MAKE $700 WITH A REFRIGERATOR MAGNET

This money making idea was one i didn't put into my new WSO, see my signture below, so I decided I would share it here for free.

MAKE $700 WITH A REFRIGERATOR MAGNET

WHAT IS IT:

A business card size refrigerator magnet imprinted with the photo, name, address and phone number of a real estate agency along with the name and phone number of 8 different home service businesses, such as a plumber, carpenter, electrician, etc. (see pic below)

HOW IT WORKS:

Contact in person or by phone local plumbers, carpenters, electricians, etc and offer to list their business name and phone number on 500 refrigerator magnets for only $100 that will be distributed by the realtors of the real estate agency to new home owners.

HOW TO GET REALTORS TO DISTRIBUTE YOUR MAGNETS:

Simply call or visit local real estate agencies and offer to place their photo, name, and phone number on 500 refrigerator magnets for FREE in exchange for them placing the magnets on the refrigerators of all the houses they are selling.

WHY IS IT VALUABLE TO ADVERTISERS:

Advertisers name and phone number will be seen on a constant basis every time the home owner goes to their refrigerator or uses the magnet to hang something up, so when the home owner needs a plumber, carpenter, electrician, etc. they will remember the home services magnet on their refrigerator and will call the service provider listed on the magnet that they need.

WHERE TO GET YOUR MAGNETS PRINTED:

I suggest using an online printer such as VistaPrint.com where you can get 500 full color business card size refrigerator magnets printed for only $99.

PROFIT POTENTIAL:

8 ad spots sold at $100 each equals $800 gross minus $100 for printing expenses equals a net profit of $700.

To your success,

Martin

    Martin,

Once again, your genius causes my head to sway uncontrollably! I have bought all your WSOs and am constantly amazed at the many ways you create to make money. This is no different. What an absolutely FAIL PROOF method. People go to their refrigerators MORE than their PCs! This is absolutely astounding and very easy to do. I can see LOTS of service providers wanting to sign up for this method of promoting their business.

Please keep up the good work,

    chemo38

What an incredible win for all parties involved.

I have only one question for you pertaining to real estate agents.

Do you believe independent agents or non-independent agents to be more receptive to this type of marketing.

I know they're all commissioned based but I'm thinking those that work under a master agency like a Harry Norman, Keller Williams, type vs a sole agent?

In other words, are Harry Norman type of real estate agents allowed to work outside of their company provided marketing materials?

        Thanks for this great share!

Great idea....but couldn't it very well be distributed by (and with a higher turnover rate...) like say...a pizza shop or beauty salon? They service way more customers than a realtor any day. Just sayin....

Grrr!! I can't get the sample magnet to show. Darn! Keeps *buffering*..darn computer.

Nice idea. The pizza owner would probably be far more excited thinking of how many more apartments, condos, homes, etc., his frig magnet will be displayed.

Think Pizza as the main company and moving companies/truck rental, taxi/airport shuttle, maid service, hair salons, daycare, strictly wings eatery(cause i love'm), carpet cleaner and dry cleaners would round out that magnet quite nicely

I live in one of the nicest apartment homes in my community. I think I shall be giving my local pizzeria a call on Monday to pitch this idea.

            Many thanks Martin!

                Hey Martin...okay, saw the business card and it's cool...but...my brain is on 'over' drive wanting to tweak that card. Here's what I'd do a just a liiiiiil bit differently;

1.) Remove all of the (redundant) area codes from the bottom advertisers.
                Why?

Because it's already been established based (on the Realtor's contact info) that these are all local business numbers.

2.) Align the numbers up so folks don't have to visually jump all over to establish which number belongs to which business...it might confuse some folks, especially one's who wear (bi focal) glasses.

Don't make them have to do annoying visual alignment gymnastics. Make it a clean readable, line.

3.) I would have the adverts done in 2 different colors so customers would have an easier time establishing one business name/number from the one above or below it.

I can't tell you how many times I have looked at a listing...and combined phone numbers from 2 different businesses! Sometimes I caught myself and sometimes...

                Other than that....it's great! :::

Giving it and this thread 2 thumbs up!::::

Working with a pizza is a great idea, as i know because I do it every day with
my pizza discount card business, so if I were to combine my magnet idea with
a pizza shop and other local advertisers, I would do my magnet like I found at:

This money making idea is so simple and easy to do, so I hope
            someone takes action on it.

            To your success,

Thanks, Martin for that awesome link! That's exactly the kind of colorful, multi-ad magnet look I am going for! Businesses would love it!

By the way, Warrior, Bob (Jake) Ross does something very similar...but not in magnets. He does huge, JUMBO coupon mailers that looks like the one above that get sent out to 10,000 or more households a month thru the US Postal Service's EDD (Every Door Direct) program!

                Great Ideas everyone!

I was going to say NeverTooLate was crazy for thinking people would just randomly throw away useful magnets on their refrigerators... until I saw this monstrosity....

Good lord.... that thing would be in the recycle bin before you could say "Anna's Italian Restaurant".... it looks like a freakin' hybrid of the latest X Box shootem up game crossed with Ugly business cards with a dash of park bench advertising thrown in for good measure!

To each his own I guess, but I like the original one.... small color ad at the top on white br with plain black type...

I picked up the WSO that Bob has on helping businesses with their 4 color printing needs. Excellent info - packed with great ideas. I contacted the printer he mentions in the WSO and got a sample of a card similar to what you show in your post. Probably far more effective than the magnet idea with the number of people that can get it immediately as opposed to the "dribble effect" of one magnet at a time passed out by a realtor or other business.

