The Offline Video Grab Method

Wussup peeps?

Soooo...

I'm trying to work on taxes this weekend (blah!) which has led my mind to quickly wander off thinking about Offline biznass' stuff.

I thought about this moments ago and thought I would share with ya. It's untested as far as I know as I just thought about it, but I think it could be a pretty ninja and lucrative little (or big) money earner for ya.

So if you beat me to it, more power to ya!

Now this is what I would say might take a little GRIT. Not necessarily as someone else could do this for you. Either way I think it's worth a test in your area.

So locally, there are a LOT of tradeshows. Namely things called "small business expo" and local small business meetups etc...

I went to a Home and Garden expo a few weeks ago (before I had thought about this) as my wife had a booth set up. Her business probably made about an extra 10k that month as a result of the expo, so I know these badboys work!

But this is with a bit of a twist.

Here's the quick theory as pointedly as I can state it:

You set up a booth at a local business expo in your city, or an event you schedule or travel to.

Of course at the booth you can have flyers, swag, and all the basic stuff there.

But here is my idea. Why not set up a white background at your booth and get a large banner made where you will shoot a quick 30-90 second hd video free for all the businesses there and the businesses visiting the expo?

Now people can either come to you, from seeing the offer and your cool looking setup, AND you can go with a little camera to all of the customers booths and offer to shoot them a free video on the spot.

Why would they need a video? Well you can tell them how it will increase their branding with their customers, how you will upload it to youtube for them and they can add it to their website and their Places listings, thus increasing traffic and branding exposure for them.

For more of the benefits of Video for clients you can easily google it. And remember you can tell them that YouTube is one of the top search engines (was number 2 last time I checked), and something they are probably not harnessing the power of.

Now, you can have a little piece of paper where they can put in their name, number, website, and email address for you to contact them when the video is ready to be uploaded.

What you can do now is one, you are offering them a super valuable service that has a real value of a few hundred dollars.

If anything else, you email them the complete video and either upsell something or just make sure they know what else you can do and to contact you if they ever need anything else done.

Two, you can check out their website, seo, video presence etc... and look for gaps, missing opportunities, old sites that need revamped, keywords they aren't ranking for and need to target...

And when you email them the video, simply show them the "gap" in their marketing and make an offer to them that they can't refuse.

That's it in a nutshell. Thinking about this, there are a LOT of different things you could do here. But this one popped in my mind this morning and I think this could be pretty lucrative.

I'm sure going to be trying it out!

And, video is HUGE and not many people do it in my area unless they charge a few thousand bucks.

And nowadays all you need is a iPhone, Flip Cam, Kodak Zi8 or something like that to produce a high quality video on the fly for them.

What would be super cool is after you got their contact information, that you actually uploaded it on the spot and did some light seo on it.

You could potentially have the video ranked in Google before the end of the event or a few days later for one of their keywords!

Think of the power of walking over to them at their booth, or emailing them a few day later and showing them how the video is already ranked?!

Mucho powerful stuff indeed...

Nuff said for now, back to the Taxes.....................

    Very cool, Brandon.

This has so much potential to spin it in all kinds of directions, depending on what kind of offline services you offer.

Probably the greatest thing though would be getting them on your email list. And as long as you provide valuable content, you should frequently be able to tie in your services or some affiliate products as the logical solution to the problem(s) you discuss in your content.

Don't forget about capturing good audio if your subject is speaking on camera... and I'm afraid many of the little phone and flip cameras just won't cut it in that department.

Yea sound advice. The Flip cam doesn't always have the best audio but the iPhone and Kodak offer external mic and excellent sound and image.

Now, why did I not do that at the last expo I was 2 weeks ago. And I had the camera with me ... Thanks, Brandon, for reminding me to seize those moments!

Actually, I use the Kodak Zi8 "flip" style camera because it supports an external mic that can be clipped to your shirt. Unfortunately, Kodak came out with the "PlayTouch" (Zi10) and it no longer supports the external mic option. This has driven up the price of the Zi8 to the $300 range even on eBay.

I recommend the Flip Ultra HD (MUST be 3rd generation) as this supports the external mic. Can be had on Amazon for around $200 (NO aff. link)

I have just this minute purchase an "irig mic" from irig, its a condenser mic that plugs into your smart phone/itouch and you can record some great sounding audio with it.

          now roll on some expos...

Good thinking.... I read another post somewhere on here about a person walking around to businesses shooting video's and getting permission from the owners to upload for free.... great way to make a potential client into a friend first!!!

