Hey guys,

Im in the prosess for starting a local website design and hosting business. Im learning how to use wordpress and will launch my business very soon - super excited! My main goal is to generate passive income through annual hosting fees.

I was hoping some of you who are doing the same thing could share how you find your clients?

Any other tips?

Thanks!

Selling hosting is going to be hard in my opinion. Especially enough to make a nice residual income. Your better off sellin SEO or other services on a monthly basis.

    PhilaPM-

Why would you say that without stating fact or reason? It is very discouraging to read dream-killer comments like that. It's one thing to prove otherwise, but you haven't elaborated on anything.

Throwing up a website in an hour or less for $35/month residual seems like a pretty good deal to me - even if you are providing regular maintenance, backup, security and general hand-holding/consulting (i.e. real value). Most people work for half of that amount, or less, per hour...on non-residual terms.

If you enjoy web development, do it. People need it and will appreciate it. I'm sure there are plenty of folks earning a decent living from cost-effective web development w/hosting.

Check out John Durhams bower method, he is giving away for free in his signature I think.

It is this exact business model.

I don't know if this is going to work or not but it runs along the lines of what the op said. As an experiment we are targeting some low end businesses that do not have a website. The presentation is simple.

It says you know you need a website, right? They say yes but we can't afford it. We say can you afford $25 a month to put your business in front of more people? They say yes. We book appointment and start collecting checks.

So far, three appointments. Now why wouldn't we be after the high end client you might be asking. We are and have several clients in that group. We want some low end clients to use as development models.

Whatsa development model? A low end site that becomes a high end client because the site brought in the revenue as projected. Are we sure this will happen? Yes, given the market. But, this is Reno NV and it probably differs from your market so our strategy may not work for you.

After all, with all of this IM stuff, YMMV...

Both of these guys obviously don't understand your business model.

Don't listen to these people. If you get into web design, hosting can be a good source of residual income. When you sign up your web design clients for hosting you usually NEVER hear from them again, UNLESS the site goes down (use a good hosting company to avoid this). Most clients would prefer to pay a premium to have there site hosted with a 'local' company (even though the ACTUAL host is probably not local).

I agrea that just starting a HOSTING company can be hard, just because of all the competition. But starting a web design company and offering hosting to your clients is a no brainer.

Good luck with your business Stean.

    Stean,

Why go through all the trouble that you are for PASSIVE INCOME, via your hosting company. Which I believe is too much work for what it's worth!

You can do that EFFORTLESSLY (and seamlessly) without all the trouble in the way that you are currently doing it by:

Offering this type of service, as well as other services, to business folks that need hosting by being an affiliate for an already and well-known web host. Hint: Hostgator!

Honestly, if you want to make PASSIVE INCOME, you need to find OTHERS to do the work, but, yet, you still get paid.

Therefore, if you are still set on getting your own hosting company up and running (via membership or not), YOU WILL be the one that has the answering to do, especially when problems arise, questions need to be answered. Now, that certainly doesn't sound like PASSIVE INCOME to me, even if YOU'RE PASSIONATE about it!

Just adding my 2 bits worth here!

    Sincerely,

    JMB
