"Reality Check: Do You Have What It Takes To Build A Successful Offline Business?..."

Hey Offliners,

Don't be like some offliners I consult with that lie to themselves about what it really takes to build a successful offline business.

I have hundreds of buyers of my wso's that send me emails with questions, hurdles and their offline business plans to review. So, I get a chance to see what challenges that many offliners are facing.

Over the past few months as I've sat down to answer questions and help out in any way that I can, I started to notice a undercurrent of similarities.

It reveals itself in a number of ways through questions like...

"How many cold calls should I make per day?"

"I live in a small town with only 5,000 people, will I be able to support a business with that many people?"

"Does direct mail still work?"

"Can I make $50,000 from my offline business without actually speaking to a business owner?"

Now, while those questions may actually be legitimate questions from serious offliners, they all have something in common that point towards a startling reality:

Many offliners are trying to do everything to avoid the hard work that goes into starting and growing their offline business.

I know that's a strong statement, but I have hundreds of buyers who I communicate with regularly, so I have the proof to back it up.

So, let's look at my answers to the questions above:

"How many cold calls should I make per day?"

Honestly, you should make as many calls per day as it takes to reach your goals. If you want to earn $1,000 per week and you're selling $250 websites, then you need to call business owners until you get one sale per day four days a week.

You should plan on calling every waking minute that you can reasonably expect to reach business owners who can buy from you until you reach your goal.

"I live in a small town with only 5,000 people, will I be able to support a offline business with that few people?"

Maybe...maybe not, but there's only one way to find out. Market to every business owner in your area and see if they have a small town mindset with their business or if they're willing to invest in their business like the big boys.

However, there's nothing to stop you from calling business owners in every town or city within 100 or 1000 miles of your hometown.

There are dozens of real-life businesses and even offliners who run completely virtual offline businesses over the phone and internet.

Yes, it takes more skill, a great online presence and more creativity but it's being done day in and day out.

"Does direct mail still work?"

Yes, direct mail still works. The right type of postcards, letters etc. mailed to the right type of prospect will always work.

However, what you're probably trying to say is that direct mail cost money to test and find the winning formula, which probably scares you.

It's not reasonable to expect to not spend any money to grow a successful business. You have to be willing to work even harder to get the cash you need to invest in your business.

"Can I make $50,000 from my offline business without actually speaking to a business owner?"

No. Even if you run a completely online offline business like Aweber, you will need to answer questions from business owners before and after they buy.

See, as I answer these types of questions day in and day out, I can't help but notice that many offliners are trying to do everything to avoid the real work of running and operating a offline business.

If you're serious about growing your offline business, then (just like me and others) you will have to work your butt off for months and most likely several years to get to a great offline business generating great income.

Hope this helps,

Chris

See that's the thing though Chris... so many people are in LOVE with the idea of running their offline business and blinded by dollar signs in their eyes they believe there is an easy way to do it but there really isn't.

Most people don't have what it takes, they either find excuses why they can't do certain things or they are just completely clueless how things in the real world work.

Some people would rather spend 16 hours a day sending emails to businesses than testing direct mail or cold calling. If it works for them, then great, but it isn't realistic to expect that is going to be enough and have longevity.

About the town of 5,000 part.. I live in the St. Louis metro area... I didn't even start locally, I get a ton of business through california and other states, only recently did I start locally and I live in an area with MUCH more than 5,000 people. You guys could do the same, you just have to want it.

    Great post and thread.

I'm 59 years old have owned my own business for over 35 years. I can tell you this post tells the truth. Unless you are willing to invest time in basic business building skills, nothing works. I'm beginning a new adventure in off-line marketing and expecting to work as hard as I ever have. What a wonderful opportunity to have the info available on this forum to become successful. Some people can accomplish much with little effort. I'm not one of those and don't expect to be. Like the old Southern saying goes, "if the mountain was smooth, You couldn't climb it".

An ENTIRE INDUSTRY is built around what you just said!

It's called the "Business Opportunity" marketplace.

      Not going away anytime soon.

It's just migrated from biz opp magazines over to the Internet over the past 10-15 years.

I have to agree with the others it takes hard work with a strategy to be successful. However, many a WSO make it sound easy to rake big busks with little work. That only works if you are creating one of those WSO's........LOL

You do have to spend money to make money and in the beginning reinvest as much as you can. Direct mail can bring lots of customers or it can empty your wallet quickly. Making calls after you send a direct mail piece may be the difference between making nothing or being profitable.

Anyway, it is a great way to make a living if you are willing to put the effort needed to be successful.

    Good post Chris.

It's not even about the offline business that people need to figure out if they are meant to be a full time business owner. Any business will require some real work. There is no way around it.

One of the biggest problems with this forum is that it is rampant with those that do not want to work for their money. They want to be able to work an hour a week and be able to pull in a couple of hundred dollars a week while they are playing video games. Many are just after a quick buck and that is all. Not where a real business is going to be found.

There are so many ways around all of the obstacles of having your own business, that if you are making excuses as to why you are not making money, then you are just making excuses. Just like Iam said, you don't have to have your clients where you live, so living in a town of 5000 people is just another excuse.

    Wonderful post Chris.

Many people are dazzled by the lure of easy money in the off-line world. I think that's why there are so many WSO's having to with that aspect of Internet Marketing.

But the key word is that you have to work it. You have to do something. You need to take action.

BTW Chris, totally off topic...but as you can see I'm a pizza man, and New Haven is the pizza capital of the world...Who's your favorite: Pepe's, Sally's or Modern?
    Me? Don't get me started!

    Well said Chris!

We can all find excuses of why we can't do this or that, but all of these excuses are just obstacles that we can choose to overcome if we really want to.

Sure... overcoming obstacles can be hard, tedious, time consuming, and just generally not fun.

But the rewards are more than worth it.

5,000 people in your town? Cold call, direct mail, etc businesses in larger towns.

Can't afford direct mail? Keep reinvesting in your business until you can.

Identify any and all obstacles and then get over them, through them, or around them by any reasonable means necessary.

That's what I am doing, that's what every successful person there ever was did, and that's what you need to do to be successful too.