Really...? So, then, I guess if something like this huge 9 x 12 jumbo ad mailer came in your mailbox you'd be disgusted and throw it away, too.... And by the way...these get mailed out to 10,000 + homes...

I'm always looking for a deal. I'd definitely look at the offers - even if were an "ugly" ad.

Its completely different. One is something you need to live with on your refrigerator. The other is an advertisement that you can look at once and throw in the trash if you are not interested.

I never get 'disgusted' by advertisments, but I dont display them in my kitchen on purpose either

Good point and as you said, theses are 2 different animals, Bob's being the one that gets a one shot to grab attention versus a refrigerator magnet that needs to somewhat blend in. You know its there when you need it.

Thank you for sparking a great thread. People do keep those magnets sometimes for years that is the beauty of them. But most businesses are just promoting their own stuff, not leveraging the medium properly.

          Hi Mojo,

I have 3 close friends who are realtors. One is independent, the rest work for big companies. All of them would be interested in this idea. To them, it is nothing more than passing out their business cards to anyone that will accept it. The difference being; this business card is attached to a magnet AND has service vendors names and phone numbers on it. Realtors LOVE new marketing tools and are always looking for new methods. By the way, I sent you a PM.

I have an aunt and a good friend who are both Realtor's and yes, this is appealing but that's just one segment of the population and one dimensional thinking. That's why I thought of an even bigger audience who would appreciate and love having these up on their fridge and the business who would not only would love giving these out but who would love another, more interesting way to get permanently superimposed in people's minds and not spend a dime!

Also, think about all the new homeowners...and old homeowners you'd be missing out on! What about the houses that were sold but the agent didn't have these magnets? What about prior homeowners who would love to have such a magnet for emergencies..? What about apartment dwellers? They still have needs and emergencies. What these people all have in common that ties them together is 1.) Needs and 2.) The need to EAT...or if you're a woman...the need to look 'good', which from 12 to 90, women will always go to the hair dresser to get their hair 'did' and men will go to the barbershop to get their hair clipped and shaved.

So, again, a pizza shop, Realtor, Barber Shop or any high customer traffic business would be a great fit for something like this!

Auto mechanic..who doesn't want a reasonably priced mechanic nowadays?
Hair dresser--what woman doesn't want a hairdresser who understands her hair care needs?
Chiropractor...what person complaining of back, neck, shoulder and hip pain wouldn't call?
Shoe Repair...with the cost of everything going up, isn't it cheaper to repair a broken in pair?

So, these places, too, would make for an awesome 'give away' to their customers! I'm just putting my 'own' spin on an awesome basic idea that Martin has put forward.

It's your fantastic spin that made it difficult for me to sleep last night. I love your twist on this idea

I have one question regarding payment.

I do not have a business checking account as yet and won't until my dba goes through which could take up to 3 weeks in my county, yeah I know so antiquated. Only in backwards, Georgia

So until then, I won't be able to open a business checking account.

Would either of you want until then or simply ask them to pay via Paypal or gasp...cash?

                :::Rubs chin in deep thought::::

Okay, so, why not simply have some free business cards made up through Vista Print with your name on it, used *creatively* making your name your company's name so when they write the check, it's made out to you... Then, whenever your DBA goes through, you can simply inform them that you've *changed* the name to..blah blah blah. I mean, like..what's the worse that can happen by then? They've already done business with you satisfactorily and businesses and company change their names all the time. So, what would be the big whoop? Know what I mean?

And as far as backwoods, rural *Georgia's* concerned...it ain't all bad. I was born and raised in CT but my dad, moved back *home* to rural Ga once he retired. I bet they've got newer construction of schools, government and commercial buildings than NY, CT, MA and the whole of the Northeast, combined! Heck, the way they're building highways and byways to reach all of those sleepy cities and towns south of Atlanta (Macon/Perry/Warner Robbins..) it was blowing my mind! LOL! I was totally shocked to see such new construction and fast food joints spring up almost overnight! And one more thing the 'country' got that even the big southern cities don't---true southern HOSPITALITY! I was blown away at going into Motor Vehicle with my dad and it was brand spanking new...and not no cheap construction either! Freaked me out how nice the people were and how helpful. The lady who helped him even knew the people at his insurance company by name and made a quick phone call to get whatever he needed, done. We were in and out in 30 minutes. Try THAT one in Atlanta or anywhere else...pfft! Right. Ain't gonna happen!

Then I come back here and see nothing but dead weight and space. Old and decrepit...and bad attitudes.

I'm wondering...is this the type or kind of magnet you are speaking of, Martin?

                  Refrigerator Magnet

Update: I thought the pic I saw was of a multi card magnet. It wasn't as one of their reps explained. Didn't get a chance to get more in depth as I was on my way somewhere and can't drive and talk; that's an immediate ticket. So, being that it was Friday, I'll simply have to hold tight til Monday to get all of my questions answered.

I will look into Martin's siggy and hopefully finally see the actual magnet that is working.

send your own magnet to homeowners with a local # and website local directory to all those services. You could charge the local biz a setup and then get a per lead fee as well when customer connects through your number.

Oh now see...that's a bit much....a bit too much work. Do you know what it would cost to send those magnets through the mail? That's why it's far cheaper, much more valuable and to the point to have them distributed by well known businesses to their personal customers. They're serving double duty and you've made a decent income that can be doubled, even tripled, simply adding more businesses to an even bigger magnet.

          philboy,

Cars in the USA are taxed as well. We pay the tax once a year when we renew our vehicle registration. We give them money and they give us a sticker we put on the upper right hand corner of our license plate.

I guess it doesn't make a difference where the sticker is put since the dark side still has our money :-).

