Critique my email copy-where can I improve?

Hi everyone,

I sent the following cold-email out the other day to a prospect I was aware of who had had a website created for her recently. I'm starting out in this game and feel the niche/service of offering optimized versions of small-medium business owners websites is an easy way to get in the door, leading to offering other "online" services.

Anyway, I followed up with a phone call to guage her interest and was quickly told she wasn't interested. What emotional buttons/triggers/buzzwords did I not use to get her to say "hell, yeah, when can you build it!"

Here's the original email, be honest and fair with your critique, maybe my expectations to convert one from one was a bit out and perhaps there is nothing wrong with my copy, but I'm reaching out to those in the know and asking for some guidance/mentoring in the art of cold-email copy.

Here it is:

Hi Sarah,

I came accross your website recently while visiting some friends near Army Bay. I actually was using my mobile phone to view your website and had some difficulty navigating it (you know, pinching and pulling at the screen, zooming in and out just to enlarge and read the text to find contact details etc).

Don't worry though, there's nothing wrong with your website, it works perfectly if you are viewing it from your laptop or PC. But these days more and more people are looking for information while on the go and if they don't get the info they want then and there when they want it (while on their mobile phone etc), they will click away and head over to your competitors who do have an optimised version of their website that is served up to them when viewed from their mobile web browser like a smartphone, mobile phone or tablet.

Solution

We actually create optimised versions of local websites; that's the business we're in (husband and wife team) and we went ahead and created a demo mobile optimised version of your current website.

If you understand the value in providing ALL your current clients and prospects a great browsing experience and not giving them a reason to leave your website for your competitors, contact me to arrange the real thing.

It's too long. I would keep unsolicited emails as short as possible. Think about it - not everyone has time to read your message - especially if 1) they didn't ask for it and 2) you're trying to sell them something.

If you can keep it to five simple sentences or less, you'd be golden.

Here's how the flow of the email can go:

Sentence 1 introduces the problem. Sentence 2 tells them why it's important to solve this problem. Sentence 3 lets them know the solution to the problem. Sentence 4 lets them know you can help. Sentence 5 invites them to contact you for more information.

    POW!

    P. S. - Your contact information should be included in your signature - not in the body of your email.

What's her business? Not everyone needs a mobile website. I think they're great for restaurants but I'm not sure I see the value so much for other businesses.

Very lengthy email, I would cut it down because there's no way I'd read all of that.

I'd reduce it to about 25% of what you had originally written.

Cold emailing sucks when you're in the US. Tons of other people try the same exact thing and it just doesn't work effectively no matter what your copy looks like. Cold calling slaughters cold emailing any day of the week. Think emailing is better on sundays than calling? No.. it really isn't.

Anyway... believe it or not, I still cold email late late at night since I'm an insomniac and work a holic. My emails, I have closed sales with, but it is usually very short and to the point. They're either interested and want me to call or they aren't. Maybe every 300-500 I may get a response. Of course it depends on what you're offering.

    Hi Sarah,

I came accross your website recently while visiting some friends near Army Bay. I actually was using my smart phone and realized you don't have a mobile version of your website. I specialize in mobile web development and it really isn't as expensive as people think. If you're interested, I'd love to speak with you about this. When would be a good time to call?

    Thanks,
    John Smith.

Doesn't need to be longer than that.

Irrespective of how long your e-mail is and whether or not she has a business that requires a mobile site, if her site has just been recently set up who do you think she would call? (Assuming she even read it)

Thanks, this is along the lines what everyone is suggesting. I'm a detail-freak and thought the education of the client would be neccessary-hence the novel.

I'll reply with some feedback on response rates. Well done on the smoke-free.

        Thanks.

Keep in mind... your job is to find people who need your service. You don't have the time to educate everybody out there on why you have a service they need, and why you are the person for the job. Generate INTEREST! That's the main goal! Once they're interested then tell them why you're right for the job, and close them.

Well...IMO..a cold e-mail is just that and I also agree it's too long. I would build an in person relationship with the business owner first.
If you are dead set on cold emailing, I would just send a short email and invite them to a free mobile marketing webinar.
