Referral link on bottom of your clients' sites you created

Just a question:

Who puts their referral link at the bottom of their clients' sites?

I go back and forth in my mind about liking the idea or not..even though I have done it also.

I mean, I have taken down remodeling signs (for windows) in my front yard of the company putting windows in my house because I was irritated with how long they took to do it.

I can't say that I would not take down the link if I was the client who had a website created for me.

Has anyone had clients ask them to take off their referral link? You have to admit, it is free advertising and free (in part - one link)) seo also.

What do you think?

    I do on every single site, not anchor text link just a simple, designed by _____ followed by my phone number, they're great for referral traffic.

    Never had anybody ask to take one down before.

    I'm actually doing a free website for a celebrity at the moment, just to have my link at the bottom.

      I put a link on all my sites - but I do make sure it opens in a new tab/window; some designers don't do that, so the viewer is taken away from the initial site which, in my view, is poor practice.

    I request them to put it sponsor or powered by our company with referral link and place it below the footer so it appear on everypage and we get full of link back .
    As long you provide them something is free, then they will give you a refferal link with free as return.

      A few of my sites disappeared from Google yesterday. On the Google support forum a lot of people were saying that any links back to your own site should be "nofollow". If it's not, the site may get penalized.
      I don't know if that was the reason, but a lot of people had their sites disappear yesterday.