          Have a great day,

      mojo1,

      You said:

"I do not have a business checking account as yet and won't until my dba goes through which could take up to 3 weeks in my county, yeah I know so antiquated. Only in backwards, Georgia

So until then, I won't be able to open a business checking account.

Here is what I did before I opened a biz acct. I simply had the owner make the ck payable to my name. If asked why, I told him the truth. I said I own the company and I deposit all checks into my account.

Nobody ever told me to go fly a kite. They simply wrote out the check and we were both happy.

That's how I did it but if you are uncomfortable doing it that way have them make the check to your biz and wait till you get your dba.

      Good luck.

If a real estate agent put a magnet on my refrigerator, I would throw it away. Wouldn't most people? Would you ever call anyone on that magnet? Why?

So if this does not benefit the advertisers on the magnet, it is a one shot deal. It does not benefit everyone involved, does it?

Anyone thinking this through? Are business owners that naive about advertising? They would not even be able to see their ad. Think about it.

Why would they throw it away?

I'm new in town. I just bought a house in a new state/city, and my Realtor is giving me a readily available source for people he/she is recommending for whatever services that are listed.

Many apartment complexes give a "move-in packet" with information about pizza places, schools, water/electric/gas/cable companies, churches, voting registration and more.

This is the same principle on a smaller scale, and I could see where it could be very effective.

Its funny how I actually value a lot of your ideas and think they're great. Up untill I click onto your website and see nothing but money everywhere. I just can't stay on your website because of the way it looks.

I like a lot of your advice and think you're an intelligent guy, but I believe your website can use a complete redesign - it screams "look at me, I'll make you rich". And even though I know logically its not a scam site, I can't shake that emotional feeling that makes me feel like it is.

I'm also not trying to offend you, I like your work, I just think as far as your website things can be presented a bit ... well, better. Maybe something more subtle could have a much greater impact. And instead of money everywhere, maybe just testimonials? IDK, just trying to help. All I know is the website design bothers me a lot. And I felt the same way last time I checked it out a couple months back.

    Thanks for another great idea!

:confused:... but if the advertisers are paying YOU for the chance to reach the buying community..and not a cent is coming out of your pocket....okay, you lost me. Are you saying you'd do all the printing yourself? Now you're spending money on ink/replacement ink (and if you don't own a printer..)...you're making this job a lot harder than it has to be. Yeah, I get lost quite frequently myself I was thinking more about when getting started, printing a few yourself to test out the waters, especially if you live in a small community, or for making samples to show business owners exactly how the concept works.

But...but...and this is just a but now ....couldn't you get free samples or mock ups from the printer? I say that because their quality is going to be far superior...10 x's superior to your low quality ink jet printer. Here's a couple of thoughts that came to mind...

The idea in itself is a great idea. The only problem I see is distributing them in a timely manner. Which Realtor today (or even before when the market was hot) sells 500 homes in a year? That would be 40+ home sales in a month. Unless you are a SUPER Realtor with a full time staff at your disposal, ain't gonna happen!

More likely, they are lucky if they close ONE deal a month but for the point of discussion, lets say they close 5 deals a month.

            500 magnets divided by 5 deals/m = 100 months, or
8.33 years. That is if all is well...

Now, would you, as a potential advertiser, want to wait that long? You might not still be in business.

So, not to just critize and shoot this whole thing down, what can you do?

            1. You could have the brokerage advertise and not the individual realtor. That way, even though less personal, the whole real estate office could get potential leads. Still, not the best way to go but, it is a solution.

            2. If variable data printing excists for other types of printing material, it should also be possible with magnets, for sure. What the cost in addition would be, I have no idea and some online printers do not do variable data printing. Off to research folks...

For those of you who do not know what variable data printing is, its simply leaving the core by itself and changing a couple of things, such as the realtors name, extension and photo and might as well throw in their cell phone number as well.

I would not give it to them for free since now you have to spend more time. What could you sell it for? Don't know, this is just hypothethical.
If a realtor where to buy their own magnets, what would that cost them? At least charge them the same as it would cost them doing their own because you are the one putting it all together.

Would this version be profitable for you? I have no idea, just tossing it out for you to think about...

              Good point about distribution.

              Hm.

How about a mobile home sales biz? They deal in higher volume.

Also - maybe apartment complexes? The info at the top can be contact info for the apartment office, maintenance, etc?

Re higher volume in mobile home sales. First off, most realtors do not want to sell mobile homes, it de-values their image and secondly, they don't know how to sell them. They are not familiar with the process of park approval, which can be quite daunting to say the least. Financing is almost impossible unless you have stellar credit. And, since real estate is down, a lot of mobile home owners are just walking away from their mobile home to buy a real house. Most agents that sell mobile homes are small time mobile home dealers agent's and have less volume too. So, that is out.

Your second idea re apartment complexes sounds a lot more doable and renters in my area stay an average of `18 months so the turn-over is higher. It would have to be a larger complex though and hopefully the apartment manager wouldn't need corporate approval.

There's a fine line in recommending contractor's, especially for realtors and mobile home sales agent's. It COULD be seen as you are actually endorsing them and if the contractor does anything wrong, they could actually sue you (yes, I've seen it happen more than once).

I would stick to "safer" options such as restaurants, house cleaners, carpet cleaner, lawn care etc. and avoid others. Call me paranoid but I've been there.

Hmm, apartment complexes, yes, I would def look into that, Eva

Oh, around here Realtors only deal in mobile homes if land is attached, so they sell them at only a slightly higher rate than regular homes.

