What you don't want to sound like

I got a phone call this morning while I was doing some work and it went like this...

Her - "Hello?"
Me - "Yes, may I help you?"
Her - "May I speak to the owner please?"
Me - "Yep, that's me... How may I help you?"
Her - "I'm calling today to offer to put your business on the top page of Google and"
Me - "Sorry to interrupt, you're with Google?"
Her - "No sir, but we will get you on the front page of Google"
Me - "Great, for what term? Can it be for my services?"
Her - "Sure, what are your services?" (She called Internet Marketing Niagara Falls)
Me - "I put businesses on the top page of Google" (I never, ever say that to prospects.)
Me - "Hello?, Hello?"
She hung up.

They don't even look at company names or care what we do. It's a numbers game and they're calling people in your community and will overcharge them for services that don't produce results. You owe it to your community to protect business owners from these firms.

I've talked to many clients who get 3 to 5 calls like that each week. I receive 1 a week on average.

Don't be like that, do your research first, offer real value and personalize your calls.

Absolutely. On the bright side, someone is paying people to make those calls, and people are buying it....Just take action, and there are millions to be made helping people. Great Post!

Yea, I wouldn't go with her. I'm sure there are 3 or 4 people around here that'll get you on Google's top page.

(Oh wait, I recall going to Google once.. As I recall only Google was there)

That is the most hilarious post I've read on this forum.....

Haha, They must have been stupid to call an IM company to sell IM services.

I really need to learn how to sell IM services properly, right now I'm too nervous and I suck at it. Gonna talk with my buddies who own their own businesses since they know the client-side of things.

Know why she hung up quickly without saying goodbye?

Because she's a pro at her marketing too, and she knew where you were going. You are a "type" to her.

Probably not from intimidation. lol More just because you seemed like a waste of her time.

First hint that its not leading to a sale = "Click".

She did that to 200 other people today. Probably made the next dial without even flinching or hanging up the phone.

People mess with me on the phone, and the afterthought of them lasts about a millisecond. In fact they think about it alot longer than I do...lol

She wasnt calling to sell you, she was calling to find out if you were a prospect - you got disqualified and dispositioned as an NI within a millisecond.

There is a 90% chance that she made more sales today than you did, selling the same service you sell.

If more Warriors dialed like her there would be more sales reported.

John, I disagree. How hard is it to look at a business name on her prospecting call list and see what type of business it is. It was "ABC Carpet Cleaning", then she would already know what type of business it is. She would already know what services they offer.

By her asking "Sure, what are your services?" just tells me she is making this same call to hundred other people. It already puts a bad taste in your mouth that this person is calling and has no idea what you offer.

It would have been better if she would at least know a little bit about the prospect, what services they offer, etc. It's not difficult to get that from their business name. Personalization and knowing your prospect before you talk to them is key.

Furthermore, she should already know that this person wasn't a prospect since they are in the same industry. It's like trying to sell carpet cleaning services to a carpet cleaning company. You're not going to get anywhere.

    @ Drooblez,

She was moving fast and read the name and it went by her... if he had any interest, it wouldn't have bothered him, he was looking for something from the start.

More than likely she was on an autodialer, which he didnt understand, and his name didnt even show up on the screen till after he had already said hello.

Those are the kind of conditions she makes sales out of every day. Shes like a "Green Bere".

Certainly not perfect circumstances. Every greeting is quick on the draw, no time to prepare, some go by you, half the time you dont even get to see the customers info till the conversation has started, and when you DO get to see it first you have a millisecond to read it before you are in the ring.

In fact alot of the time every other call is a completely different pitch and program...you adapt fast.

I know this because Im a finely tuned phone machine myself... being a good talker is for those who want to barely make quota, and who dont mind trading their family's income for pats on the back, and being well liked by strangers. They bring stories home of interesting conversations and magic beans.

