A Simple Secret for Success

I know that for the veterans out there, this is going to be a very basic idea that you're already familiar with; however, I think that some of the new people might benefit from it.

It's exciting whenever you put together a deal. Whether it's for an individual client, or it's for a co-op advertising venture (like with Bob Ross' WSO or with Martin's magnet idea), it's always a rush when you close the deal and you get the client.

But there's one thing that you need to be doing with every single deal you close.

This is actually a fairly simple process, and you can help do it by remembering one thing.

Every single thing that you do needs to promote your business.

**If you put together a co-op advertising deal, make sure that your business name and contact information is on there. (Sponsored by ABC Biz Builders. For more information on how you can advertise with us, contact us at 555-555-5555).

**If selling spots for a postcard/magnet/guide/etc. - make sure you reserve one spot for your own business.

**If you create a website for a client, make sure that you have something in the footer or wherever. (Website designed by ABC Site Builders, 555-555-5555)

**Creating a directory site? Make sure that your business name is prominent on the site - and make sure that people know how to contact you in order to get a listing.

(Obviously, if you are creating something specifically for an individual client, you will want to make sure they understand that you will have something on their site - but if you look at most websites, it's a fairly standard practice so it should not be an issue with them. If necessary, offer some kind of an incentive for you to be able to put something on their site.)

Over time, your business name is going to be seen more and more by local business owners if you stick with this strategy.

It will come to the point where when you contact business owners, your name will be familiar to them.

Not only that, but if biz owners keep seeing your name in different places, they'll know you make things happen, and they'll want to do business with you.

In sales, it usually takes anywhere from 5 to 11 exposures before a sale is made. By having your name in front of biz owners over and over, you are simply priming the pump for future sales.

  • You need to be building your own empire while you are helping others build theirs.

You must be a fan of Zig Ziglar who said something like:

Help enough people get what they want and you'll get what you want (paraphrased).

I first heard him say that at a NSA meeting in (I think) 1983. That was the only thing I remembered from that meeting :-).

It really doesn't matter how you say it though cause it still works. I guess it could be called a universal principle or an evergreen principle.

Thanks for sharing. Always good to read sage advice.

  • Shay,

That's why I build in some sort of residual income into every deal.
Plus, every website I sell or rent has links to my service.

  • Great advice Shay..you're totally right..sometimes we get so focused on providing great value and results to our clients we forget to focus on our business too (I know I've been guilty of this!).

Awesome read and reminder to keep in mind!

  • Shay,

Great post! I know how much you love Zig ... and I love me some Zig, too!!!

I've been a fan of Zig Ziglar for over 30 years. I had the great pleasure of meeting him in person and chatted with him a few minutes about 10 years ago at a church luncheon and I must say that he is as warm and awesome as can be!

In giving people what they want, I don't see any reason why we should not do things that will help to build our own businesses. Adding our website URL to products we produce or services we provide will go a long way towards generating traffic, getting new clients and building a brand.