I was thinking for the mobile home dealers, the magnets could have the dealership name, logo and contact info at the top, along with something that says they love referrals or something like that.

In my area, mobile home sales are a huge deal, with huge dealerships and high volume of sales and a HUGE amount of competition. (Picture 8 mobile home dealerships - HUGE ones - on the main road in most towns around here. Oh yeah, it's a huge business here.)

Apartment complexes range here from small to mega-huge, so that's a definite possibility.

Might get a larger magnet, and have tips on it, plus the apartment complex info (for the manager, the clubhouse, maintenance, after-hours emergency, etc). Maybe even have a set of tips that the manager wants to give the tenants. (Like "Change air filters once a month" "Remember trash pickup is Tuesdays" etc. - whatever the top 5 or ten issues are for the manager.) That way the manager would have an incentive to make sure everyone has them.

They may even give them out to ALL tenants - not just new ones.

                  Maybe?

I have NO idea where the "Delta Quadrant" is, lol. I'm in So. Ca and here, space rent is killing it (think $1,000 a month) and I was talking mobile home parks, not private property. Even mobile homes on land has taken a dump here. A friend of mine bought a repo for $50,000 with 2 1/2 acres, when it was on top, appraised at $389,000.

                    CONDO'S!

A bit higher "quality" inhabitants than apartment buildings. Have the condo association's contact info on there and then list some other biz on there. I would go with a larger magnet, besides biz, include some emergency phone #'s on there as well.

Some slightly larger magnets comes with a mini paper yearly calendar attatched to it but now we are straying from Martin's original idea, lol. Doesn't hurt to brain-storm though...

The Delta Quadrant has mobile homes all over! Didn't you know!?

I live in SC. Mobile home industry is huge here.

Yes, we're straying from the original idea, but isn't that the beauty of the forum? Getting ideas and showing different things that can be done?

Ok, I'll stray a little bit more, hopefully Martin won't mind. Doing a magnet for a mobile home dealer, park or private property doesn't matter. HERE, unless you are way out in the boonies, finding a supplier for "spare parts" for mobile homes is very difficult.

Top of the magnet will then have the dealer's contact info and then suppliers of the "spare parts" would be listed as well as the best pizza place

The regular skirting of a mobile home looks like crap but there are beautiful alternatives, that's a listing you could charge WAY more than a $100 for. So far, one down.

A/C and evaporative coolers, listing #2.

                        Heating systems, #3.

                        Carport awnings and supports, #4.

                        Piers and bracing, #5.

                        Plumbing supplies, bathtubs, #6.

General supplier of a little bit of everything else, #7.

                        Pizza place, lol, #8.

Mobile home parks here, and not including land, has anywhere from a 100 to 600 homes and there are easily 200 parks in my area and that is an under-statement.

                        Hmm, I'm really thinking now...

I used to sell them and did really well doing so for many years. Now, in my area, wouldn't want to go back at doing that for anything but this sounds like a great side biz.

Pitch one dealer against another and see who is willing to pay top dollar for being the anchor of the magnet. Yep, there you have it!

Great idea but I can't say I'm clear on how to get these magnets onto 500 fridges in the neighbourhood.

I see some of these printing deals are cheap enough. How about sending a few kids around to stick those magnets to the door on every home? Put a headline on there to mention "essential services" or something like that. Maybe put a note behind with a bit of copy explaining why they can throw away the note but should keep the magnet and put it on their fridge?

Most entrance doors are metal, at least here they are. Magnets stick to them no problem.

Doesn't have to be a realtor as the top anchor, it could be any business. You could give them the top spot for free if they give out the magnets to their paying customers. Doesn't limit it to new homeowners but everybody needs some type of service every now and then. Might have to switch the categories around a bit though...

OK. This is a s simple as it gets: Get any business that makes in-home calls (think any handyman, repairman like furnace, washer, dryer, roofer, pest control service, etc.) tobe the featured business and then restaurants in non-competing niches (Mexican, Italian, Greek, Pizza, etc.) as the paying advertisers below tha main business.

  • Great idea! Found someone on ebay that is selling 1000 4X6 color magnets for cheap. That could give you more space. I was thinking this would work well with local restaurants. Sell half of the ad space to a local restaurant ( maybe even put some of their menu on there) and the other half to local service providers. Bingo!

    How about doing the following:

Ask 7-8 businesses whether they want to be featured in the refrigerator magnet for FREE, and then feature the real estate guy on a bigger part of the magnetic card for FREE as long as he puts them in peoples houses.
What you have done is, for 100$(thats how much it costs to get the magnetic cards), you have introduced yourself to 8 new business owners and given them FREE advertising what gives you a great opportunity for upsells If you only sell a service that costs 500$ to only ONE of them, and I'm sure that is highly possible, you have just made a profit of 400$.

To clarify, you should ask to meet those 8 owners in person so you actually build some kind of a relationship with them and also talk to them about what you do
I would not be confident of hitting them with an upsell right away, I would wait after I 'send out' the magnetic cards and then send them pictures of how they look like so that they can actually see this is real ... then analyze their marketing position and see which one of your services can benefit them (ie if they dont have a website, offer them a website) and bamm , call them or just email them, I'm sure you'll have their attention and they will be interested to see what you are offering.

I would suggest to target businesses that have spent some money on any type of marketing.

Let me know what you think guys

      agonce,

If I were to go the FREE route and offer business free advertising, I would have to say it would be best to work with say a pizza shop and offer to print 1000+ of their ad and coupons on the top half of a 8x10 piece of paper and then promote 6-8 other local businesses on the bottom half and then have the pizza shop deliver that flyer with ever pizza order.

