How does your SEO client portfolio look?

I was wondering the other day about SEO and how people's client portfolio for this service looks? is there a common patterm?

What I mean is this:

The way I see it, there are 2 types of SEO client:

1.) Ones you sign up for a package or a set term, e.g. 3 or 6 months
2.) Ones you sign up on a rolling monthly basis, hoping they say with you forever

I have always been inclined to lean towards the second option, by charging a lower fee that is within a normal monthly maintenance price-range to encourage people to stay long-term. But I know people also charge high for a set period of 3-6 months as a 'package;.

How do your SEO client portfolio's look? Do you have both types of clients, and if so what proportion do they make up roughly?

Bascially, I am just wondering whether to go for type 1 client, or type 2 clietns, or both or whatever...

Thanks,
Steve.

It is definiately "Easier" to go for the month to month option. People tend to be scared on contracts. But in saying that, whilst a little more difficult, getting 6 month high paying contracts is incredibly valuable!

Here is what I notice, others might disagree:
1: Tradies are easier to get on month-month basis
2: Professionals (lawyers, dentists etc) will be fine with going with 6 month contracts.

    Just what I have noticed

I agree. Also, you can do what most apartment leasing companies do. Charge more for month to month and show them a cheaper price for choosing a contract.

    Step One: Outrank them.
Step Two: Sell them a monthly fee for rental.
Step Three: Repeat steps one and two.

This way you'll always own the sites, and you decide what to do when **** happens - ie, someone skip a payment.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

I don't have any contracts that are not month to month. I use this as a big selling point...

If we are 4 or 5 months into an engagement (or however long) and the client wants to separate, I don't want to a) force them to work with me or b) force them to pay me money for work I have not done yet.

This is the case for all our clients - both small local and larger national SEO clients. Same goes for PPC and other IM services.

This is good, certain feelings tend to get in the way if they start to "FEEL" stuck. Good points.

I usually get them on to a package to first get them ranked, and then transition to a lower monthly 'maintenance' service. So basically using both approaches the OP pointed out!

Seems to be working so far :-)

Mine are all month to month also. I tell them I have to earn their business every month or they can walk.
