Places listings

For those who sell google places listings, do you have the business owner cliam onwership then give you the log in detail, or do you claim ownership yourself? For an uncalimed listing obviously.

Obviously claiming ownership myself would be faster (and what if business owner uses gmail, they wouldn't exactly be thrilled with the idea of giving you access to their google account) But would Google get suspicious/ban you if you have say 5+ business listings claimed (located in different towns in different industries etc.)

Have a client that wants be to complete their Google places listing and submit it to a few directories, once google has it updated, but I am not sure how to go about the "claim onwership" step

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can do it either way. There's no reason why you can't do it yourself on your client's behalf. Someone should set up a google account/email for the places listing if your client doesn't want to use their own email. Each places listing should have a different email account associated with it.

you can do it either way. If the listing is not claimed i recommend you do it yourself with the client's consent.

    J smith,

Get some good programs on Google Places Optimization if you want to do GP optimization, not just claiming listings. Claiming listings is easy, optimizing GP takes a bit more work but you get results for your clients.

Stranger, any reason for each GP listing having its own email associated with it?
But yea, that seems the best way to go - make a gmail account, claim the ownership myself with this new account, then give the client log in info once I am done with it.

Thanks for your feed back guys.

Sure. If you have one, master address that you use to manage all of your clients' accounts, then you may have privacy concerns since you will need to give your clients that login information. Also, if one of your clients leaves you, it may become problematic if you have their GP listing associated with your email address - especially one that you use to manage multiple accounts/clients. Know what I mean?

There's no reason not to have a separate email account for each listing/client, as setting up an email account is easy and free. Give your clients the privacy that they appreciate and make things easy for yourself if a client decides to drop you. Besides that, I can pretty much bet that if a client decides to drop you on bad terms - they are NOT going to want you to be able to log in to their GP listing and change everything out.

I just applied for google places for my own business and google send out a postcard to the business address for verification etc, so I don't see how its possible to just claim a listing without the business owners consent or
      assistance.

Maybe there is an alternative way to do this that I'm not aware of, I'd love to know if thats the case .

You can create fake listings with or without a client, but that's not what the OP is asking about.

I am obviously doing this with the consent of the owner (after all wouldn't be much of a client otherwise) was just wondering how people usually go about this step.
Thanks for your feedback Stranger, makes perfect sense.

You most definitely do not want to use your own gmail account. As others have stated just setup a new gmail account. I actually haven't had a client yet refuse to give me their gmail account as it allows me to setup analytics and Google + for them as well.

      Good luck.

"do you have the business owner cliam onwership then give you the log in detail, or do you claim ownership yourself?"

I have been selling Place Listing claims and optimization for going on 2 years. What I do is create a new gmail account on behalf of the client, it would be; "businessname@gmail.com"

"would Google get suspicious/ban you if you have say 5+ business listings claimed (located in different towns in different industries etc.)"

I have over 100 accounts that I log into from the same IP/network and have never had a "hiccup" in my accounts. My assumption is that Google does not mind consultants handling multiple accounts as long as you play by the rules. Of course that could change at any moment with Big G's fickle nature LOL

        Good luck to you J!

set up a new gmail account as stated above to use but if possible use the call in method to verify the business owner. It's very easy to call them and let them know they will be receiving a phone call with a code. Tell them to write it down and you will call them right back for it! Simple.

I've done this for one of our clients and this is exactly what we did...

Let them know a call is coming and what to expect, or let them know a postcard is coming and to call with the authorization number when it does.

The client should set up a free non-gmail email under their own domain account and share the password with you.
They should Delete a current Places entry from their own account.
You then make or claim a Places entry in the new account.

If they have an email account they'd like to have associated with their listing it may be best to use it. Have them to change the password to something you both know. Do your work and then have them change the password again once you are done.

This can work for GP, hosting, WP sites etc...

I am liking the idea of this.. I have a very relevant domain name (yourgoogleplace.com),

I am not quite sure whether or not this is primarily an online or offline market.

I understand about the principles behind google place optimization, and also wonder if adwords express could also be marketed at the same time.

Apologies for the thread hijack, but search brought me straight here.

I have numerous clients who want to show up on Google Places....setting up individual accounts is not the issue. The issue is the authorization. Is there a way to become authorized so that I receive the pin on their behalf? I only saw the post card option, no phone call option.... any suggestions?