I would also, suggest with the 6-8 other businesses they should be coupons, so each business can see that they are getting results from it and if they do see results, that will give you a better chance to close a paying deal with them, as they know you can produce results and they can trust you now.

      Just my 2 cent.

      Martin

I would also, suggest with the 6-8 other businesses they should be coupons, so each business can see that they are getting results from it and if they do see results, that will give you a better chance to close a paying deal with them, as they know you can produce results and they can trust you now.

wow wow MARTIN!! you 'da man !! That's actually an amazing idea, and it will work sooooooooooooo good with Bob's method with the big postcard.

You do the free advertising first, once they see good results, since they are getting clients for free, you show them your shiny unique postcard, and bamm

        Thanks!

Like the song featured in the Windex commercial..."I can see CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN HAS GONE!"

Another idea that has popped into my head...is to tell prospective businesses that want to be the main featured or 'Anchor" business with the largest spot...in order to get it at that great (promo) price is...they have to refer other businesses to you! They would also know what price to tell them the spots are going for (say...$250 each?)... so there is no shock but trust in value because they know one another, personally or professionally and 2, those others want to be connected to whatever they're connected to and possibly get new customers or clients...so..it's The follow the leader type of mentality....

Now, you've got them working for you and working hard to not only get on the magnet...but to be the main featured one at a great price!

Depending on how many magnets are being made, it wouldn't be unheard of to charge a *promo* price of $500. Imagine what it costs them to do a Yellow Page ad or even a printed calendar that they give away--$500 would be a steal/drop in the bucket---and they can control who it gets seen by or given to! You want to build their mindset around 2 things;Saving money and being in control of their exposure!

Okay, off to find a printer who can make me a life sized mock up so I can get this thing MOVING!!!

I think your concept of getting your fit in the door is good, but the main problem I see with this approach is training potential clients to "not buy from you." By offering something for free, you will inevitably attract the "freebie seekers" who will have a very hard time actually writing a check to you for any services.

Personally, I think the best way to build a solid long-term trustworthy relationship is to have an "intro offer" such as a $50-$200 transaction to start off. I firmly believe that trust is built when your customer puts their $100 of faith into you producing results for them, which then you just completely over-deliver and more often than not they will scale up their investment, earning you FAR GREATER revenues in the long run.

You can even use a "money-back guarantee" as a selling tool, because at that point if they do not feel satisfied with your work, no matter how AWESOME you deliver services to them in the future (if at all) they will never be happy, and will become a HUGE pain in your ass that you don't need to deal with.

      Just my 2 cents!

...I feel like Lois Lane! or like I've got a Batman flashlight and you saw my bat signal @ Bob! I gotta ask you something...Can you do magnets like your flyers but not as big and where they are not cut out...or do you know of a great source?

I just think that doing the multi ad magnets are like letting people take (smaller scale) 'baby' steps to MOVING ON UP TO THE EAST SIDE of big boy Jumbo Post Card Mailers... Once they learn one...then the other will be a breeze...and then they'll have 2 ways of marketing!

No, not chet...but trust me...we're all working on it! We just found out about this late last week, lol.

Martin, one thing, though, that keeps nagging at me is that FREE part. I just can't see giving up prime real estate on it for free. If anything they'll get a lower promo rate but not a free rate...because that magnet isn't some rinky dink business card that'll get tossed. It's a valuable piece of marketing that gets seen over and over by all who passes by it or comes toward it headed toward the 'fridge! It's a semi permanent billboard!

I think however, to make my point clear and to get my point across to them, they have to SEE a magnet mock up to really understand and appreciate the gravity of it all. Once they see just how big and colorful their 'business' card looks on one, they'll each be itching to not only get on it...but fight for the chance to be the main featured one for their area! So, free....ent....just ain't me! My brain just won't accept that. The right side keeps arguing with the left...and the left keeps saying "I don't CARE what you say, and I know what Martin says and is doing....but dammit, I say CHARGE them, anyway!"

Great Idea Martin! I like some of the ideas on your website as well. I have a question about this though. Don't clients want to see proof of the magnets actually being delivered to the homes being sold in order to build enough trust in you to cut you a $100 check? I'm trying to see it from the clients point of view. Whats your thoughts on this? Thanks again for sharing.

    Great idea!

The magnet looks a bit busy and unappealing, I would perhaps spend more on the magnet design and probably not squeeze as many numbers on it.

Only $100 per advertiser, this method could make double that easily.

This can also be scaled up if you have the time, targeting many different areas and businesses.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5963796].message }}
  • I like both the original idea and maderemark's concept of niche targeting the primary advertiser vs the second tier advertisers...

I would also brand the magnet *(i.e.- ValuPak), build a mini-site [squeeze page, business directory, online offer, etc], and setup an autoresponder [filled w/ local deals and CPA offers] to send daily/weekly.

This way, you're building a list & a marketable brand that can be monetized and leveraged to make recurring income from both the B2B client and the B2C consumer.

Excellent idea. Maybe the magnet might say, "Visit www.yourdomain.com for special offers from these businesses." Like you said, capture their e-mail address and or cell number for SMS marketing. Now you're offering even more powerful value to the advertisers.

      That is a great idea!

So, your not only making money from the magnet ad sales, but from online ad sales, affiliate sales, CPA offers, etc. and your able to build a mailing list to send other special offers, etc. to increase even more sales and leads.

Thanks again for sharing your ideas.

      All the best,

You can post links, you just can't post cloaked or uncloaked, affiliate links.

