    Although I fully agree I would define sales more precisely as:

    Persuading qualified prospects to buy what you have.

      marketing term is very vast and can not be define in few words, but in consice form we can say that" marketing is meeting need of human with profits" and selling is the part of marketing.selling have many types and long disscussion.

    It is only as you have described if you have done no marketing.

    eg Apple makes people aware of what they have to the tune of $hundreds of millions in yearly marketing budget.

    Apple stores help people buy what the marketing has already done.

    If Apple didn't do the Marketing the Apple Stores would be doing as you have written with regards to selling ie The staff would have to make you want what they have to sell first.

    It is an example of where S&M depts work well together.

    I've always seen sales and marketing as different sides of the same coin. Both are "selling" but in different ways.

    And marketing isn't always about making people aware. Sometimes it is branding. And sometimes like a lot of for sale on TV stuff it is about selling.

    Myself I don't really seperate sales and marketing as they both are doing the same basic thing which is moving potential clients to spend money.

    Depending on your business you may have multiple marketing steps before a true "sales" step or you may have marketing that is itself selling.

    I've completely screwed this up because I tried to post in a hurry. When I went to delete, correct and repost, I found you guys had already replied and I didn't want to waste your replies.

    I've been working for a long time to make this as concise as possible for training purposes. I want this to be easy to memorize and fundamentally true, based on the root words. I want to drill my people to know what they are to be doing and thinking about at all times using fundamental, categorical logic.

    I'm sharing it here to help the new members avoid the gimmicks. And I'm looking for any basic flaws in the way I've expressed it.

    Special thanks to David Miller for the quick, astute suggestion to use "persuading"

    Let me restate:

    Definitions of MARKETING, ADVERTISING and SELLING

    Marketing is placing your goods or services in the marketplace.

    Advertising is letting buyers know that you have what they want to buy.


    Selling is persuading your prospects to buy what you have.

      Marketing, per the AMA, is Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

    Negotiating with the Chinese is not easy. The cultural differences are much different from those in the Western world. You must always build a relationship first, make sure you have a sample, and learn to be firm but fair when you start negotiating. If you’ve done that and the sample is satisfactory, the pricing negotiations begin. There are a few things you can do to assure you get the price you want.

    If you’ve done everything right, and you’re ready for the price negotiations, a trip to China is necessary. You will continue to build and develop your relationship with the factory you’ve selected. If you can’t make the trip, and have someone you’ve been working with already in China who can be an representative for you, you can send them instead. This is a more cost efficient manner. The representative will be more familiar with the customs in China, and won’t have to make the long trip. Face-to-face, however, is the way the Chinese prefer to do things.

    Before you make the trip, or send a representative, some research is in order. You need to make sure you know everything you need to know to make a fair estimate. You need to know taxes, shipping rates, and any other fees that apply to your particular product. You’ll be in a much better position to get a good price if you do.

    Study your product thoroughly. You need to know what the market prices are, or you won’t negotiate a good price. You shouldn’t push the Chinese factory into a price that is too low. The Chinese are in business to make money as well. If your price is too low, they may not be able to make profit. When this happens, they will probably lower the quality of your product to achieve profit. They want to keep you as a customer, so they’ll accept your lower price, but they will have to lower the quality. They won’t tell you that, and you won’t discover it until the product has been shipped and you’re stuck with a product that doesn’t meet your quality standards. The Western world may think this is a poor business ethic. In China, however, it’s just the way it is. It’s a way of life.

    In order to assure you get the product and quality you want, the price needs to be fair, and all aspects of the product need to be discussed. You need to make sure they know exactly what you want, and you pay them enough to make it at a profit. They won’t try to cheat you out of your money. They just follow your requests while cutting costs where they think they can.

    When this happens, you’ll feel they tried to cheat you, and they’ll think they followed your instructions. The reality of the situation is that it’s just a communication gap between the cultures. In any event, you’ve read this article, so you’re not going to make that mistake. You’re going to build a relationship with your factory, offer a fair price, and receive a product you’ll be proud to sell.

    Marketing involve in product, sale, build customer, maintain customer, how to bring your product to the market. Everything in marketing strategies.
