Google Places - What is it and how hard is it to set up?

I've heard a lot about Google places and I know the basics of what it is, but what does it do for businesses? How does it benefit them? How long does it take to set up? What kind of information do I need to set it up?

I'm thinking about offering a Google Places listing as a bonus in a package of mine. Currently, I'm setting up SEO packages to pitch to businesses whenever I get a meeting. I know what Google Places is, I just don't know how I would explain Google Places if a business asked me questions about it.

So when you answer this question, respond like you're talking to a business owner that knows nothing about online marketing. I have a hard enough time trying to explain SEO to computer illiterate people. lol

Google Places is a great addon service for any offline marketing business. There are some great Google Places training out there. The one that I use is Google Places Blueprint, that training has helped me confidently charge upfront before I even rank their business.

Learning Google Places optimization isn't hard it's just tedious. The trick is to make sure that the title tags on the client's website matches the keywords you're trying to hit.

Then make sure to claim their Google Plus business page as well.

Make sure to take lot's of pictures and name them the keywords you're trying to rank for. I take all the photos with Instagram because it Geotags the photos them and Instagram marketing is huge right now so it kills two birds with one stone.

After I take the pics I upload them to Flickr and Picassa and make sure to geotag them as well with their geotag options.

Then I create a video and upload it. I make sure the video is the same title as the keyword I'm trying to hit. For Example: Long Beach Thai Restaurant Dragon Cafe.

Then make sure to create an annotation on the Youtube video with the businesses address.

There are a few other steps but just doing these steps is usually good enough. But to answer your question definitely get on Google Places.

I'd suggest searching the offline forum.. you will see countless threads that offer more information than you will find anywhere else, including WSOs.