    Brandon,

Great post. Even going to a local plaza with stores seems an idea. When I had my hair cut last week I asked the owner if I could shoot a video and he was thrilled. (I didn't have my flipcam with me so need to go back). By the way, I have found that if I take the video from the flipcam viewer and then put it in windows movie maker, that you can adjust the volume in the wmm software and make the audio pretty good.

Would you offer more videos or what do you suggest as something that would then have a charge?

Hey Debbie right on! Those sound like some good ideas and congrats on taking action at the hair salon. Often it's those little things like that which can result in some big deals.

As far as what to offer later I would personally do it on a case by case basis or what my strong suit is as a skill.

What I would do is review their entire online presence once I get their deets, and find out the things that could have the "fastest" impact on their business and then go from there.

That way, they see quick results and would be more inclined to do more business with you with things that might be better long term but will take some time. Things like monthly seo, ranking videos and things of that sort.

Love 'thinking outside the box' and it's wonderful knowing great thinkers ( love the sculpture too...) who are happy to share their ideas and not 'hoard'. Moving onto Turkey later this month and plenty of ideas to be implemented there - once the Turkish is back up to semi-speed. Thanks.

All this inspired by doing your taxes

Thanks Brandon. I'm always looking for ways to up the game at trade shows as work with clients in the exhibition game. Now I can not only offer the individual exhibitors the extra added value of video but sell the idea to my clients and do a split on the revenue takings generated. making money, generating more business and keeping my existing clients happy.

Now I better get my taxes done so I can come up with a cool idea like yours

My business model is taking a small Kodak zi8 and showing small business owners (those who can't afford advertising) how they can use video to gain tons of local exposure....particularly via social media.

I think this idea is brilliant Brandon. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. Now, I'm gonna be the first to sign up for the next Chamber Expo.....heck, I'll be a superstar thanks to your idea.

Best of luck with the taxes...just finished myself

    Hi Brandon,
Great idea! I just uploaded a video for a meeting that I have tomorrow morning. It's already on the first page of Google after I checked it 17 minutes later. Hopefully this will do the trick and land this client.
Good luck with the taxes. I've been so busy lately that I keep forgetting that I have to do that too!.

Yep my Kodak zi8 has made me some money, very nice image when the lightning is right, but ouch does the sound suck. Even a plugged in mic has a lot of white noise I have to edit out - and the same mic sounds just fine on my laptop so I know it's the zi8. Is it just my model or you guys have got the same issue?

BTW video takes a lot of time to edit, upload, etc. I understand wanting to give something to get your foot in the door, but isn't that a little time consuming to be the freebie?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5969189].message }}

Not sure Jay, I have heard some that sound really good from the Kodak and similar cameras.

I think it's totally worth the effort personally and a bit more than just getting the foot in the door. Or at least worth testing.

Plus you also have to thing about the expo itself, not "just" shooting the videos. People are always looking at ways to get attention to their booth.

When you've got a basic video shoot and filming live videos of all the business owners there you going to stand out and get massive attention Big Time.

And if there are any other Web Design/Marketing businesses there you're likely going to dominate.

Videos 30-90 seconds in length only take a couple minutes to upload. You're at an expo, just state that and don't worry about any editing. You could even set up a specific YouTube channel titled "YourCityBusinessExpo" or something like that and just upload all the videos there.

That's actually pretty smart because now you control the videos and the account, and they or you can just embed from that account.

This would then be something you could even do a post about or something like that on Your own site, thus really branding you quite well locally. Because when other people go to your website looking for a designer, they will see you connected with tons of local established businesses.

      Mucho credibility...

Who knows but I think it's got some legs under it!

      Best,

      Brandon

Thanks Jay! Mind you I loooove working from my jammies and that's my preference.

I think you can make a killer living from your home and not have to leave it and I almost never do. But I do like to get out from time to time and connect, and also test and try new things from time to time to keep things fresh in my biznass.

I'll def post anything I try out with this and anyone who beats me to it I trust will do the same for the benefit of all.

      Thanks bro.

Generally businesses who pay to go to trade shows don't like for others to try to "sell" them. But this free offer would do real well. Nice to have many businesses "come to you" in one spot. You might even contact the trade show promoter and have them include you in a deal. Then you'd be a bit more "official" in approaching booths. I have seen trade shows offer this type of stuff for an upcharge to exhibitors. The videos could be shown around the trade show to generate booth traffic as well. Of course, you'd have plenty of hot leads to follow up on after the show.

That's a super awesome idea man. Thanks for adding that. I'll definitely contact the promoter about this first and I know a couple of the local promoters so it should be pretty gravy.

      Thanks again,