A few magnet printers I've come across are:

OverNightPrints.com Magnets4Less.com DiscountedPrinters.com to name a few. I hate websites that make you have to dig endlessly for the info you are looking for, only to make you have to call and go through that hoop jumping madness just to get a freaking quote! Then they will pluck your last nerve trying to 'close' you and move to the next suck...I mean, customer.

I would love to hear back from you with any questions or comments,
    Thanks!

      Hi Katie,

Thanks for sharing. Nice start to your e-mail. Now to consider the first rule of marketing. You need to address the "radio station" - WIFM or "What's In It For Me?"

Put yourself in the realtor's shoes and ask yourself, "Why would I want to hand out the magnets to my clients?" Well you and I Know the obvious answer - to get some free exposure. I'm amazed how often we need to "connect the dots" for our prospects.

      You might add:

"Your clients are going to love these magnets because they will list services that your clients will need when they move into their new house. They'll place them on their refrigerator where they'll be able to access those phone numbers EVERY DAY. Any you're contact info will be there to remind them who helped them buy their dream home."

"Won't it be nice to know that the next time someone mentions they need a realtor to buy or sell a home - your client will be able to walk over to their refrigerator and easily get your contact info to share with their friends? Again, this is at ZERO cost for you."

"So how can we do this at no cost? Well, we can't. We will offer advertising space to the other businesses on the magnet for a nominal charge so you don't have to pay anything. Everyone wins!"

You'll be a hero in their eyes for thinking of them."
Again, I can't stress the fact enough that if a realtor has recommended a trade's person, it might seem like an endorsement and if said trade's person screws up, the home owner can sue the realtor. Better have a disclaimer,

          Eva

I was a real estate agent for a while and my brokerage had a rule that we could not recommend just one trade person for that specific reason. If somebody asked us, we had to give them several names or none.

My ,company's rule of thumb was to give out 3 of each trade and not say ANYTHING like "This guy is really good" or something similar. We basically said "Here's 3 guys that you can call or you can look in the Yellow Pages".

It certainly is a tricky area,

              Eva

And to add to my post, this is not legal advice.

OK. No argument there. However, we now have a template for an opening e-mail that can be used for other industries. Now the plumber or electrician can be the featured business with other non-competing businesses being the paid advertisers.

I've been following this thread and it has really piqued my interest. There have been some great ideas and methods discussed here to make money doing something relatively simple.

As I drove away from home last week, I began to see businesses around me that I had never really noticed before. There are so many businesses around in the area that could serve the apartment dwellers and a lot of businesses can generate a lot more business or traffic if they stepped up their marketing efforts.

In the past I have researched the "rent-a-site" method but with this strategy selling ad space on a well-ranked site would work very well. I have an aged domain I can dust off and use that would be a perfect fit!

I'm currently working on a project that I'm trying to stay focused on until it's up and running on its own. Then, I would love to sit down and map out a plan to implement this strategy in my local area.

Most realtors don't have 500 homes at a time to sell! I don't know the actual statistic, but I'm sure most agents are working with less than 100 homes at a time... Could you clear this up for me?

    Martin
    Hey Martin,
What size is that business card magnet? My thinking is, that it is a wee bit bigger than an average sized card in order to fit those names on it. It would be great to get a magnet that could fit at least 10 area businesses on it; hence more profit for you and more exposure for them.

P.S-I just saw where BusinessCardMagnets has a sale going on!

    500 for $99.95 (shipping Included)!!!!

    I really liked this...

FREE photos and/or Clip Art provided if necessary (More information on confirmation page)
We supply proofs before printing within 24 to 36 hours of receiving your order
Each order includes at least 2 proofs (UNLESS YOU ORDER PEEL-N-STICK ITEMS)
Credit Card is NOT charged until the proof is sent to you and reviewed.

You can't beat that with a hockey stick!

Darn! It just hit me what I wanted to ask you Martin! How long do you tell the businesses they are paying for?Are you giving them 30 days, 60 days or charging them by the quarter like newspapers? Also, I just thought about this; that there could be several campaigns going on at the same time in different areas of the town or city. With that, you could easily profit $700 (or better) depending on the magnet size, fitting more (non compete) businesses on it, per campaign.

If you are going to work the magnet idea in different areas I suggest going with at least 60-90 days as you have to give some value and time for the advertisers to see results or they will not keep paying to advertise with you.

        To your success,

        Martin

Hi Mart! The problem I'm having is trying to figure a way to tie in the magnets with community feedback (forums/newsletters) That way, the advertisers can log on and see just what customers and prospective customers think and can create special offers and (customer appreciation) incentives to get them to come in...or keep them coming in! This is one way I want to show advertisers how they can evaluate their ROI and keep doing business with me!

I'm not techy at all so I am trying to find a place where I can find someone who can build or create a website, newsletter or forum that I can use to tie this all together.

It's great to hear you have come up with your own twist on my magnet idea and I think your on to something, so don't give up.

You can outsource some of the things you need done by using the places like the Warrior For Hire section on this forum and some things you can even get done on Fiverr.com.

I also see a lot of ads on Craigslist in my area by college kids who will build website really cheap, so you can check that out in your area and see if you can find someone to work with you.

I wish you much success and thanks for sharing your story.

              All the best,

              Martin

                      Yea - Hey Marty.....way to go! However....I'm having trouble with a couple of things with your idea;

                      1) WHY would a Real Estate Agent want to send out your Magnets to 500 Home Buyers?

                      2) So...maybe I mis-understood.....maybe it's not ONE Agent but a whole Real Estate Agency that will send out these Magnets. And, again; WHY would a Real Estate AGENCY want to send out your Magnets to 500 of their Home-Buyer Clients?