Good telemarketers get it in or out, forget about it, move along, and bring home commission

Fact is I still bet she made more SEO sales than he did that day in his own industry, and probably doesnt know the first thing about SEO. I stand by that.

She HAS to just to keep her job.

She knows...customers dont pick out stuff like that if they are halfway interested, so do I after making 100,000 calls... He's a type and she saw it coming.

Now, sure she could have been cleaner,
but at the end of the day she compensated for that by moving fast and dis positioning calls and get unqualifieds off the phone without even saying BYE... She was doing what a strong pro telemarketer does.

She was doing what gets 3-5 sales per day.

If this guy can tell me he does that then I will think he has a right to knock her, but Im betting he doesnt.

Not being mean but most un refined telemarketers make more sales in a day than most guys who would take the time to write this make in a MONTH... seriously.

If you can be objective and look at it from that perspective you could appreciate her disposition and say "maybe I could learn something from her".

Fact is, she ran into a waste of time, recognized it quickly, and got it the heck off her phone.

I would applaud her for that then say "Btw, try to remember the name next time. I know you are moving fast but, its a good thing to notice...".

She probably whispered 'something' under her breath and never thought about it for another second ...this girls mind was on her quota.

Frankly he didnt have to mess with her if he had better things to do like she did...personally I'd just say "Not interested, but I appreciate how hard you are working.Good luck", and would have sown a seed for someone to give ME grace down the road when I needed it.

She was fine, frankly if I was her I would have done the same thing, or may have quickly said "sorry about the extra call" and hung up.

You can feel like a refined talker and take all the time to deal with difficult people that you want.

    As for me?

If I was her this would be my attitude (In love):

Im not dialing so prospects can give me a pat on the back...Im going to be the champ at the end of the month, I just want to get a sale, so I can move on and get another one
    .

No time to stop for people who want to mess with me over a stupid mistake, let them waste THEIR day, and go back to the warrior forum trying to figure out how to be like me.

As for what my boss thinks?

he has a list of 500 thousand numbers for me to dial, and could care less if I forgot someones name. as long as Im not misrepresenting the company its an honest mistake that will happen 20 times per day. If I get sales Im his hero.

Reality check. Be more like them! Unless of course you even match 10% of the sales they do every month.

If not you should be on the learning end, not the critical one.

On another note, I wish this thread title were more powerful, this is an excellent teaching opportunity.

On yet another note, even if he was cool about it, I would quickly chuckle and say "sorry about the extra call. click".

I would hurry off the phone in the "latter" case, before this nice guy tried to start comparing companies and talking shop with me...No time to talk about the weather, we should both be making sales.

If offline Warriors did it like telemarketers they would all be rich.

Bang on the money John. When making a high volume of sales calls in day it is crucial to know when to give up, when to chase, when to put the phone down, when to bother with the call back (never in imho lol) and so forth. This is a SKILL. And not only a skill but one of the most important arrows you can have in your bow as a cold calling telesales.

I've seen so many people concentrate on studying their sectors, the industry's they are calling and so on before they even start making calls. And i'll be honest, you know where this tends to get them? FIRED, through lack of sales. Not only this when you are sat with zero sales and you are 'studying a sector or the info in front of you', your boss will be looking at you thinking you are a complete waste of space and will probably want to wrap that phone around your head!

Obviously there is a bare basic due diligence that a telesales should partake in before a call and that in my opinion should be just know the sector you are calling and probably the area too - especially if you are selling Google PPC as this woman was seemingly doing.

Regards and please check out my thread here too

I want to take up an offering for you, because you arent saying what people like to hear...you are preaching the TRUTH!

As stated, she was probably on an auto dialer and didnt even get to see his name before the conversation started. Alot of calls happen like that.

Ps. Already checked it out last night! Good stuff.

I guess we are assuming this person had a list of 100,000 other people to call, which may or may not be the case. With all the scraping programs out there, it's not hard to scrape a list that includes the business name and phone number of prospects.
