Domain name availability

I'm trying to get a new website for my company however I have come across something that I would like to check out with people who may know if this is important on here...

I'm currently based in the UK and the domain I want is available in the .co.uk format however I was thinking that if I had the .com format it may be more credible if you know what I mean. This one is available as well however they are trying to charge upwards of a couple hundred dollars to get it, so my question is: does the domain name ending have any impact on credibility or am I over analysing things?

I think you are over analyzing. I tend to do the same. I'm putting together a coupon site and I spent days trying to decide on adding savings/deals/coupons to the name. Finally I just had to pick one. No one has said anything about it, they don't care. They only care what they can get out of it.

Both .co.uk and .com are good choices if you want to appear legitimate and professional. It all depends on your target market and where you want to rank, IMO.
Thanks! The target market is in the UK so it probably does not matter as much, always an aim for future expansion for a redirect link and then maybe a/b test it. However as most the work will be carried out offline and the website is just a reference point then this has help to confirm my first thoughts.

Thought that this was the best place to post it as the domain name in question is relating to an offline business.

@ beeswarn, he's asking a totally legitimate question about his offline biz. Why is this the wrong forum for this topic?

@RoryF you're in the UK, your target audience is in the UK, pick the .co.uk -- not sure what it's like now in the UK, have not been back there for a while but it does seem that .co.uk names are a very attractive option in and outside the UK.

Like others said, don't over-think things, you'll do just great.

        Best of luck,

I'm in the UK, and we use the .co.uk in preference for various sites where the businesses are selling within the UK. We try to get the .com as well (and point that to the .co.uk) but it hasn't seemed to matter when we've not been able to. Split testing has shown (so far) that the .co.uk site names win out for UK searches.

Bear in mind the a .co.uk will rank better within the UK by Google because it's considered more local and therefore more relevant.

If you add the .com to Google Webmaster Tools you can tell Google to consider it a UK based site too - but it still seems easier to just use the uk extension.