Yikes!....a RE Agent or an entire Agency with FIVE HUNDRED HOME BUYERS! That's a LOT of Home Buyers!...for ONE Agent or ONE Agency!

                      Could you clarify?

                      Thanks much,

I think the concept was to work with a real estate agent if you can, and give them a free ad on the magnet. This one agent would put the magnet on the fridge when they sell a house.

I know my agent sends me a magnet calendar each year, so I think he would love to get his face on fridges for free. My appliance repair man left a magnet on my fridge too, so I think if you find the right clients this would go really well..

      Melvin,

I was at my grandmothers house when the idea hit me when I was staring at her fridge and she had all these ad magnets on it , for pizza shops, auto shops, hair salon, etc. and I thought to myself why not do a co-op ad magnet and get the businesses already advertising with magnet who know the value of it to palce an ad on a local service magnet for a cheaper price than what they pay for a full magent and get 8-10 business to pay to be on it and that's what I did and made a nice little profit from it.

Thanks for your kind words and for your suport.

      All the best,

      Martin

    this is a brilliant idea!
it's interesting how people cannot take a few minutes to read the thread before asking questions that have already been answered.

I'm ready to get this started, but I have one question for martin.
How do you get your clients? I have a job so walk-ins might not really work for me now

      bwman,

Well one option is you can place an ad on craigslist in your area under the services section and provide details on your magnet, price and show a picture of an example of what your magnet will look like.

Then when businesses contact you make arragments to meet with them around your schedule or call them to talk details out and make deals happen.

      To your success,

      Martin

      bwman,

You have a couple options, such as hire a sales rep on a commission basis to sell ad space on your magnet or you can place some free ads on Craigalist in the small biz section in your area and advetise your magnet idea with some details and your contact info and hopefully you might get some calls and make a few sales, but if you can't hit the streets yourself, then I would say your best chioce is to hire a commission sales rep.

      All the best,

      Martin

Just did nearly this exact thing today! First time out sold 10 spots! Well, technically I sold 9 and bartered the last spot for karate lessons for my kid.

I simply cold called, took checks by phone, and closed nearly every deal in 5 minutes or less.

Thank you, gentlemen, for the idea! Oh, and did I mention $700 profit?

        Here's another twist...

This concept has been thrown around before but here it is:

Utilize the magnets in the same way that has been discussed in this thread but make slightly larger ones. You can get attractive, non invasive looking calendar magnets, and sell the ad spaces in the provided spaces. Most calendar magnets have a space for a large photo or some text.

Target businesses in the home improvement, service niche. Flooring, cleaning, handyman, windows, appliance repair, electric, heating etc...

Use info free and only send the magnets to "new homeowners." New homeowners are statistically WAY more likely to purchase various home services than people who have been in their homes for years. This is a killer selling point, your targeted demographic is VERY targeted.

Also, because there are new homeowners each month, you can send out another batch of magnets each month, and create repeat payments from these businesses. Explain to them that by participating in your advertising program, they will get in front of ALL the new homeowners EVERY month. Once you sell them in this idea you are set.

You can get 100 non crazy looking calendar magnets for $100. Figure in about one dollar to send them out to your list which you pulled from info free, and your cost is about $200. Order more/send more simply do the math. Sell spits for $100 or whatever you are comfortable with. Let's say you sell 20 spots, your profit is $1800. Get 5 separate calendars going each month and you are well over $100,000 per year.

Get up and do it....it's there for the taking.

Gosh, what made it easy for you?! I was gung ho around 2 hours ago. Now...not so much.

I've made 30 calls, no takers. Ofcourse I don't expect 1 out of 5, but did expect 1 of 20 or just a little more interest than I received, being that I'm starting the conversation with, "...I'm a Licensed Real Estate Agent in the area...".

I'm calling services who are already advertising, thinking they would be more likely to spend more on advertising. They're from the pennysaver and newspaper, however, so maybe that's the problem...because that advertising is cheaper??? I dunno...

BTW, how many calls did you make to get the 8 sign-ups? Would you care to share your script? You can PM if you'd like.

Well....off to more calling. I'm going to call 70 more today, no less! (I hear accountability is a must)

My magnets were hyper-local. That means, I targeted small towns in the burbs/shadow of a local city.

So I opened my cold calls with something like, "I just really think that people who live in Tuckyville should be buying their sevices from the good businesses like you in Tuckyville." At this point, they usually agree in a BIG way! I've showed them I'm on their side. I feel like that alone really opened the door for them to listen to the rest of my pitch!

Amy, I'll try that opening with my next set of calls....that does stroke the ego a bit.

I called on 102 businesses and sent out 10 emails fot those interested. No takers, nor responses to the emails. I am, however, proud that I set the goal and reached it--that's a first time for cold calling.

This week, I'll be offering 1,000 magnets at $97 instead. The cost of the magents will go from $75 for 500 to $130 for 1000 and the $97 will appeal to the psyche, hopefully.

      We'll see how that goes....

Way back in the dim, distant past, about 20 years ago I used to own a printing company and one of my customers did a very similar thing, printing about 25 - 30 ads around a central information block. He used to produce at least one of these a week for various towns and cities, and have 1000 A3 sheets printed at a time which he distributed through Estate Agents.

I had forgotten all about this until I read this thread, so thanks Martin for re-igniting my memory. His sheets, compared to your fridge magnet idea were large, unattractive and depended upon the homeowner actually bothering to pin or tape them up somewhere. Who wouldn't be happy to click an attractive magnet onto their fridge.

A great idea, just like all your others.

My two cents. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Everyone has great ideas but I am following Martin's. If he made money with the Real Estate guy than so be it. You can also do automobile insurance agents and put towing, transmission service, muffler, mechanics, mobile mechanics, anything having to do with an automobile as the other businesses on the magnet. Lots of things if you just think out of the box. But I am starting with the Real Estate agent. Just my two cents. Oh by the way. I made some business cards to see how many I could fit in that would be legible and with an 11 font it was 6. With a 10 font it was 7. Very legible. So there you have it.

      pablo4103,

Thanks for the kind words and support.

Now, at the same time there is always more than one way to work and promote an advertising project, so even though I was able to work this magnet idea with a real estate agent in my area, doesn't mean that it wouldn't work with a say an insurance agent or car dealer for someone else in their area, it's all about how you present it and how you present it as a value to the advertisers, etc.

Many people here on this thread have made some very good points and have shared some very good tips and ideas on how to make my magnet idea better or easier, etc., so I would like to thank everyone for all their help.

      All the best,

      Martin

Thanks. By the way, Martin, I can maybe send you an email and we can discuss what I could have done defferently:confused:.

I got so excited about this. And since I began lurking on this forum (about a year now), it's the VERY FIRST TIME I put my ALL into a money-making strategy/idea...because it seemed so possible and fairly easy. It seemed like a healthy step in the direction of my ultimate goals.

Like I said, "anyone else?....and how they did it". I'm not asking to criticize. I really do want to learn what I could have done differently.

Pretty cool idea, actually. I have some en route from Vista Print any day now. It's for my eBay store but I like this spin on it. If you're fortunate enough to have a very attractive logo that increases your chances of them actually putting it on the fridge.

Great to hear your friend is considering taking action with the fridge magnet idea.

Great idea for sure, after reading many of the OP's posts here, I respect his thought process. My only issue with this is how many individual realtors actually show 500 homes a year? For the seller it's a total win idea for a quick $700 but for the ad buyer not so much.

Now, if the realtor handed them out at every open house they were a part of or to each prospective buyer, then I could see the turn around being well worth it for those that buy the add. Plus that would increase the chance for repeat earnings.

Again, this is my opinion and I could be wrong.

      300SMG,

Your thought process is correct and sense I first shared this idea many others here have improved on the fridge magnet idea and have had success with it and one of the changes has been to get realtors to give the magnet out at open houses and or use them as a form of business card, etc.

      All the best,

      Martin

I've been selling cars for close to a year now and I just want to give my 2 cents.

    1) AWESOME idea Martin!!! The more you think outside of the box, I believe the more money you will make.

    2) Realtor's know A LOT of people, especially experience veterans and have built strong relationships over the years with their clients. They have become a lot of people's trustworthy realtor that takes care of them when they're buying or sell their house.

If you had a GREAT experience with a car salesman, got a good discount, and were sold the right car according to your needs... wouldn't you naturally want to go back to that same salesman next time you purchase???

I truly think almost everyone would. Most people are afraid of buying a car, but it's much easier when you're walking into the dealership to meet up with an old friend, rather than a new joe-somebody who's trying to make as much $$ from you as possible.

Since I figure that most of the realtor's clients trust their realtor, I imagine that putting "Recommended Companies" or something like that would sell very easily to them and maybe putting a few different "recommended car salesmen" for different brands would be a good investment for a car salesman to make and offer the realtor's client's peace of mind when purchasing a car. $100 listing for 500 magnets is cheap to potentially make 5x or 10x back from selling just ONE car.

Anyone have improvements to my thought process????

Sounds nice, however, the whole thing must be special to the USA I guess.

I am in Germany right now, and when a house is sold it is empty. A fridge will be there only after the new owners have moved in and brought their fridge. If there had been a real estate agent involved he would certainly not come to the house again to place a magnet on the fridge.

Besides that many houses here are sold without using a real estate agent since they have a very bad reputation, similar to a used car dealer.

I have just sold my house here and would never have thought of using a real estate agent for that.

So even I like your idea it does not seem feasible here.

    Re: "Discount Cards";

A few yrs ago I put together a "HOLIDAY BONUS CARD" discount card program where, instead of selling the Cards to consumers, I sold them to Business Owners and HR Mgrs (Human Resources)

The biz owners bought my Cards for $10 each ($8 for quantity) to GIVE to their employees as a "GOOD WILL GESTURE at CHRISTMAS "GIFT-GIVING" TIME!

The Biz Owners loved them....so did the employees AND...the Sponsors because they got MORE BUSINESS....and I LOVED THEM because I usually sold 1,000 before Christmas and put about $8,000 in my jeans.

I call the program "5 K by Xmas"!

I really enjoyed your Niche Biz ideas site, some very creative ideas. I have a question on your turn $5-$100 CL course.

You mention posting ads in multiple cities on CL which in reading the CL posting rules is prohibited. Is there a work around to this?

I just added this post to another thread, and then found this thread, so thought it appropriate to copy it here...

Thought I would shed some light on the "Magnet on the Fridge" aspect of this Wham-Bam dealee...

Having worked in Home Health Care for many years, and having been in thousands of homes with thousands of refrigerators...

        the answer is...

The majority of people that have refrigerators with magnetic doors, have magnets on their refrigerators... and they stay there for a long time.

Naked refrigerators are rare indeed... unless there is no way to stick anything to them, even then, people get creative.

I always used magnets as one of my consumer marketing items.

you can also get things distributed for free or very low cost by contacting local fundraising groups who are going door to door with their programs. They can offer the homeowner a "free" gift which will warm them up to buy some fundraising products. You might offer to pay a few bucks for them to distribute as well. Their time is worth way less than yours, especially when they are already knocking on doors.
